Message from Dr. Smith

Hello Bruin Families,

This week has been a wonderful week celebrating our staff for Teacher Appreciation Week. Thank you to our PTSA, Student Government Association and Student Council Association for sponsoring gifts that helped us show our gratitude. There's still time to send a note to your child's teachers.

There are updates in this week's newsletter that provide important information regarding the end of the year. There is SOL and AP testing information below, along with the Final Exam Schedule.

FCPS has several surveys that they will be sending out to families, and we want you to be aware of these. We encourage you to complete them and share honest feedback. Below are the surveys and dates you can expect to receive them:

  • May 5-14: Anti-Bias/Anti-Racism Policy Survey
  • May 17-21: Distance Learning Check-In (Random Sampling)
  • May 28-June 11: Distance Learning Spring Comprehensive Surveys

As we come to the end of our school year, there are many activities and information coming your way.  Our staff are here to support you; please don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teachers, counselor or Subschool Principal.

United as Bruins,

Daniel W. Smith, Ed.D.

The 2020-21 Year End Events Calendar has updated information regarding the last two weeks of school.  This calendar includes Senior event information, final exam schedule and laptop collection.

All students will be asked to turn in their school issued laptop at then end of this year.  This will allow the laptops to receive important updates and maintenance.  Seniors will turn them in on June 4th, and 7th grade through 11 grade students will turn in their laptops on June 11th.

Students who will be attending academic summer programs for FCPS will have the ability to receive a laptop back before those programs begin.

Asian American Heritage Month

What is Asian American Heritage Month?

How to Celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month at Home:

Jewish American Heritage Month

From Ramadan, Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, to Mother’s Day and Memorial Day, May marks a time of celebration and commemoration for many communities across the country. These 31 days are also designated as Jewish American Heritage Month (JAHM) when we pay tribute to the achievements and contributions made by American Jews throughout our nation’s history.

The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum join in paying tribute to the generations of Jewish Americans who have helped form the fabric of American history, culture, and society. More information is available online

Parent Volunteers Needed

Your help is needed to proctor in-person AP exams. No experience is necessary and you’ll be paired with an experienced staff member for support. Plus, you can get your steps in too! Choose as many time slots as you are able to assist with monitoring during student AP exams. Please note that you may not proctor an exam your student is taking but you don’t have to be the parent of an AP student to volunteer. Parents can sign up using this link to the parent volunteer signup:  https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0944a8ad2ca1fb6-lake3

Exam Prep Strategy

Prepping review sessions for SOL, AP, or final exams?  Feeling like there’s no way one teacher can answer all your students’ questions? Try a collaborative study group (CSG). In CSGs, students prepare points of confusion ahead of time and then work together using critical thinking and Socratic dialogue to study, learn, and answer each other’s questions. Students do the heavy lifting, and teachers chime in when needed! Here’s a how-to guide for Collaborative Study Groups brought to you by AVID.

Important FCPS Communications

Earlier this week, two important communications were sent to families by Superintendent Brabrand. The first was regarding a Virtual Program for the 2021-22 School Year and was sent to virtual families only. The letter included a link to the Intent to Apply form, which will close on May 9. Families who are seeking to keep their child(ren) virtual this fall will need to complete this form by Sunday.

The second communication explained the most recent grading updates. One of the key changes for middle and high school students is to allow students to request a mark of “P” (pass) instead of a letter grade in select courses. Lake Braddock emailed a follow-up communication with deadlines of May 17 (for seniors) and June 1 (for underclassmen and middle school students). If you have any questions about the grading updates, please contact your child's counselor.

Stress Less Week May 10-14

Philanthropy Club Events

The month of April included two important global events that the Philanthropy Club enthusiastically recognized. April 22nd was Earth Day and April 23rd was Youth Service Day. In support of these two important occasions, on May 2nd, the Philanthropy Club members picked up litter in their own neighborhoods, parks, and other community public places, including Lake Braddock.  Philanthropy Club members challenge everyone in our Lake Braddock community to give their time, talents, or treasures everyday to protect the environment!

Important Testing Information

SOL & AP Testing Calendar for May

The May testing calendar is now available and listed below.  The SOL test calendar can also be accessed here: https://lakebraddockss.fcps.edu/about/sol-schedule .

Please note that students enrolled in Math 7 HONORS will test on May 27, with their grade level, even though they take the 8th grade level math SOL. This is in order to keep our grade levels together for class and proctor scheduling purposes.

SOL exams will start at 8:15, with the exception of EOC Reading (HS) and Science 8, which will start at 11:45 a.m. AP students should check with their AP teachers about the timing of their AP tests, both in-person and online. Breakfasts and lunches will be provided in the building for students who want one. Students may return home when they have completed SOL testing for the day, unless they are waiting for bus transportation. Information about requesting bus transportation is included in this newsletter.

* Friday, May 28: Algebra I (both HS & MS)

*Please note that the week of Tuesday, May 25 through Friday, May 28, all classes will be all virtual, at home. In order to accommodate the large amount of student testing that must occur in the building while also maintaining health and safety guidelines and internet capabilities for online testing, it was necessary to shift all our students to a virtual setting while we conduct testing in the building. Students who are not in the building for SOL or AP testing during this week will continue their classes synchronously at home. We will still maintain Wednesday, May 26 and Thursday, May 27 as catch-up days where students will check in (online) with their teachers for support and remediation.

VHSL Physical Form *NEW VERSION* for 2021-2022

Please mark your calendars for our annual physical night, which will be hosted at West Springfield on Monday, July 19.

The VHSL has released their latest version of the VHSL Physical Form, which was revised in January 2021. This new model includes some additional medical history questions, combines previous medical history questions that collectively asked for the same information, provides more detailed descriptions of what the physician should be checking for in the exam portion of the physical, and even includes some changes to the format of each page, drawing attention and focus to required responses and signatures!

Due to the extensive amount of changes to this document, FCPS (Lake Braddock) will ONLY accept this new version of the VHSL physical form for athletic participation in 2021-2022. Any VHSL physical exam submitted for next school year must be dated on or after May 1, 2021 and be completed on the Revised January 2021 version. You can find the new form here  VHSL PHYSICAL FORM 2021.
