Principal's Message

x

Dear Families,

I hope this message finds you doing better than a year ago at this time. Thank you for your continued partnership as we begin a new month and see the end of the 2020-21 school year in sight. I think most of us feel more hopeful for the future and what next year will bring! Mr. Credle and I couldn’t be prouder of our students’ resiliency and positivity that they show each day. Speaking of positivity, our staff continue to put a smile on each day and welcome students with warm hearts. Like you, they have been through so much this year both personally and professionally. I ask that you pause for a moment and let someone at Oak Hill know what it is that you have appreciated about them this school year. A written word of recognition goes a long way and what better time than during staff appreciation week!  You can recognize a staff member through the FCPS CARES Program.  And don’t forget, we have a parent volunteer who is collecting items to be arranged into small gift baskets to raffle off for staff. Please see the information below and if you are able to help, donations will be collected until May 6th.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to further support your child’s learning at Oak Hill!

Sincerely,

Holly DeVore, Principal

Staff Appreciation Donation Ideas

e

Next week is Staff Appreciation Week.  We would LOVE to honor as many staff members as we can.  Please sign up using this link with what gift(s) you would be willing to donate as one of the prizes to a staff member.  The more prizes we collect, the more staff we can honor.  Creativeness is encouraged!  There are around 105 staff members at Oak Hill, let's show them that we care.

You can drop off donations on the front porch of Wendy DeVight, at 3219 Kinross Circle, until May 6th.  If you have questions, please email Wendy, at Wendydevight@gmail.com.

Part-Time Advanced Academics Services-Level II-III

w

In addition to the AAP level IV Program, Fairfax County offers a continuum of services to meet children’s academic needs. Differentiated lessons (Level II) and Part-Time Advanced Academic Programs (Level III) are also available for students through a school screening process.  To learn more about these levels of service please visit the AAP website found here.

Screening for school-based services (Levels II-III) can happen at any time during the school year but is done schoolwide in spring to determine services for the next school year.   Multiple criteria are used to screen students for all levels of AAP services. Parents or guardians may initiate the screening for school-based (level II and III) services by submitting the Referral Form to the AART, Cathy Lahr, at cclahr1@fcps.edu by May 3, 2021.

2021-2022 Class Placement

gf

With the end of the school year approaching, it is time for the Oak Hill Staff to start preparing for the 2020-2021 school year.  Building a classroom of students is no easy task!  We must take many considerations into account such as heterogeneous groupings and balancing academic abilities.  We also consider how to maximize the support our resource teachers can provide students.

If you feel that there is pertinent information to support your child’s success for the upcoming school year, please complete this Parent Input Form by Friday, May 14, 2021 to ensure it is used for end of the year class placements. This system is not intended for families to request specific teachers. Class assignments are created by a team. Your child’s current teacher, specialists, and administrators collaborate to make well balanced classes where students can succeed. Oak Hill embraces collective responsibility and all of our staff are equipped to meet individual student needs.

Student Intention Survey 2021-2022

f

In order to ensure that we have the right number of staff in place to greet our returning students in August, we request that you fill out this simple survey indicating your child's intention to return to Oak Hill next year.  Please fill it out for each child attending Oak Hill by May 21, 2021.  If you indicate that you will not be returning, our registrar, Katherine Dillard, will reach out via email for more information.  Please contact Ms. Dillard with questions at kjdillard1@fcps.edu.

Planning for “5 in Fall” Underway

d

FCPS is planning for in-person instruction to be the primary mode of learning for all students during the 2021-22 school year. Plans were presented to FCPS’ School Board at a Work Session last week. The presentation covered health and safety updates, fourth quarter review, a summer learning preview, planning for fall 2021, and community outreach. View the presentation here.  More information will be posted as it becomes available on the fall 2021 planning webpage

Bike to School Day

v

Oak Hill will participate in Bike to School Day on Wednesday, May 5, to promote physical activity and reduce traffic congestion and pollution near schools.

Bike Month has been celebrated since 1956 to showcase the many benefits of bicycling and encourage more people to give biking a try. Biking helps us feel energized, engage with our neighbors, and reduce our carbon footprint.

A friendly reminder that bicycle helmets must be worn and safety traffic regulations followed. Bicycles can only be stored in the designated bicycle stands on each side of the school and must be secured by a lock provided by the student.

FCPS Music Education Program Receives National Recognition

c

Fairfax County Public Schools has been named a Best Community for Music Education by the NAMM (National Association for Music Merchants) Foundation. FCPS was recognized for its outstanding commitment to and support of music education, and for its efforts to provide music access and education to all students.

All Students to Be Virtual on June 8 Due to Democratic Primary Election

Get more information about the primary elections.

ESOL Tip of the Week

s

Problem solving in action this week!  Can you identify why my shoe felt funny?  What should I do about it? Three steps to problem solving: identify, decide, execute.  What is the best solution and why?  Give reasons for solutions.  Keep trying until something works!

Think about a favorite story.  What problem does the main character have?  Tell the story of how the main character solved the problem.   Use the “The problem is...The solution is…”  sentence structure.

What are some problems you have come across?  You can talk about them, write about them, or draw pictures to show all the great solutions that you come up with.  Practice this skill at home so that we can apply it here at school to content.

To learn more about how to help your child with problem solving at home, please refer to this article from Scholastic found here.
