Message From the Principal

I hope this message finds you well. This week we will keep it short and to the point. I a to thank all of my Senior parents who allowed their children to come out to prom last night. The students looked great and even though it was a different type of prom. The music was great and put on by our very own Physics teacher Dr. Hassan Moore. It was a great time and based on my interactions with the students, they had a great time too!

SOL's begin tomorrow. You can find the schedule of assessments for the week here.  The only other thing I have to say about that is to please make sure your children get plenty of sleep.  If they don't have time to eat at home, please remind them that they can pick up breakfast at school.

Please be aware that even though it looks like the governor may be relaxing some COVID protocols in the near future, we will still close out the year with our current protocols out of an abundance of caution. But it is nice to know that it looks like light at the end of this tunnel; and what a long tunnel it has been. But as with most things, we have made it through, together. No tears here, but I might sniffle a little when it is all said and done. In the meantime, let's remain diligent and keep up our momentum as we get closer to winning this fight against COVID-19.

Speaking of winning, how about our amazing womens' teams.  Both soccer and softball are undefeated and looking fabulous. But I can't leave out our strong lacrosse team who although they didn't come away with the win on Friday, they played with inspiring heart against the number 1 team in the region. And let's not forget about our strong tradition on the track. These ladies are once again eyeing a run at a region championship!  Then add on the fact that once again South County achieves an FCPS first with our partnership with Under Armour and it's Women of Will program.  Check it out here

Okay, time to close out now. Have a conversation with your child about end of year grading, and remember that summer school for credit recovery is free this year so if that is a need, please take advantage of that opportunity.

Have a wonderful rest of your weekend and please continue to be safe. #OneStallion

Credit Recovery

Credit Recovery is an opportunity for students to recover two high-school course credits. Students may take one course per session. Students should contact their school’s summer program administrator for additional information. Students are eligible to enroll in a credit recovery course if they receive a grade of NM at the end of the school year. Credit Recovery is only for students who failed a course. New Course options are detailed on page 2. This is free of cost and transportation is provided to students that need it. Since the sessions are only three weeks long, it is essential that students are available for the entirety of the session. Information for all summer learning opportunities can be found here: https://www.fcps.edu/academics/summer-learning

Testing Corner

Advanced Placement Testers and Families

  • It is important that all testers download the Digital App, login in, and practice using the Digital Testing App in advance of the AP tests in the coming weeks. Parents – please check with you students to make sure that they have downloaded and are using the AP Digital Testing App.
  • All AP testers – make sure that you have a viable email address attached to your College Board account in order to make sure you receive valuable information from College Board and Mr. Bird, the AP Test Coordinator.
  • In lieu of traditional “excused absences” forms that have been used in the past, students registered to take an AP exam will be marked as TST (excused for testing) in SIS on the days a student has a scheduled AP exam, whether it is at home digitally or in-person at school.

The following AP Digital At Home exams will take place this week:

Tuesday, May 18 – AP English Literature and AP Computer Science

Wednesday, May 19 – AP US History and AP Macroeconomics

Thursday, May 20 – AP US Government, AP World History, and AP Psychology

Students are required to have downloaded the AP Digital App and logged in in advance. For each digital AP Exam you take, you must complete the exam setup step in the digital testing app. This step loads your exam onto the computer you’re going to test with. Completing this step is required 1-3 days before each exam. Without taking this step for each exam, you will not be able to test.

For testers taking an in-person test – you will receive your room assignments via email one week before your scheduled test date.  If you have any further questions, please email Mr. Bird at cwbird@fcps.edu

SOL End-Of-Course Exams

Because of the unique environment we are currently in, SOL End-Of-Course exams will be focused on three days in May. On May 18 and May 19, all students will have asynchronous “catch-up days” at home – there will be no in-person or synchronous instruction on May 18 and 19.  Please see the schedule below:

  • All SOL testers and their families should have received an email this week with their SOL testing dates and times and room assignments.
    • Students need to make sure they bring their fully-charged FCPS laptop and charger with them for their SOL tests.
    • Students should plan to arrive at school by 8:05 AM in order to be in their testing rooms by 8:15 AM
    • Students being dropped off should arrive through the Kiss and Ride at entrance 12.
    • SOL exams are untimed tests. Students usually take approximately 2-3 hours to complete their tests, but it all depends on the testing speed of the student.
    • Students who requested bus transportation have received their pick-up times. Busses will make return trips leaving SCHS at 10:30 AM and 1 PM.

For additional questions regarding the SOL End-Of-Course tests, please contact your school counselor or Chris Bird, School Test Coordinator, at cwbird@fcps.edu

A few important dates and reminders for all Senior Families. The finance office will not accept checks from Seniors after May 1st. All Senior dues, class fees, outstanding obligations and any prior year textbooks need to be resolved NLT May 14th or this may impact students from receiving their cap and gowns. Debt notices were mailed home before Spring Break to students who have outstanding obligations in Textbook Tracker. If you received a notice, please mail a check along with the debt notice to the school. Checks can be made payable to: SCHS and mailed to South County High School, ATTN: Finance Office, 8501 Silverbrook Road, Lorton VA 22079.

There may be other fees due, such as unpaid senior dues, transcript fees, library fines, lost laptops or chargers, or fees for specific classes. These fees should be paid using My School Bucks (MSB). Class fees will have an invoice in MSB, the other items can be found in the School Store in MSB.

For planning purposes, we will begin Senior collection of laptops and current year textbooks on June 1 – June 4 (time TBD). If these items are not returned on time they will convert to a debt and will also impact them from receiving their cap and gown during Graduation rehearsal on June 7th.

Pre-sale Online Ticketing for Spring Sports

This spring will be our very first season of using a brand new interface for purchasing tickets for South County sporting events (Softball, Baseball, Lacrosse, Soccer and Track), ETix. ETix will allow our fans to purchase tickets online, prior to any game, match, or meet hosted at South County High School. To purchase tickets in advance, use this link to select the event for which you want tickets, then use your credit card information to purchase the number of tickets you want. You will receive a confirmation email for your purchase, and you will pull up that email on your phone to present to the ticket booth, scanning your ticket. This same procedure will also be used for those who wish to make credit card purchases for tickets at the gate on the day of the event.

If you have any questions about these procedures, please contact Terri Smith at tasmith1@fcps.edu.

If you have any questions about any of this, please feel free to email me any time!
