Coates Families,
Yesterday, we learned that Mrs. Kelsey Burch, our band teacher for 5th & 6th grades, passed away after her yearlong battle with cancer.
Mrs. Burch served as the band teacher at Coates for the last 4 years while also teaching band at other elementary schools in FCPS including Sunrise Valley ES & Vienna ES. She led the band program at Sunrise Valley ES in Reston for the last decade. She is a product of FCPS herself, having attending Sunrise Valley, Langston Hughes MS, & South Lakes HS as a student. She was widely respected by colleagues and loved by her students. At Sunrise Valley ES, the band room will be named in her honor, and they are developing a band-inspired mural.
At Coates, our school counselors will be in contact with each student of Mrs. Burch this week to explain the event and offer support if needed.
As a Coates community, we extend our thoughts and prayers to Mrs. Burch and her family.
