NEW News

1. Message from Dr. Floyd

Good Friday afternoon Woodson Families!

What a beautiful day!  I hope everyone has been able to go outside and enjoy this weather.  I’m excited that tomorrow should be the same for PROM!   Our seniors are getting excited to have one of the few normal events of the year.   The weather is great and we haven’t seen any cicadas on campus yet! I’m hopeful for a fun evening and if your senior hasn’t signed up, there are still times available so please use the Sign-Up-Genius to have your students sign up for a time slot.

Please remember, if your son/daughter is coming to SOLs next week, they MUST bring their FCPS issued computer (and power cord) with them!  We do not have computers to give out for the SOLS!

Tuesday and Wednesday this week will be asynchronous and teachers will have assignments in their Google Classroom or Blackboard sites. Please take this time to review any missing items that need to be completed before the end of the quarter.

With the announcements by the CDC this week, I am hopeful for a return to normal summer and fall activities. FCPS has not changed their guidance around mask wearing and social distancing. Masks continue to be REQUIRED on all school grounds at all activities. I appreciate the community adhering to this requirement.

Have a wonderful and safe weekend!

Dr. Floyd

Working - Drama Spring Show

2. Woodson Theatre Presents - Working

Based on the book by Studs Terkel, Working is a celebration of the average, every day worker in America. From housewife to hooker, teacher to trucker, millworker to mason, and everything in between, everyone has a story to tell.

The stories in this production are uniquely set on location in the Northern Virginia area and have been expertly edited to bring you an innovative new theatrical viewing experience! (Mature language and themes – not suitable for children)

Watch the trailer to see a preview of the show!

The Connection Newspaper published a review of the show on Page 8 of their May 6-12, 2021 edition.

The streaming show runs from Friday, May 14th through Sunday, May 16th. Here's the link to tickets: : https://www.showtix4u.com/event-details/51731

3. SOL Test Next Week

Testing will begin each day at 8:20AM. Students will be dismissed when they finish the test. Students MUST bring their FCPS issued computer (and power cord).

  • Monday, May 17th – Biology, Chemistry, Geosystems
  • Tuesday, May 18th – Reading, Algebra 2
  • Wednesday, May 19th – Algebra 1, Geometry

Teachers will inform students of test locations.

Please note: Students who will be taking an SOL or digital AP exams this spring must run the FCPS Health Check (found on the desktop) on their FCPS issued laptops on the FCPS network to ensure they have the latest updated software. Students will need to access the FCPS network on school grounds. Students can do this after hours or on the weekends from outside any FCPS building.

4. Upcoming Asynchronous or Virtual Learning Days

Tuesday and Wednesday, May 18th and 19th will be VIRTUAL ASYNCHRONOUS learning days due to SOL testing and AP testing of more than 1,000 students each day. (Only students taking SOLs need to report in-person for testing. All other students will have asynchronous assignments to complete virtually.)

Wednesday, June 2nd (rain date June 3) will be a VIRTUAL ASYNCHRONOUS learning day for students in grades 9-11 due to the Woodson Class of 2021 Graduation. (No students in-person; asynchronous assignments.)

Friday, June 4th will be a VIRTUAL SYNCHRONOUS learning day as Woodson will be hosting another FCPS schools' graduation. Dismissal at 11:35am (No students in-person; synchronous teacher-led instruction.)

Thank you for your understanding in this situation as we support another FCPS school.

5. SENIOR CLASS NEWS

Senior Prom

Senior Prom will take place on Saturday, May 15th (May 22nd is our rain date) from 6pm-10pm.

The theme will be “Starry Night” and we will be hosting the prom on campus in the front of the school. Please use the Sign-Up-Genius to have your students sign up for a time slot.

We are limited to 250 people at any one time so students will sign-up for time slots to attend. Students will be required to wear a mask at all times and maintain social distancing.

GUESTS: If you are bringing a non-Woodson student guest, please email the Guest Form (found on the Class of 2021 Google Classroom) to Dr. George Hewan at gkhewan@fcps.edu.

Cap and Gown Distribution

Students will pick up their graduation items (cap, tassel, gown, and tickets) during the week of May 17th at school.  In-person students can stop by the main office during the school day to pick up their items.

Virtual students can come on Monday, May 17th from 8:30am-3pm or Wednesday, May 19th in the evening from 4-7pm at Door 1.  Virtual students please do NOT come during the school day to pick up your items as it will cause a strain on our front office operations.

Senior t-shirts will also be available for pickup on Monday, May 17th from 8:30am-3pm at Door 1.

If you have any questions about pick up please contact Mandy Burke, graduation coordinator at ajburke@fcps.edu.

Graduation Tickets

Along with students receiving their cap and gown, we will be handing every student an envelope that will contain 7 paper graduation tickets. Two of 7 tickets will have a stamp on the back. These stamped tickets are for Plan C - in the event that graduation is rained out.  (Plan C details will be shared prior to graduation.)

We do ask that you please keep track of your tickets. Tickets are NOT replaceable.

Starting on Monday, May 17th there will be a drop off box in the Main Office for families that do not need all 7 tickets. If you are able to drop off unused tickets, please be sure that you do NOT drop off the two tickets that have stamps on the back. Those 2 specific tickets are for Plan C Graduation! And again, we do not have replacements.

Depending on the number of unused tickets we receive back from families, will determine how many we will be able to give to those families that submitted the Google Form requesting additional tickets. If we are able to provide any, we will send notifications directly to the families the week before graduation.

Cords and Stoles

Seniors, please contact your honor society or club sponsor for information on how to get these items from them directly.

