Cardinal’s Message

Dear Cunningham Park Families and Friends,

Although Teacher Appreciation Week came to a close last Friday, please allow us to give one more huge shoutout to our brilliant teachers and staff!  They have tackled everything that has been thrown their way like rock stars and made sure each and every one of our Cardinals has been cared for and loved.  We cannot stress enough how very thankful we are to be surrounded by such innovative, ingenious, loving professionals.

And from cookies to student messages, to notes on doors, to ‘Sunshine in a Bag,’ to lunch, to a supply bar - thank you so much to our fantastic PTA for showering our teachers with gifts of appreciation throughout the entire week! Your thoughtfulness made the entire staff feel loved and appreciated.

This week, we begin SOL testing for 3rd-6th grades, starting with Reading.  For in-person Cardinals, tests will start at 9:30am, while our virtual friends will begin their tests at 12:30pm on their designated days.  A complete schedule of days and times can be found below.  Please have your children get a good night’s sleep the night before so they are well rested.

Sincerely,

Katie Le, Principal and Jon Kemmerer, Assistant Principal

Positivity Project Focus Last Week: Leadership

by Dr. Keri Mina, CPES Technology Coach

People with this trait value each member of the group and inspire people to do their best. They also have the ability to understand others and inspire them toward a common goal.  A group’s effectiveness and sense of inspiration is tied directly to the leader. Study after study shows that leaders have the biggest influence on group success and morale. Leaders can be developed and it starts with character.

Our digital citizenship connection to leadership is: We are critical thinkers and creators.  As we develop or increase our leadership skills, we need to make sure that we are not believing everything we see and developing critical thinking skills is one way to do this. We also need to make sure that the people who lead us are leading us in the right direction.  With the plethora of information at our fingertips, we need to make sure we are discerning between true and false information.  We can never let down our guard, being careful to never share false information.

Try this at home:  Go to this website:  https://zapatopi.net/treeoctopus/  It is a fake website.  Talk with your child about how they can’t believe everything they see on the internet.  Talk about how to tell if something is true, can you verify it in more than one source?  When you google it, do you see the words “hoax” or “fake” anywhere in the search?  Talk about how to verify if something you read is true.

Quote of the week: “A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus.” -MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

Thanks to the generosity of the CPES PTA, every CPES student now has a Cardinal red t-shirt that commemorates this unprecedented year of persistence, of laughter, of love, and of #ConnectedLearning!

Every Wednesday until the end of the school year, we invite all students and staff to wear your red shirts! After all, throughout the craziness of learning through a pandemic, whether virtual or in-person, we are all Cardinals!
