Investment Workshop for students and families
May 12 from 7:30-8:30 p.m.
This workshop is for families and will talk about the basics of how to invest your money at a young age. Many people think investing is for adults only, but by educating and getting young people involved with managing their money now, they are more set up for their financial future.
This workshop will be led by a Woodson senior, Jesse Silkowitz, who has studied investing and participated actively in investing from a young age. If you want to invest but don’t know where to begin, this workshop is for you! It doesn’t take much to get started and if managed correctly, your $100 from Grandma could grow exponentially over the next few years. We will cover why to invest, when to invest, and how to invest. Investment is a simple way to grow your money and this workshop will help you take the first steps!
Please sign-up to reserve your spot and a Zoom link will be sent to you the day prior to the event: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0D44ADAC29A4FA7-investing
WTW NEWS & EVENTS
Spring SOL Testing
Students will be taking Standards of Learning (SOL) End of Course (EOC) tests as federal and state education departments decided not to cancel them.
SOLs will take place Monday-Wednesday, May 17th-19th
Monday, May 17th - Science SOL
Tuesday, May 18th - Reading and History SOL
Wednesday, May 19th - Mathematics SOL
If you have questions about SOL testing, please contact Woodson's Assessment Coach, Kathleen Guinee at kpguinee@fcps.edu.
Students who continue to learn virtually will have to come to school ahead of the SOL testing window in May to connect their laptops to the FCPS network, run the FCPS Health Check, and have their laptops updated if needed. This must be done in order to participate in SOL testing this spring.
To help facilitate this, please sign up for a Tech Support appointment using the FCPS Parent/Student Tech Support Portal.
Attendance Updates
Early Checkouts from School
If your student is in-person and needs to check out during the day, send a note detailing the checkout. The student should present that note to the Attendance Office upon arrival at school and will be given a pass to leave at the time indicated. For more information regarding attendance procedures, visit the Woodson Attendance Site.
Calls During AP and SOL Testing
During AP, IB and SOL testing at high schools, morning attendance telephone calls, texts and emails to home will not occur through Friday, June 11th.
This temporary suspension reflects the fact that students are often in designated testing locations (in-person or virtually) during the normal attendance-taking time. The evening attendance telephone calls and emails will still remain in place.
Pass Grade Deadline
For the 2020-21 school year, high school students have until Monday, May 10th to designate the final mark for two of their current courses as Pass instead of final grades "A" through "D". Additional information can be found on the FCPS Secondary Grading and Reporting site.

Mark your calendars! Woodson Drama will be performing the musical Working (2012)! You can stream the show May 14 (7pm), May 15 (1pm, 4pm and 7pm), and May 16 (1pm, 4pm and 7pm). Information coming soon at www.wtwdrama.org

Free Prom Gowns
Does your student need a prom dress or a suit? Prom is coming up on Saturday, May 15th.

