Investment Workshop for students and families
May 12 from 7:30-8:30 p.m.
This workshop is for families and will talk about the basics of how to invest your money at a young age. Many people think investing is for adults only, but by educating and getting young people involved with managing their money now, they are more set up for their financial future.
This workshop will be led by a Woodson senior, Jesse Silkowitz, who has studied investing and participated actively in investing from a young age. If you want to invest but don’t know where to begin, this workshop is for you! It doesn’t take much to get started and if managed correctly, your $100 from Grandma could grow exponentially over the next few years. We will cover why to invest, when to invest, and how to invest. Investment is a simple way to grow your money and this workshop will help you take the first steps!
Please sign-up to reserve your spot and a Zoom link will be sent to you the day prior to the event: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0D44ADAC29A4FA7-investing
WTW NEWS & EVENTS
Spring SOL Testing
Students will be taking Standards of Learning (SOL) End of Course (EOC) tests as federal and state education departments decided not to cancel them.
SOLs will take place Monday-Wednesday, May 17th-19th
Monday, May 17th - Science SOL
Tuesday, May 18th - Reading and History SOL
Wednesday, May 19th - Mathematics SOL
If you have questions about SOL testing, please contact Woodson's Assessment Coach, Kathleen Guinee at kpguinee@fcps.edu.
Students who continue to learn virtually will have to come to school ahead of the SOL testing window in May to connect their laptops to the FCPS network, run the FCPS Health Check, and have their laptops updated if needed. This must be done in order to participate in SOL testing this spring.
To help facilitate this, please sign up for a Tech Support appointment using the FCPS Parent/Student Tech Support Portal.
Attendance Updates
Early Checkouts from School
If your student is in-person and needs to check out during the day, send a note detailing the checkout. The student should present that note to the Attendance Office upon arrival at school and will be given a pass to leave at the time indicated. For more information regarding attendance procedures, visit the Woodson Attendance Site.
Calls During AP and SOL Testing
During AP, IB and SOL testing at high schools, morning attendance telephone calls, texts and emails to home will not occur through Friday, June 11th.
This temporary suspension reflects the fact that students are often in designated testing locations (in-person or virtually) during the normal attendance-taking time. The evening attendance telephone calls and emails will still remain in place.
Textbook/Library Book Returns
Please begin to return textbooks that are no longer needed for this school year.
If you are an in-person student, please return your textbooks beginning Tuesday, May 11th to the subject labeled carts in the hallways.
If you are a virtual student, please return your textbooks beginning Monday, May 10th to the cart outside of door 1.

WTW CAVS SPORTS RECAP
Cav Varsity Spring Updates
Varsity Boys Tennis
The team went undefeated on the season, and clinched the Patriot District / 2021 Championship after their win over Robinson last week!
This week begins the individual Districts tournament, which will be hosted by Fairfax High School. Vincent Truong, Ansh Pathapadu, and Collin Ollis will represent Woodson in singles. Doubles partners Vincent T. / Ansh P., Collin O. / Khoi Huynh, and Josh Fields / Jack Gelman will compete in the doubles bracket. Go CAVS!
Varsity Rifle Team
Woodson Rifle couldn’t be more excited for Seniors Meredith Ivey, Nate Wehrlen, and Tori Kopelen, Juniors Kyle Barron and Victoria Cross, and Freshman Ben Hayes, all who will be heading to Michigan for the Junior Olympics in air rifle. These athletes will shoot two rounds of sixty shots standing in this national competition. We wish these Cavaliers the best as they compete this coming weekend!
Varsity Baseball
Looking to bounce back from an 0-3 start to the season, Woodson’s Varsity faced off against South County on Saturday afternoon. The Stallions entered the game with a 2-1 record, fresh off an extra innings victory over Patriot Division rival West Springfield.
The visiting Cavaliers got off to a quick start when leadoff hitter Colin Jones doubled down the left field line. The Stallions retired the next two batters, but cleanup hitter Connor Krahulec worked a base on balls, while Jones advanced to third on a wild pitch. With runners on the corners, Coach McColley had Krahulec steal second. When the catcher threw down to second, Jones took off for the plate. The Stallions infield cut off the throw and came home with the ball, but they were too late to stop the speedy Jones from scoring.
