The Principal's Desk!

Greetings Families,

We have had a wonderful week celebrating our staff and a big thanks to all of you who have helped make this a great week for our staff!  Also, Happy Mother's Day to all the awesome mothers in our DRES community!

We are focused on completing the current school year and also turn our attention to next school year.  Please join us for our last PTA meeting on Tuesday (5/11) at 7:00 pm and I will be available to answer questions.   Some reminders for the 2021-22 school year:

  • We welcome our students, staff, and families back for five days this fall. If you plan to come for five days in the fall, you do not need to do anything more. We will see you in August.
  • See additional information below if you would like to provide information for 2021-22 class placement for your child.
  • We need your help in projecting our total enrollment for next school year.  For families NOT returning to Daniels Run Elementary School in the fall of 2021-22, please email the Registrar, Ms. Araceli Nunez, anunez@fcps.edu  by May 31th, 2021.
  • If your child is currently receiving virtual instruction or will be new to FCPS for the 2021-22 SY, you should have received an email from FCPS this past Wednesday (5/5) asking your intent to apply for the Virtual Program option for your child for next year. Only students with a documented medical or health need will be eligible for Virtual Program instruction.

Additional Resources:

Please contact me directly at cmsmith@fcps.edu or call the main office (703-279-8400) if there is anything our school team can do to support your student and family.

Thanks for your support,

Chris Smith

2021-22 School Year Class Placement Information

We are in the planning stages for the 2021-22 school year and to help determine the appropriate educational environment for your child, we invite you to share information regarding your child’s needs by completing the Daniels Run Parent Input Form for the 2020-21 School Year. Your input is appreciated but it is not required to complete the form.  Every effort will be made to place your child in the environment you request, but please keep in mind that not all requests can be granted. Please do not request specific teachers, for this does not take into account the many variables to be considered. It is far more valuable to share particular academic or behavioral information.  The form will be open and available to be completed through Friday, May 21st.

June 8th, Synchronous Learning Day

Tuesday, June 8, is the Democratic Primary Election. Because the Fairfax County Electoral Board and City of Fairfax Electoral Board will be using 165 school facilities as polling locations (including Daniels Run ES), June 8 will be a virtual synchronous learning day (no in-person classes) for students.

Calling All Library Books!

As of Monday, May 3rd there are 856 books that are overdue in the library. Most of these items are from the 2019-2020 school year which was disrupted in March 2020. The good news is this number decreased from August 2020 when 2,870 books were out! While overdue items continue to be returned, the total loss as it stands today is significant. The number of books we are missing comes to over $12,000 worth of materials that will need to be replaced over time. This will compete with purchasing newly released books for the library.

If you have books that are overdue, please take some time to sweep through your home to see what you can recover. Even if we only get half the books back it will be a huge help! Please email Sheila Brosnan (Librarian) if you have any questions or concerns (scbrosnan@fcps.edu). Students will not be charged for missing or damaged books.

Students can return the books directly to the library or place them in the plastic bin outside the front doors of the school”

Positivity Project!

Character trait for May 10-14: Leadership

Leadership means that you value each member of your group and inspire people to do their best. This can be both formal and informal. It is concerned with getting others to do what needs to be done while maintaining group morale to ensure readiness to act in the future. This character strength’s focus is on the personal qualities of leaders, rather than the practice of leadership. These qualities include the ability to understand others and inspire them toward a common goal, the capacity to mitigate conflict and mold consensus, and the desire to lead other people.
