Principal’s Message

As we enter the month of May our attention shifts to the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments and the anticipation of summer. The Standards of Learning assessments will be administered online to students in grades 3-5 between the dates of May 3rd and May 28th.

For many students, taking the SOL assessments can cause some stress because they want to do well. Research studies show that in stressful testing situations, the ability to recall information can be suppressed because the brain is responding to the “stress signals” which makes it difficult to remember information. Of course, we want our students to do well on the state assessments with the results accurately reflecting students understanding of the curriculum. However, we do not want our students to feel stressed due to taking an assessment.

In effort support students during the assessment window, please make sure your child gets the following:

  • Good rest each night 9-11 hours each night is recommended for children ages 6-11,
  • A healthy breakfast at home or school😊
  • Remind them that they have worked hard, studied well and that you are proud of them.
  • Talk to them about calming strategies such as taking some deep breaths and having positive “inner” self-talk, such as ‘I can do this’ or ‘I’m a great thinker and problem solver.’

Taking these few steps will help children do their best!

ATES LIBRARY BOOK checkout information and instructions

GOOD NEWS: Those who have their TAL special in the building will be able to look for and check out books in the library during their TAL “screen break.”

Otherwise, use the library catalog to place a hold on books you want.  Log in to the catalog properly and place a hold only on books that are listed as “IN.”  Here is a video that shows you how to do this.  Students: be sure your parents know you have placed holds, so they can make sure they are picked up and returned according to the schedule below.

Just before the next pickup date, you and a parent should receive an email indicating which of the books that you put on hold were checked out and available to be picked up.  If you want to check this for yourself, log in to the library catalog then select “checkouts” from the main menu pull-down list (select the 3 bars icon at the top left of the catalog screen.)

Books can be returned and new ones picked up at the main entrance of the school at the following day and time:

Wednesday, May 12 from 8 am-12:30 pm (NOTE: students who are “in person” but do not have TAL on the days they are in the building are asked to pick up their books outside the cafeteria after lunch on this day.) Be sure to place your holds by Monday, May 10 (by noon): there is no limit, so get plenty of books!

This will take place every 2 weeks.  Upcoming dates and times will be announced.

For younger students, parents are encouraged to place the holds: again, there is a tutorial video to show you how.

And there is much more you will want to explore—including many sources for ebooks, audiobooks and online read alouds--in the Library’s Reading Resources Google SiteA link to this can always be found near the top of the Library page of the ATES website and clicking the “Reading Resources” button.

SURVEY OF PRESCHOOL CHILDREN

Virginia law, Section 22.1-254, requires that children who will reach their fifth birthday on or before September 30, 2021, must be enrolled in Kindergarten for the 2021-2022 school year unless the parent or guardian notifies the school in writing that they do not wish the child to attend school until the following year. In preparation of 2021-2022 Kindergarten enrollment, please complete the  Survey of Preschool Children prior to March 31, 2021. The IT-112, Survey of Preschool Children is also available on the FCPS internet, which includes 7 translated versions following the English version. Please contact the school office if you would like to have a hard copy.

If you know anyone who has a child who will be 5 by September 3, 2021, please pass this information along to them.

Cloth Masks/Face Coverings

Masks are a simple barrier to help prevent your respiratory droplets from reaching others. Studies show that masks reduce the spray of droplets when worn over the nose and mouth.  CDC continues to study the effectiveness of different types of masks and updates the recommendations as new scientific evidence becomes available. When visiting an FCPS school or building, please wear a mask or face coving.

The following cloth masks/face coverings are acceptable and supported by FCPS:

  • Gaiters with 2 or more layers
  • Cloth masks/face coverings with 2 or more layers

Health Commitment Form

All Parent/Guardians are being asked to acknowledge and complete this one-time commitment to health screening so we may be prepared as students are phased back into in-person learning. FCPS will be communicating directly with Parent/Guardians prior to the child's anticipated start date.

The Health Commitment form can be also submitted electronically through ParentVUE (PVUE) . Please contact the school office if you would like to have a hard copy.
