Dear Families,
What an amazing day Friday was! Dominion Energy sent over ten volunteers to refurbish our outdoor classroom, brightly painted in green and yellow, adding a podium, teaching table and even canopies to provide our students with shade. They trimmed the trees and weeded and mulched our garden beds, making our outdoor classroom with possibility. Purchasing some outdoor seating for our new tent as well, we stand ready to accommodate students in the great outdoors for the final four weeks of school. We are so fortunate to have such amazing community partners – check out the before and after photos below!
And while Dominion Energy was busy building us a “fort” at school, our students accessing virtual instruction were busy building forts at home, in celebration of the SCA pajama and fort day Friday. Check out a few of the photos that were posted on the CWES PTA Facebook page.
Warm regards,
Diane Leipzig, Dr. L
CWES will be hosting a summer intervention program for eligible students in rising K through rising seventh grades. This half-day program will run from 9:40 AM to 1:40 PM from July 12 through July 30.
Here is some basic information posted on FCPS (https://www.fcps.edu/academics/summer-learning) about the program:
Each elementary school has summer learning opportunities designed to support students as they develop
- executive functioning skills,
- mathematics skills, and
- language arts skills.
The learning provides an opportunity for students who have been identified due to their academic performance; determined by various criteria. The total number of students that can attend will be impacted by the number of teachers at the school available to work this summer.
Invitations for CWES students in greatest need for this program will be sent to families via eNotify by this Friday, May 21. Please RVSP promptly if you receive an invitation. If any families decline these invitations, we will strive to fill remaining spots with students with less intensive (but still documented) needs. The second wave of invitations will be sent by Friday, May 28.
There is not an application process for this limited CWES summer intervention program. If you are looking for summer programming open to all, here are some camp offerings widely available to students that may be of interest to you, if you are looking for summer programming:
All students will be provided summer practice books.
Summer Practice Books will be mailed home to FCPS students to provide suggested activities for students to support continued learning. Families who have opted-out of paper mailings from the division will only receive digital copies of the Summer Practice Books. Books will be mailed home to families in early June to arrive before the last day of school, June 11, 2021.
Digital versions of books will be emailed to the enrolling parent SIS account in PDF format the week of June 7, 2021. Pre-Kindergarten students will receive one interdisciplinary Summer Practice Book.
Students enrolled in grades K-8 in 2020-21 will receive one Language Arts Practice Book and one Math Practice Book by course enrollment. These books will also include information and guidance about digital tools that can be accessed by students and families to support learning throughout the summer. English Learners and Special Education students may receive additional or customized books. More information can be accessed on the Summer Practice Books public webpage.