After Woodson’s starting pitcher Co-Captain Brady Lencz shut down the Stallions in the bottom of the inning, the Cavs bats really came alive in the 2nd. Co-Captain Vincent Altieri walked, followed by a bunt single from Colton Lennen. After Tommy Stribling was hit by a pitch, the bases were loaded for Freshman Ethan Conklin. After looking at two quick strikes, Conklin fought back as he fouled off two tough pitches, then worked an RBI walk. Jones followed with a ground ball up the middle that forced Conklin at second, but scored two more runs. A double from Lencz extended the Cavs’ lead to 5-0.
South County closed the gap to 5-2 with runs in the 3rd and 4th, but the Cavalier offense rose to the challenge with another rally in the top of the 5th. Jones walked, Lencz singled, and Krahulec was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Senior Co-Captain Anthony Meaders walked, scoring Jones. Lencz came home on a wild pitch. Lars Greenlee doubled past a diving left fielder to plate two more and Woodson led 9-2.
The Cavaliers earned their first victory of the season not only with their improved offensive attack, but also with excellent pitching. Lencz was strong on the mound all day, holding South County to two runs over five innings. He struck out five, against three hits and one walk. Sophomore pitcher Ben Smallwood pitched the last two innings, giving up three hits, but no runs. Defensive highlights included Lencz picking off a runner in the 1st, a 5-4-3 double play in the 2nd, and a spectacular diving catch by Conklin in the 6th.
Varsity Girls Soccer
The Lady Cavaliers opened their season at “the Pat” on April 29 against South County with a 4 – 1 loss. The Stallions used their speed and ball possession skill to take a 2 – 0 lead at halftime and kept the pressure up all game. Keeper Brigid Donohoe stood tall and made a number of great saves, but was peppered with shots throughout the game. Lady Baumann Nedeff took a nice long ball off the foot of Zoe D’Amato and used her speed to get behind the defense to score the Lady Cavs only goal. It had been 700+ days since the Lady Cavaliers took to the pitch for an official game and despite the outcome, it was great to see the ladies competing again.
The Lady Cavaliers ventured across Braddock Rd on May 3 to take on the Lake Braddock Bruins. After some good offensive pressure, Allison Williams scored on a header off a corner kick and the team had their first lead of the season. Unfortunately, it was short lived as the Bruins countered with 2 goals within 5 minutes of each other to take a 2- 1 lead at halftime. In the second half, the Bruins long ball approach clicked again and it was 3 – 1, 4 minutes into the 2nd half. The Lady Cavaliers worked hard and created a few scoring opportunities against the aggressive Bruins defense, but were unable to score the rest of the way, falling 3 to 1.
On Friday night, May 7, the Lady Cavaliers travelled to West Springfield to take on the Spartans. On a rain filled and cold evening, the Spartans found extra motivation for their seniors on their Senior night and jumped out to a lead and never looked back. Audrey Fisher scored in the second half, making the final 4 to 1 Spartans. Come out and support the Lady Cavs at our Senior Night, Tuesday, May 11 at 7:15pm vs Robinson.
Varsity Softball
The Woodson Varsity Softball team opened up District play at home Thursday night against Lake Braddock by celebrating Senior Night. Dr. Floyd was on hand for a pre-game ceremony to honor the three Seniors, Tanvi Breinig, Haley Banker and Jennah Walcott.
Woodson fell to Lake Braddock in a hard fought slugfest. Junior Veronica Udowitz led the offensive attack for Woodson with 2 hits and 2 RBI. Senior Haley Banker had 2 hits as well as Sophomore Sarah Banker and Freshmen Emma Flemming and Claire Warden.
On Saturday afternoon the Woodson Varsity Softball Team traveled to District power South County. The young Woodson team starting 4 freshmen, 3 sophomores and 2 juniors lost 10-0. Starting pitcher Sophomore SJ Schatzman pitched 4-1/3 innings allowing only 2 earned runs.
