PTO Thanks the Cooper Office Admin Team
The PTO partnered with Mrs. Barrow, Mrs. McLoughlin and Mr. Rath to thank our AMAZING front office admin team during last week’s Administrative Professional’s Day. The Cooper administrative team of Jan Ahearn, Annie Eisman, Aubrey Midgley, and Nancy Miner enjoyed a delicious luncheon provided by Mrs. Barrow and her team, and the PTO was happy to present them with gift cards as a token of our thanks for all they do for our students and parents. Thank you to this top notch team!
Orchestra Students: Langley Orchestra Wants YOU!
The Langley HS Orchestra is excited to welcome all string students to the 2021-22 season for what promises to be a much brighter year for music and performance.
The orchestra program is comprised of five classes that rehearse separately but often combine into three orchestras for concerts, assemblies, and assessments. There is one section for each grade level (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior) and one additional section (Philharmonic) which requires an audition and pulls from all grade levels. In addition, adjustments may be necessary for some students due to class scheduling, instrumentation of the ensembles, or advanced background and training.
There is a place in the orchestra for every string student who wishes to join and students are automatically placed into their grade-level class. However, those who wish to be considered for advanced placement, section seating, or Philharmonic are encouraged to submit an audition by video. The audition will comprise one scale of the student’s choosing (number of octaves and difficulty will be considered) and a short selection (1-2 min) that demonstrates the student’s tone, technique, and musicality. There is no need for special equipment – a video from a smartphone, tablet, or school laptop works fine and piano accompaniment is not necessary. Please be sure to introduce yourself at the beginning of your video.
Students already in Langley Orchestra will submit video auditions in Schoology. Students who will be new to Langley Orchestra should submit video auditions via this Google form by Tuesday, May 18, 2021.

Math Curriculum Changes
There is one final info session on the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) plan to revamp mathematics course options. The plan includes, among other details, removing the option of 9th and 10th graders to take differentiated math classes, such as Honors and AP math courses. Click here for a more general infographic on the initiative.
The session will be live-streamed on YouTube here at 6:30 pm on May 25, and will focus on grades 9-10. All prior and upcoming session recordings are posted on this VDOE webpage. Submit questions or comments using this form or via email to vdoe.mathematics@doe.virginia.gov.