WTW CAVS SPORTS RECAP
Cav Varsity Spring Updates
Varsity Baseball
After losing a dozen Seniors from last year's team, Woodson's Varsity fields a young squad with only five Seniors. The Cavaliers started their season with a tough 5-2 loss to a veteran Annandale team. The Atoms were led by the dominant pitching of Danny Salisbury, who struck out 9 over 6 innings, while allowing only 3 hits and 1 run.
Woodson's starting pitcher Co-Captain Brady Lencz got off to a great start with 6 strikeouts in the first 2 innings. Unfortunately, his strong start was derailed in the 3rd inning by a walk and an error in the outfield which put runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Both runners scored on pitches that went to the backstop before the defense buckled down to get out of the inning.
Woodson cut the lead to 2-1 in the 4th inning when Lencz tripled to right field. Lencz then scored on a throw to first base after Annandale's catcher dropped strike three to the next batter.
Annandale scratched out another run in the 5th after an infield throwing error allowed a runner to score. The Atoms extended their lead in the 6th inning when Spencer Robson homered to left field. A double and an infield single followed, giving Annandale a 5-1 lead
The Cavaliers tried to mount a comeback with base hits from Tommy Stribling and Ben Smallwood to lead off the bottom of the 6th, but Salisbury struck out the side to quash the rally. In the 7th, Woodson got the fans excited when Connor Krahulec walked and Anthony Meaders doubled, but relief pitcher Robson got out of trouble with three straight strikeouts to end the game.
While Woodson's defensive lapses hurt, there were also several highlights in the field. Lars Greenlee made a great diving stop at 1B to keep the Atoms from doing more damage in the 2nd inning. Outfielder Colin Jones made an outstanding running catch on a ball in deep right-center. Third baseman Krahulec made an excellent play on a grounder in the 6th to keep Annandale from a big inning. Co-Captain Jay Sorkin was smooth all day at SS, handling 4 grounders and a popup. After finishing his day on the mound, Lencz moved to 1B and made numerous difficult catches to help out his infielders.
On Saturday, May 1st, the young Woodson Cavaliers faced a tall task in an away contest against the Madison Warhawks. Prep Baseball Report’s preseason rankings rate Madison as the #1 team in Virginia and include three Warhawk players on its preseason All-State teams.
The Warhawks quickly proved that their preseason accolades were well deserved, scoring 8 runs in the 1st inning. Madison continued the offensive assault in the 2nd frame, with the first three batters reaching base, before the Cavaliers turned to their bullpen.
After Coach McColley summoned sophomore pitcher Ben Smallwood to the mound, the Cavs stepped up their game and played some excellent defense. After allowing a single, Smallwood got the next hitter to hit a ground ball to SS Jay Sorkin, who stepped on second, then threw to Brady Lencz at 1B for the double play.
The Cavaliers defense made another excellent play to end the 2nd. After Madison’s Triantos doubled off the center field wall, CF Colin Jones got to the ball quickly and fired it to 2B Vincent Altieri, who relayed it to Sorkin on the infield. Sorkin took the relay throw and threw behind the runner to Lencz, who had hustled over to cover 2B on the play, nailing Triantos, who had strayed too far off the bag.
That play seemed to build the confidence of Woodson’s fielders. Over the last two innings, Woodson held Madison scoreless and only allowed two batters to reach base.
Woodson senior co-Captain Altieri had the team’s lone base hit with an infield single in the top of the 2nd, but Madison promptly erased the threat with a ground ball double play.
While the final score of 13-0 was lopsided, games like this one provide an opportunity to test a team’s mettle and challenge the players to raise their game to a new level. Woodson begins Patriot District play tonight with a game at South County. The Cavs have demonstrated that their pitching and defense have the potential to play at a high level. Hopefully, the offense will as well.
Varsity Boys Tennis
The team is an impressive 7-0 this season! Last Friday’s match against Lake Braddock was called early due to severe weather, but the Cavs had already secured the win. The team honored its lone Senior, Khang Duong, last Thursday before the South County match. Coach Carr thanked Khang for his 4 years of dedicated play and leadership on the Varsity Tennis team. He, and his incredible overhead shot, will be missed! The last three regular season matches are this week.
Varsity Girls Lacrosse (GLAX)
The Cavs bring to the 2021 campaign a mixture of experienced Junior and Seniors with young underclassmen, paired with lots of hard work from off-season training. The Cavs defeated Oakton 10-9 last Monday at home at Pat Cunningham Stadium to open the Spring Season and currently stand with a record of 1-0.
Varsity Track and Field
The Cavs hosted their first Track and Field event of Spring 2021 at Pat Cunningham Stadium last Tuesday, on a sunny and pleasantly warm afternoon and evening. The event was high energy with the Cav athletes and their competitors expending their best efforts. It was staffed enthusiastically by volunteers to coordinate and run the operations in addition to the outstanding coaching. It was truly a Great Day to be a Cavalier!
Cav Varsity Fall Season Updates-
Varsity Golf
Season Recap
W.T. Woodson Co-Ed Golf finished with a regular season record of 4 wins and 3 losses. They finished 5 in the Patriot District Tournament. Tytan Matthews and Minchan Kim both qualified for the Regional Tournament as well!
There’s a great squad coming back next year and they’ll be a real threat to the District once again!
Season Awards
MVP - This individual was our top golfer for most of the season. He was consistent all year, and his willingness to help others did not go unnoticed. Coaches, players, and officials from around the district and region approached our coach to compliment him on his course etiquette, approach, and his sportsmanship. Congratulations to our MVP - Minchan Kim!
Cavalier Award - The best way to describe this individual is as a true golfer. Their sportsmanship, willingness to learn, love of the game spoke volumes throughout the season. This person also proved that you don't have to be the best golfer to make an impact on the team, and that’s what they did. Congratulations to our Cavalier Award Recipient - Veronica Udowitz!
