New this Week

1. Library News and Information

We have been so thankful for the ability to connect with and provide library materials to our virtual students this year through curbside pick-up.  Many in-person students have also participated in this weekly opportunity.  Our last curbside pick-up event will be Monday, May 17th from 12:00-3:00 and 4:00-6:00.  We hope to see a lot of Bears next Monday!

Stop by the OC Story Walk this week to read Jabari Jumps, by Gaia Cornwall. This beautifully illustrated picture book tells the story of one small boy overcoming his fears.

Students brought home overdue notices for library books on Friday, May 14th.  The list includes any overdue library materials from the 2019-20 school year.  Families will not be financially responsible for the books from the 2019-20 school year, but we are very thankful for each of these books that can be found and returned.  In-person students can return library books to the blue tubs marked, “Library Book Return,” located just outside their classrooms.  Virtual students can return their library books at our curbside pick-up on May 17th, or, any school day, 8:00-4:30, in the OC front lobby in the tub marked, “Return Library Books Here.”

The last day for students to check out library books is Friday, May 21st.  All student library materials are due back to the OC library on Friday, May 28th

Social Justice Book Clubs

The conversation of our final social justice book clubs will center on Refugee Stories.  The K-3 club has filled, but there is still room for students in grades 4-6 to join.  The 4-6 book is, When Stars are Scattered, by Victoria Jamison and Omar Mohamed.  This National Book Award finalist graphic novel tells the remarkable story of growing up in a refugee camp, as told by a former Somali refugee to the Newbery Honor-winning author of Roller Girl.  It is also a Battle of the Books title for our June 8th battle.  The 4-6 book club is on Monday, May 24th at 11:00am.  A copy of the book will be provided to all students participating in the book club.  Use this link to register your child.

The Woodson Pyramid Virtual Art Show featured many Olde Creek Artists! Please check out the YouTube video link to support and encourage a few of our talented artists.

We can’t wait to share the Olde Creek Art Show with you all at the end of the month to showcase something from ALL of our amazing artists!

3. 6th Grade - Save the Dates

We are excited to be able to host the following events to celebrate our sixth graders:

Sixth Grade Promotion

This year, our Sixth Grade Promotion ceremony will be held at Olde Creek Elementary School on Wednesday, June 9th at 9:45am. Our rain date is Thursday, June 10. We are thrilled that we are able to hold this in-person event at our school with social distancing guidelines in place. We will also have a virtual option for student and guest participation.

Sixth Grade Celebration

The planning committee for our 6th Grade Celebration is hard at work. We are excited that we will be able to offer in-person and virtual opportunities to celebrate our Bears. On Thursday, June 10, there will be an outdoor celebration at Olde Creek. On Friday, June 11, there will be a virtual celebration as well. More information about both events will be coming soon.

4. Bear Cub Cooking Club-May 27

Are you a Bear who loves to cook?  Have you already participated in the Bear Cub Cooking Club?  Did you miss the Bear Cub Cooking Club and still want to be a part of the fun?  The Wellness Committee and Ms. Pecha will be hosting one last Bear Cub Cooking Club for this school year on Thursday, May 27th at 5:00 pm.  By popular demand, Ms. Pecha, our resident celebrity chef, will be leading us in making one of everyone’s favorites: PIZZA!

Laptop

5. Laptop Return Information

At the end of the school year, Olde Creek will be collecting the laptops and power cords that were given to your child to use at home and school this school year. Students who are returning to Olde Creek in the fall will be issued another laptop at that time. Students going to middle school will be issued a laptop by that school later.

  • Students who are enrolled in the SOAR, Bridge to 1, and Young Scholars summer school programs at OCES may keep their FCPS laptops for those programs. They will be collected on the last day of the program.

In-Person Students

  • Students will turn in their laptops on Friday, June 11th.
  • A staff member will come to the classroom to check the laptops back in. If you have lost the power cord and need to replace it, please send a check for $23 made out to Olde Creek Elementary. You may also send the exact amount in cash. We will not be able to make change for you.

    • Tuesday, June 15th from 11:00AM-1:00PM
    • Tuesday, June 15th from 2:00-4:00PM
  • Drive through the OC Bus Loop. Remain in your car, a staff member will come to your car to get the laptop.
  • Please have all equipment ready. Leave the name tags on the laptop.
  • We will check the barcode to make sure that the laptop matches the one that was checked out to your child.
  • If you have lost the power cord and need to replace it, please bring a check for $23 made out to Olde Creek Elementary. You may also bring the exact amount in cash. We will not be able to make change for you.

Thank you for returning your child’s laptop on time so that we are able to start getting them ready for the next school year.

summer

6. Summer Programs

As we have previously shared, FCPS will offer multiple programs this summer. The summer programs are for invited students in rising kindergarten through our current 6th graders. The summer learning opportunities are designed to support students as they develop executive functioning skills, mathematics skills, and language arts skills.

The following summer programs will be held at Olde Creek for three weeks from July 12-July 30: Summer Olympians Aspire & Reach (S.O.A.R), Young Scholars, Bridge to K, and Bridge to 1st. There is limited seating in each of these programs and students have been identified due to their academic performance; determined by various criteria. School staff have contacted families of students who are invited to participate.

As shared last week, all students will receive a summer workbook to work on skills over the summer regardless of participation in these programs.

There are also a variety of summer enrichment programs open to all students. Information on how to register for these programs is available on the FCPS Summer Learning webpage.

More information is expected to be coming soon regarding details about Camp Fairfax offerings for summer 2021.

7. Update on Walking Paths

Frost MS continues to prepare for construction and renovation. This week, construction fences were installed to create a safe distance between students and the construction zone. While Olde Creek ES remains accessible, some walking paths will be obstructed with detours in place.  Families/students from the Chestnut Hills and Starlit Ponds neighborhoods will be most impacted. The Office of Safety and Security will post directional signs to alert students to a detour around the original paths that will allow access to Olde Creek (and Frost and Woodson). During this phase of the construction (through summer 2022), walkers from this area should plan on leaving earlier in the morning so they may arrive to class on time.
