Waples Mill Updates 5/13/2021

Good Afternoon Waples Mill Families,

Here are this week's updates:

Waples Mill ES Kindergarten Orientation Information and Sign Up

Do you have a child entering kindergarten next school year at Waples Mill?  If so, please note that there will be a virtual kindergarten orientation for parents/guardians on Tuesday, May 25th from 6:00-6:45 p.m.  The orientation will be held virtually using a Blackboard Collaborate link, which you must sign up to receive.  Please register to attend and receive the link to the orientation here.  If you have any questions about registering for kindergarten, please contact our Carla Collins at chcollins@fcps.edu.

Kindergarten Registration Information for the 2021-2022 School Year:

Virginia State law requires that children who will be five years old on or before September 30, 2021 are eligible to be enrolled in kindergarten.  Students whose fifth birthday falls after September 30, 2021 are not eligible to enroll.  If you have a child eligible for kindergarten to begin this August, please view the information at the following link to begin the registration process:

If you have further questions, please contact our registrar, Carla Collins, chcollins@fcps.edu, 703-390-7700.

End-of-Year Library Book Pickup/Return Information

The last curbside pickup for WMES library books is this Monday, May 17th from 9AM-4PM.  The returns bucket will continue to be outside the school’s front door every Monday until the end of school.  Office staff will also take returns Tuesday-Friday from 9AM-4PM.

The last day for in-person students to request books is Friday, May 21.  Books can be returned to the classroom. When bringing books to school, please keep library books and water bottles in separate areas in backpacks.

All WMES library books should be returned by Friday, May 28th. The library will email overdue notices on Tuesday, June 1.  Instructions for paying for lost books will be sent closer to June.

If you have any questions, please contact Lee Bruner, librarian at lsbruner@fcps.edu

End-of-Year Medication Pickup Information

don't forget

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time (2:15 p.m.) on the last day of school.  Medication left in the health room after that time will be discarded.  It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian.  Medication cannot be sent home with your student.

If your child will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, your existing long-term medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program.  Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s).

Your cooperation will ensure that we can safely give your student his or her medication.  If you have any questions, please contact Cheryl Phillips, our school health room aide, at (703) 390-7700.  Thank you!

2021-2022 Optional Class Placement Survey

As we determine class placements for the upcoming school year, please know that it is a collaborative process involving the teachers and specialists who work with your child. This team effort is performed with great care. It is our intention to place each student in an environment appropriate to his or her academic, social, and emotional development. If you would like to share any additional information about your child that their current teacher may not be aware of, please go to our school website (https://waplesmilles.fcps.edu/), then click on the 2021-22 Optional Class Placement Survey. We carefully consider parent input, but ask that you not request specific teachers. Requests for specific teachers cannot be honored.

Completion of this form is optional. Please return the completed form by clicking the submit button no later than Friday, May 21. We cannot consider late requests.  Thank you.

All Students to Be Virtual on June 8 Due to Democratic Primary Election

Tuesday, June 8, is the Democratic Primary Election. Because the Fairfax County Electoral Board and City of Fairfax Electoral Board will be using 165 school facilities as polling locations, June 8 will be a virtual synchronous  learning day (no in-person classes) for all students.

Student Intentions for the Next School Year (2021-2022):

If your child/children (Kindergarten through Grade 6) will be attending another school in Fairfax County or outside of Fairfax County Public Schools (public or private) for the next school year (2021-2022), please fill out the Student Intentions form, which can be accessed at the following link:

https://waplesmilles.fcps.edu/announcements/students-intentions-2021-2022-school-year

Please email the completed form to Carla Collins, Registrar, chcollins@fcps.edu.  Parents of students who are transferring to another school need to start the registration process with the new school as soon as possible.  A transcript will be sent to the new school upon receipt of a records request to Carla Collins.

Please note:  If your child will be joining us at Waples Mill again next year, there is no need to fill out the form. Your child’s record will automatically roll back into our Student Information System and no new registration paperwork is required for the new school year.

Reminder about Picking Students Up Early from School

If you need to pick your child up from school early, we ask that you do so prior to 3:45 p.m.  This will ensure that our parking lot is clear for buses and that our office staff can support our regularly scheduled dismissal process.  Thank you for your cooperation!
