The Lion’s Roar

May 7, 2021

You might have thought today was just Friday, but all the students at Lane knew it was more than that - it was Slime Day!

Thanks to your generous contributions to the PTA's Dance Fit Boosterthon fundraiser last month, pushing us more than 50% beyond our goal, Mrs. Prahl honored her promise to get slimed - not just once, but by every grade level (after she worked on the roof earlier in the week to fulfill another promise). What a supportive principal and a great sport!

Here are some pictures from the Kindergarten sliming.

News & Notes

Student Placement for Upcoming School Year

We welcome feedback from parents to help with student placement for next year. You have the best overall knowledge of your child and his/her unique traits.

The class-placement process is approached very carefully and thoroughly. In order to provide the best environment for students, we seek input from both staff and parents. Please share your thoughts on the needs of your child by answering the questions on this form.

When completing the form, please follow these guidelines:

  • Share the qualities of a teacher and classroom environment that would best meet your child’s needs.
  • Let us know if you feel that your child should be separated from another student. We will take that request into consideration. Please remember that best friends do not necessarily belong in the same instructional group.
  • PLEASE DO NOT REQUEST A TEACHER BY NAME OR GENDER. Additionally, please do NOT include negative information about past teachers, as the teachers read these forms when assisting with class assignments. If you do include such information, please know it will be deleted.

If you are interested in sharing this information, please complete the form and return it by May 28, 2021.

Please note: Because of enrollment changes over the summer, class assignments will not be finalized until the end of August 2021.

Please Let Us Know If You’ll Be Back!

We are still collecting responses on our Student Intention Form for the 2021 – 2022 school year. In order to determine how many classroom teachers we will need, we would like to know who is planning to return to Lane and who will be moving to a new area. This form is not binding, but even preliminary information can be very helpful!

We usually send home paper Student Intention Forms, but this year with so many students still learning at home, we have chosen to use a Google form instead. Thank you!

Calling 5th and 6th Graders! Do You Want to Sing? Do You Love Musical Theatre?

If you answered “Yes,” please join Hayfield Secondary School Choirs for an in-person, socially distanced rehearsal, music video and virtual performance for the HSS Spring Choir Concert, “Broadway to Hollywood!”

The in-person rehearsal will take place in the Hayfield Secondary Auditorium on Thursday, May 20th from the time Lane dismisses (as soon as you can get to Hayfield) until 5:30 p.m. The performance will be recorded during the workshop.

The Hybrid Concert/Virtual Viewing Event will take place on Tuesday, June 1st at 7 p.m.

For more details (including COVID safety protocols) and registration information, download the flyer here. Once you register, the Google classroom will contain the song to practice so when you arrive on May 20th, you can have some understanding of the music.

Virtual Day for All Students on Tuesday, June 8th!

Tuesday, June 8th is Election Day when Fairfax County voters will be voting in several key primaries. The Fairfax County Electoral Board and City of Fairfax Electoral Board will be using 165 school facilities as polling locations. Therefore, all students will participate in virtual learning that day.

SOL Testing is Underway!

We have started our annual series of Standards of Learning (SOL) tests in grades 3 through 6. You can find a complete calendar with testing dates for all grade levels on our school website. You can view a video presentation about SOLs here and access the slide presentation with active links here.

PTA News

Thanks for Your Tremendous, Generous Support!

As the school year winds down, the PTA would like to thank the entire Lane community for its ongoing strong and generous support this unusual school year.

Our Boosterthon “Dance Fit” fundraiser was a HUGE success! With your support, we blew away our goal of $12,500 by over 50%, ending up just shy of our “reach” goal of $20,000! Those funds will go directly to provide much-needed upgrades to our classrooms and other programs that touch every student in the school. Thank you!

We’d also like to thank every family who showed their appreciation to the Lane staff this week during Teacher Appreciation Week. We are especially grateful for the PTA committee who planned such a generous program for the week in which all families could easily participate.

Congratulations to the New PTA Board!

At the PTA meeting this week, elections were held for leadership positions next year. Here is the new Executive Board:

President: Krystal Walker
VP Communication: Anne Parnell
VP Fundraising: Tricia Pietravalle
VP Education: Cynthia Brown
VP Social: Michaele Hardy
Treasurer: Mora Farhad
Membership: Stephany Dula-Strong and Abraham Walker

Thank you to all of them for volunteering to serve in these important positions!

Rec-PAC Is Back This Summer!

Rec-PAC is a six-week, structured recreation program operated by the Fairfax County Park Authority for elementary school children. Participants enjoy activities such as fitness, indoor and outdoor games, team sports, nature, crafts, special events, talent shows and play sessions. Weekly activities incorporate character-building activities. A ratio of at least one staff person to 18 participants is standard. Enthusiastic leaders include college students and school teachers who bring a variety of skills. The program will run from June 28th to August 5th with a different fun theme every week! You can sign up for all six weeks or just the pick individual weeks that sound the most intriguing. All Rec-PAC locations will provide breakfast and lunch FREE for all campers.

Registration is open now through June 18th. Partial scholarships are available, making the cost as low as $12 per child, per week.

Please note that all Rec-PAC sites will adhere to COVID safety protocols and sites will be capped at the number of campers they can accept.

For more details and registration info, check out the online brochure at https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/sites/parks/files/assets/documents/camps/rec-pac/2021-recpac-brochure.pdf.
