Hello Glen Forest Families!
As you are aware, we have been planning for an expansion of in-person learning from 2 days to 4 days for students who have been reporting to the building. At this time, virtual students are not being considered for in-person instruction, but we will let families know if this directive changes from the Region 2 Office. Thank you for your continued support and understanding. Please know that all of our eagles are very important to us, whether in-person or virtual!
Reminder: FLE lessons for K-2nd grade will take place beginning the week of May 10, 2021. FLE lessons for grades 3rd-5th will take place the week of May 31, 2021. Parents may opt-out to all or parts of the FLE curriculum. If you would like to opt out please submit the opt out Google Form found here https://forms.gle/n69FvXoDGGPhkNoi9 by Friday, May 7, 2021.
Go Eagles!

Boundary Proposed Changes
Fairfax County Public Schools monitors student enrollment to make decisions on how best to use school spaces. Many of the elementary school sin the Justice High School pyramid have experienced an increase in student enrollment in the past several years. Glen Forest ES is in that enrollment category. When a school becomes overcrowded, one way to reduce overcrowding is to adjust the school attendance boundary and re-assign some students to a different school that has more room. This is done through the boundary adjustment process. FCPS will be holding community meetings to share more information about the process.
A boundary meeting was held on April 21, 2021. If you were not able to attend the meeting please use this link to view the information shared at this meeting. LINK: https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/pdf/Presentation%20for%20Justice%20ES%20Boundary%20Study.pdf

School Board News
Tuesday’s School Board Return To School (RTS) work session will focus on plans to prepare for five days of learning in fall to include: updating bell schedules and bus schedules, expanded outdoor learning and lunch room capacity, exploring COVID-19 screening and diagnostic testing pilots, developing master schedules for 5 days a week of in-person instruction, monitoring health and vaccine updates, reinstating School Age Child Care (SACC), discontinuing the use of classroom monitors, as well as an expectation that all employees will discontinue the majority of telework and will report buildings in person and discontinuing the COVID-Related Leaves of Absence (LOA).
We are looking forward to in-person instruction as the primary mode of learning for all FCPS students during the 2021-22 school year. Please note that virtual learning options will be limited, based on need and will be the exception.
We will send you a more detailed update following the work session.
Need Technology Help
If parents or students need technology help, please check out the GFES web page: https://glenforestes.fcps.edu/technology-support
This link includes trouble shooting guides, common tech issues, how to resolve issues and how to submit a ‘tech ticket’. Parents are asked NOT to come to school as we don’t have a tech specialist available all during school hours. Instead we need a ‘tech ticket’ placed and once it is submitted, a tech specialist will reach out to you within 24 hours to assist you. Weekly tech times are held and those with tickets are invited to attend those times. We strive to ensure all our students can access easily and quickly their online classes.
Those families with school laptops are reminded you need to come onto school grounds MONTHLY to obtain all FCPS computer updates. You can do this at your convenience – 24/7. From the comfort of your vehicle you can start the laptop and then restart to obtain all updates. It only takes about 15 minutes. Doing this each month will ensure the school laptops are up to date.
SOL Testing – Coming Soon
Across Virginia, students will be taking Standards of Learning (SOL) tests this spring. Federal and state education departments have decided not to cancel this year’s assessments. In Fairfax County Public Schools, testing for grades 3-8 will be scheduled between April 26 and June 4, 2021.
-
All SOL tests are taken in-person at school. SOL tests are not available for remote delivery from home. Our staff will schedule specific SOL testing dates for your student. In some cases, it may be necessary for us to schedule an SOL testing appointment on a day when your student is not normally attending at school.
- For any SOL assessments this spring, you have the right to refuse testing for your student. The Right to Refuse Assessments webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/node/34277) offers information and considerations as you make this decision. If you choose to refuse the SOL tests, please complete this online Google form by Friday, April 23, 2021:
https://forms.gle/i1c9JNd8VAvenGKd7
Contact the main office at our school if you need help accessing or completing the form.
- If you choose to refuse the grade 3-8 SOL reading or mathematics test for your virtual student, you will have the opportunity for them to complete an alternative, non-SOL test at home. The Virginia Remote Student Progress Monitoring Test will provide information about strengths and areas for growth in grade level content standards.GFES will host a SOL Testing Parent Infor Meeting on Tuesday, April 27, 2021 ~ 6:30 – 7:00 pm. This meeting will be for grades 3rd, 4th and 5th. If you have questions about this testing, here is your chance to receive answers. Please join us virtually.