Laptop/Textbook Returns

We will have a cart outside of Door 1 labeled Textbook Return, so students or parents can drop off textbooks that aren’t needed any longer and that need to be returned and checked in.

Laptop Return is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, May 27th and 28th. Laptops must be returned in order to receive student diplomas. If you have lost or broken your laptop, please reach out to Dr. Hewan at gkhewan@fcps.edu or your school counselor ASAP so we may clear this up before graduation. We understand things happen and we want to help resolve any issues now.

Senior Dues

Your Class of 2021 Senior Dues of $50 must be paid prior to picking up Cap and Gown. If you have missing dues, you should have received a notification this past Monday. Senior Dues can be paid via MySchoolBucks, Cash or Check. For more information on how to pay, please visit the Class of 2021 Woodson Webpage at https://woodsonhs.fcps.edu/student-life-activities/class/seniors.

Select works will also make an appearance on our Instagram @woodsonhs_art.

7. Grading Information - New Deadlines

Earlier this school year, FCPS adopted a series of secondary grading policy changes to help our students finish the school year strongly. One of the key changes for high school students is to allow students to request a mark of “P” (pass) instead of a letter grade (A through D) in select courses.

As communicated by FCPS earlier this week, the deadline to make this request has been extended to allow students and families more time to gain information about fourth quarter progress before making a final decision. Seniors now have until Monday, May 17th and underclass students now have until Tuesday, June 1st to designate a final mark for up to two of their current courses as Pass instead of a final letter grade "A" through "D". To submit a request, please use this form.

Please note that grade changes will be automatically applied after the year end grading process has closed, so there may be a delay between the end of the year and when the grade is actually changed to a P. Additional information can be found on the FCPS Secondary Grading and Reporting site.

8. Summer Credit Recovery

If your child fails a core course and earns a no-mark (NM) this year, there are summer opportunities to recover these credits.

Woodson will host IN PERSON credit recovery opportunities for its students during two sessions.

Session 1: June 28, 2021 – July 16, 2021 (no class on July 5)

Session 2: July 21, 2021 – August 6, 2021

Hours: 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Credit Recovery Information

Summer School Credit Recovery Registration Link

There is no virtual credit recovery option. Virtual courses are only available through FCPS Online Campus.

If you have questions regarding your child's grade, please contact the teacher.  If you have questions regarding the Credit Recovery program, please contact your child's school counselor.

It is time to select student representatives for the upcoming school year.

Students interested in applying for this opportunity can complete a Student Interest Form using their FCPSSchools.net accounts.

This Is My Brave is committed to bringing stories of teen mental illness and addiction out of the shadows and into the spotlight to raise awareness and offer hope. Teens need to know that it is okay to not be okay. Let our Brave teens inspire you with their incredible stories!

15. Sports Physical Night

SAVE THE DATE! Wednesday, June 16th

We are excited to announce that we will hold our annual Sports Physical Night in June!

The W.T. Woodson Athletic Training Program’s Sports Physical Night event will be held on Wednesday, June 16th at Woodson High School.

As always, the goal of Sports Physical Night is to provide a complete pre-participation examination screening that will leave student athletes with a VHSL physical valid for the entirety of the 2021-22 School Year.

Each year it is required that all student athletes have a completed VHSL physical on file before participating in sports. Price will be $50 like in previous years.

Hosting this event is our Athletic Training Program’s only fundraiser for the year and ALL proceeds go towards helping the program purchase supplies. Without your support we would not be able to provide the services we do for our student-athletes. Appointment times will be available at 5:30, 6:00, 6:30, 7:00, and 7:30pm. Registration information will be coming soon!

Want to Volunteer??

If you would like to volunteer please feel free to reach out to Chris Hogge, ATC at chogge@fcps.edu. As of now, we are still looking for a few more physicians and HCPs to complete the actual physical exams (MD, DO, NP, PA) as well other HCP’s comfortable with taking vital signs. If you are willing and able to donate your time, it is greatly appreciated. If not, and you know of some others that would be able to assist us, please feel free to spread the word!

If you have any questions or would like more information, please feel free to reach out to Chris Hogge, ATC at chogge@fcps.edu .

16. NEW VHSL Physical Form for SY2021-22

This is the NEW VHSL approved Physical FormThis is the only version that can be accepted for the 2021-2022 school year. If you have a doctor fill out the old version (version that says in top right corner "revised February 2017), you will have to have your doctor complete the new one, which may require another appointment. So, please make sure the form you fill out says "revised January 2021" on the top right.

The VHSL Physical Form must be completed by a parent/guardian and doctor. In order for the physical to be accepted for the 2021-2022 school year, it cannot be filled out and dated by a doctor until May 1, 2021 or after. Once completed, please drop it off to Woodson's Activities Office, Woodson's Main Office or scan it to the Athletic Trainer Chris Hogge at chogge@fcps.edu. This must be turned in prior to participating in athletics.

The form is also available at https://www.vhsl.org/sports-medicine/physical-examination/, under Resources.

18. Parent Technology Help Desk

To support families who are working with their children during distance learning, FCPS launched a new Parent Technology Help Desk. The number is 1-833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS). It will be answered by staff 7 a.m.to 11 p.m., seven days a week. If the help desk is unable to solve the issue on the phone with the parent or guardian, they will enter a ticket on the parent’s behalf and the request for help will be transferred to the appropriate FCPS team.

Parents or guardians who need help in a language other than English should let help desk staff know, and a interpreter will join them on the line. (FCPS also has existing parent information phone lines, available in eight different languages, that can assist with general questions about FCPS.)

FCPS has also set up an online portal to allow older students and parents and guardians to request technology help directly.
