May is Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month – a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States.
A rather broad term, Asian/Pacific encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia (New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and the Solomon Islands), Micronesia (Marianas, Guam, Wake Island, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru and the Federated States of Micronesia) and Polynesia (New Zealand, Hawaiian Islands, Rotuma, Midway Islands, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, French Polynesia and Easter Island).
The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.

Rec-PAC is a six-week, structured recreation program operated by the Fairfax County Park Authority for elementary school children. Participants enjoy activities such as fitness, indoor and outdoor games, team sports, nature, crafts, special events, talent shows and play sessions. Weekly activities incorporate character-building activities. A ratio of at least one staff person to 18 participants is our standard. Our enthusiastic leaders include college students and school teachers who bring a variety of skills.
Safety is our number one priority, and Rec-PAC follows guidelines established by the Fairfax County Health Department, the Virginia Department of Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. All activities will follow recommended, pandemic-related health safety protocols such as social distancing, mask wearing and frequent hand washing. Participants will stay with the same group of children and staff throughout the day, and staff will clean surfaces frequently.
The number Rec-PAC locations and the number of children at each site is limited this year due to COVID-related precautions. You must register in advance. No walk-in registrations are allowed at Rec-PAC sites.

The TJ PTSA Diversity Committee is pleased to announce it will be hosting a virtual event on 15 May 2021, an online virtual conference featuring several area STEM education providers, including those that offer free and reduced fee services for low-income households. The purpose of this event is to inform the community of those services available for aspiring TJ candidates currently in Elementary and Middle School.
Thank you for registering for our May event. The goal of this event is to advertise educational enrichment providers that offer enrichment opportunities. Moreover, many providers within our community offer free or payment plan options for low-income households, which helps debunk the myth that STEM enrichment in Fairfax county for gifted children is available only to those from wealthy households.
The audience of this event are parents of students of all income levels, teachers, and counselors that are interested in STEM and are motivated to provide opportunities to prepare their children for academically rigorous STEM programs.
Each speaker will have 30 minutes to go into detail about their programs, discuss the successes their students have achieved, recommendations for parents, and an additional 10 minutes for questions and answers, and other pertinent discussions.
