Supporting Our McNair Community

There is no doubt that the Covid-19 pandemic has had a tremendous impact on our lives no matter where we reside in the world.  While we are moving towards some semblance of normalcy as we look forward to the 2021-2022 school year, we know that many of our families are feeling the devastating impact of this pandemic in India and other areas around the world.  When our family, those we are born to and those we choose, are in pain, we are in pain, and we know that those feelings of sadness, loss, frustration, and anger can impact our young Mustangs.  We want you to know that we are here for you and that if you need support on how to talk to or support your student during these difficult times, please know that our counseling team is at your disposal.   For support or more information, please contact our counselors, Donna Ford at DMFord@fcps.edu or Kristin Coe at kicoe@fcps.edu.  Families can also contact the school office at 703-793-4800 for help.  All inquiries and support will be kept confidential.

Kindergarten Orientation on Monday, May 10

Kindergarten Orientation at McNair is scheduled for Monday, May 10, at 10 a.m.  This meeting will be held virtually, and parents can access the link here.  Orientation packets were sent home to parents this week and should be arriving Friday or Saturday.

If your child will be five years old by September 30 and you haven’t contacted the school about kindergarten enrollment, now is the time!   Parents can contact the McNair ES office at 703-793-4800 to begin the enrollment.  Please go to our McNair website for more information and the forms to get the registration process started.

Virtual Program Update for 2021-2022

FCPS is excited to have all staff and students return in the fall to five days of in-person instruction! For planning purposes, FCPS is asking families with current virtual students or with students who will be new to FCPS for the 2021-22 SY to let us know if you intend to apply for the Virtual Program this fall based on your child’s documented medical need. If you do intend to apply for the Virtual Program, please complete this Intent to Apply form. Doing so DOES NOT guarantee Virtual Program enrollment for your child. You must still complete the COVID-19 Health Eligibility form, which includes a health/medical certification of need to be filled out by a licensed physician, nurse practitioner, psychiatrist, or a licensed clinical psychologist; and you must submit a Virtual Program Enrollment Application between May 17 and May 21.

If your child(ren) has a health/medical need for instruction in the Virtual Program, please:

  1. Fill out the Intent to Apply form between May 5-9.
  2. Download the COVID-19 Health Eligibility Form which requires a health/medical certification of need that must be completed by a licensed physician, nurse practitioner, psychiatrist, or a licensed clinical psychologist.
  3. Submit completed COVID-19 Health Eligibility Form with health/medical certification to virtualenrollment@fcps.edu between May 17-21. Upon submission, families will receive an electronic reply with detailed instructions on how to complete the Virtual Program Enrollment Application via the online application portal between May 17-21.

FCPS’ Central Virtual Program Enrollment Team will contact parents with a decision by June 1. For more information, explore the FCPS Virtual Program webpage.

Your Input for Class Groupings

Please remember that we are accepting parent input for class groupings until May 14, 2021.

It’s important for parents to know that creating class assignments for next year requires careful consideration and the involvement of many staff members.  We know that a good teacher-student match and a productive mix of children are ingredients for success.  If you feel that you have information about your child that the school staff may not know, particularly regarding friendships or neighborhood factors, please submit it to the principal, Merrell Dade, in writing by Friday, May 14, 2021.  Our teachers use this information to create preliminary class groupings in May/June.

We also ask that you do not request specific teachers.  This does not take into account the many variables to be considered such as grade-level changes or reductions in staff.  It is far more valuable to share particular academic or behavioral concerns.  Be assured that, with or without a parent letter, your child’s strengths and needs are considered in this lengthy and complex process.

Summer Practice Books

Summer Practice Books will be mailed home to FCPS students to provide suggested activities for students to support continued learning.  Families who have opted-out of paper mailings from the division will only receive digital copies of the Summer Practice Books.  Books will be mailed home to families in early June to arrive before the last day of school, June 11, 2021.  Families will receive email communication in May about upcoming book arrival.  Digital versions of books will be emailed to the enrolling parent in PDF format the week of June 7, 2021.

  • Pre-Kindergarten students will receive one interdisciplinary Summer Practice Book.
  • Students enrolled in grades K-8 in 2020-21 will receive one Language Arts Practice Book and one Math Practice Book by course enrollment.  These books will also include information and guidance about digital tools that can be accessed by students and families to support learning throughout the summer.
  • English Learners and Special Education students may receive additional or customized books.

More information can be accessed on the Summer Practice Books public webpage
