Dear Bailey's Families,
During the week of May 3rd we will celebrate Staff Appreciation Week. Please take this opportunity to recognize the teachers and staff at Bailey’s ES for their outstanding work throughout this very different year of learning! Consider having your child make a card for their teacher or one of our staff members next week. Virtual students may drop off any items for staff members during school hours. Leave your labeled cards and/or gifts for our staff on one of the tables outside the office. Ring the bell to let us know you have dropped something off so we can be sure to deliver it to the appropriate staff member.
In the photos we shared this week, you will see that we have begun using the cafeteria for lunch. In an effort to maintain six feet of social distancing during meals, some of our classes are eating lunch in the cafeteria instead of in their classrooms. Students have truly enjoyed their time in the cafeteria! Thank you to all of the Bailey’s staff for supporting this transition. Next week we will begin serving hot lunches. We know students will love having a hot meal at lunchtime.
As always, thank you for your support of our school. We hope you have a great weekend!
Satonya, Jillian and Mirna

A Message from our Counselors
The counseling team recognizes the mixed emotions some virtual students may be having right now while some students return to the building. We would like to offer virtual students a space to connect and share with their peers. The counselors will be holding Google Meet ups for virtual students on Mondays beginning this coming Monday, May 3rd at 1:00 using this Google Meet link.
Students can join at whatever time they are available between 1:00-2:00 as this screen time is totally optional and intended to be a social activity led by the school counselors. If you feel your student would benefit, please share this this Google Meet link and we will see you soon.

SPRING SCHOOL-BASED AAP SERVICES NEWSLETTER ARTICLE
ADVANCED ACADEMIC PROGRAMS (AAP)
SCREENING FOR SCHOOL-BASED (LEVEL II-III) SERVICES
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in grades K-8. Learning experiences are designed to develop higher-level thinking through enrichment, acceleration, and extensions of the Program of Studies (POS). Teachers, administrators, and advanced academic resource teachers (AARTs) work together to provide the following levels of school-based services in each elementary school:
-
Critical and Creative Thinking Lessons, Grades K-6 (Level I)
All students in kindergarten through grade six receive level I services which consist of model lessons that are designed to teach critical and creative thinking skills. The lessons are modeled in all classrooms by AARTs and the thinking strategies are then used throughout the year by classroom teachers and other teachers who work with students. Student responses to these model lessons are used as part of the identification process for AAP services.
-
Differentiated Lessons in Areas of Academic Strength, Grades K-6 (Level II)
The AART collaborates with classroom teachers to provide additional challenge through lessons and resources that extend and enrich the POS. Level II services are part of a talent development pool.
-
Part-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-6 (Level III)
Students identified by a local school screening committee for part-time advanced academic services are challenged through models and strategies designed to extend and enrich the POS in the four core subject areas. Students receive direct instruction from the AART at the local school using curriculum from the AAP Curriculum and Resources to Support the Differentiated Framework. Students identified for Level III services continue to receive level III services through grade 6.
Screening for school-based services can happen at any time during the school year but is done schoolwide in spring to determine services for the next school year. Parents or guardians may initiate the screening for school-based (level II and III) services by submitting the AAP School-Based Services (Level II-III) Referral Form (available at https://www.fcps.edu/registration/advanced-academics-identification-and-placement/elementary-school/current-fcps at the bottom of the page in Forms) to the AART at Bailey’s Elementary prior to spring screening by May 7th.

Chicks in the Science Lab!
Dear Bailey’s Community,
I have exciting news! In thirteen days we will have chicks in the Science Lab.
Below is the BBCU link for the Chicken Cam! It will be pretty boring for a while as the eggs are just sitting in their incubators; however, this does allow us to remotely keep track of the temperature and humidity.
According to my research, the ideal temperature for the eggs at this stage is 38.06 degrees Celsius (or 100.5 degrees Fahrenheit). It is much worse to have a high temperature in the incubators than a low temperature. Just 15 minutes above 40.6 degrees Celsius (105 degrees Fahrenheit) will seriously damage the embryos.
The relative humidity should be around 60% for the first 18 days. On the final three days, the relative humidity should be closer to 65 to 70 percent.
The incubators also turn the eggs. Turning needs to happen 3 to 5 times per day.
Thank you for your continued support. Let me know if you have any questions at ffmisch@fcps.edu.

Garden Assistance Needed!
Dear Bailey’s Community,
This is Mr. Misch the science resource teacher at Bailey’s Primary.
I am seeking volunteers to help fill our beds in the new pollinator garden with shredded wood mulch. In an effort to prevent the spread of COVID, instead of having a large number of volunteers on the property at one time, I would like to have small family groups. We could also consider having very small groups of high school students or Scouts who need service hours. If this is something you would like to consider, please contact me, Mr. Misch, at ffmisch@fcps.edu.
Thank you for your continued support.

Library Book Information
Hello, Families!
When students return to school, please have them bring in school library books that are in your homes. Virtual students can return books at the meal pickup area Wednesday-Friday 9:30-3:00. We will be happy to see them returned to the library! Thank you!

Attendance Matters!
Please make sure that your child attends school every day! If your child is now coming to school for in-person learning, it is extremely important that they come to school on their in-person learning days. If your child is sick, please keep them home and contact the school and their teacher. Students who are supposed to attend school in-person will be marked absent if they stay home and log in virtually without a proper excuse (sick, doctors appointment, etc.) Thank you in advance for your support and cooperation.
