Updates from the Student Services Team

In the month of May, the Student Services Team focused on exploring college and career pathways with students. We enjoyed putting together a variety of activities to engage students' thinking and spark interests in future opportunities. Please consider asking your student about:

  • The George Mason University Virtual Field Trip
  • The Chantilly Academy Presentation - This was an optional activity for students interested in learning more about the FCPS academy programs. We had 45 student attend. https://www.fcps.edu/registration/high-school-academies-and-specialized-programs
  • Their Academic Career Plan- Using the Naviance platform (https://www.fcps.edu/naviance), students have been building their on-line student portfolio. 7th grade students have completed a Strength Explorers Survey. This helps them identify their strengths and interests. 8th grade students have completed a Career Cluster Survey. This helps them identify career pathways that correlate with their strengths and interests. Both grade levels have also completed a SMART goal and began building Resumes.

Further College and Career information and resources are posted in counselors' Google Classrooms.

Upcoming Calendar Items:

  •  June 9th- Sam Anthony Speaks School-Wide Presentation (https://samanthonyspeaks.com/)
  • June 8th- Sam Anthony Speaks Parent Workshop/Presentation

May Book Discussions

photo

The librarians meet with students to discuss books in our Booklandia Google Classroom (code: fp34jor) each Wednesday during Hawks Nest. Please remind your students to let the librarians (kmbrinkman1@fcpscchools.net and cbcarlson@fcpsschools.net) know a day in advance if they’d like to attend. There will be treats for all attendees and for anyone who completes the challenge of the week. Our book discussion topics for May will be:

  • 5/05 - Star Wars / Science Fiction - Tuesday is May the 4th, aka: Star Wars Day!
  • 5/15 - Books that are Movies - Is the book always better?
  • 5/26 - Disaster Fiction: It’s the end...of the school year, but not for the unlucky characters in Disaster Fiction.

Can’t join us, but want to learn about the topic? We will post the notes for each discussion, including a link to the topic challenge for the week, in the Booklandia classroom once the Meet ends.
