Principal Message

Dear Families,

Welcome to another exciting week at MRES.  We will yet again, bring in more students for 4 days of in-person learning.  It is more important than ever that we all bring our patience and flexibility to each school day.  Teachers are facing new challenges and I appreciate your grace as they navigate yet again.  Please help to prepare your children (both virtual and in-person) that some things may look a bit different.  Virtual students may be asked to work independently as teachers and students get used to their new environment.  In-person students may be eating lunch in a variety of settings to allow for social distancing and arrival and dismissal may take a bit longer each day.  Again, thank you for your ongoing support and understanding.  As we begin this new phase of the school year, please know that we will no longer be making changes to student schedules.  We have honored every request that we could and at this point, it is time to allow students and teachers to get into some sort of routine and enjoy the last quarter of this school year.  If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me or one of the assistant principals.

If you have a rising kindergarten student or know someone who does, please make sure to fill out this information form and please mark your calendar to attend our virtual kindergarten orientation on May 4th at 7:00 pm.  More details to come later this week.

As we welcome our students back into the building and transition to school in the fall, we are focused on Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) now more than ever! At present, we are interested in moving forward with a better understanding of trauma-informed instruction and building resilience in our students. Therefore, you are cordially invited to the first of what we hope will be many conversations about Building Resilient Communities and Understanding Adverse Childhood Experiences.

The ACE score is the total sum of the different categories of ACEs reported by participants. Study findings show a graded dose-response relationship between ACEs and negative health and well-being outcomes. In other words, as the number of ACEs increases, so does the risk for negative outcomes. For an exhaustive list of outcomes see selected journal publications. (CDC, 2021)

Our pyramid is offering two opportunities for you to participate in this important programming to broaden your understanding of ACEs and their impact on our community: May 4 and May 25. RSVP here so you can be sent the link thirty minutes prior to the start of the presentation.

Peace.

Updated Attendance Information

Please communicate with a member of our school office team if your child will be absent from class virtually or in-person. The MRES website offers ways in which you can communicate an absence from a class and/or for the day.  We appreciate your support with this matter.

If a student who is supposed to be in person, participates virtually instead, you need to notify the office by phone call or email MarshallRoadElem.Attendance@fcps.edu before 10:30 am.  If you do not do this, FCPS will generate an automatic phone call or email to parents letting them know their student was not attending in person.  Please note it can take some time to update codes in SIS before that communication goes out.

If your child is receiving in-person instruction, we encourage outside appointments to be scheduled on the days they are not in the building, when possible.  We want to minimize the loss of instruction.

Candid Pictures for the Yearbook

We want to include candid pictures of our virtual students in the yearbook and would like to invite you to submit pictures of your children doing virtual school at home.  Please upload your photo(s) here by Friday, April 23rd

Yearbook Available for Pre-order Now

The 2020-2021 yearbook will include all students by grade level that have been photographed by Lifetouch during picture days or that have uploaded their photo using this link.  The yearbook is a great way to commemorate this most unusual school year and is available to be purchased on-line for $20.00 per copy.  Use this order form  to pre-order your copy of the MRES yearbook by Friday, April 23rd.

Vision and Hearing Screenings for Virtual Students

Parents of virtual students in kindergarten and 3rd grades or new to the county students in all other grades may schedule a time for their child to be screened by signing up here or may opt-out of the screening by completing and returning this form.  Students who wear glasses or contact lenses should be sure to wear them to the screening.

Coming Soon!  Virtual International “Night,” A Taste of Marshall Road Cookbook, April 19-30

Be on the lookout for information about how you can submit a recipe from your country that highlights your culture or your favorite family recipe.  A link will be sent next week to access a Google Slide where you can share your recipe and pictures.

In addition to the cookbook, this year, students will again be creating paper dolls to showcase their country including cultural clothing, food, flags and greetings.  In-school students will receive paper dolls in class.  Virtual students may stop by the school between 8:45 am - 4:30 pm to pick up their dolls.

Earth Week

Marshall Road will celebrate Earth Week April 19-23.  Think of creative way to spend time outside every day and make observations of the nature around you. Think about how you feel when you are outside.

Here are some ideas for outdoor activities to restore yourself and help restore the earth:

  • Take a walk around your neighborhood or local park and observe the scenery and life around you.
  • Read or write beneath a tree.
  • Use sidewalk chalk to draw what inspires you or makes you feel peaceful.
  • Let nature inspire your drawing, song or other creative outlet.
  • Take a garbage bag on your next jog/walk. Use gloves to pick up any trash you find along the way. Recycle anything you find that can be recycled.
  • Find an activity in the Fairfax County Field Journal to complete outdoors.
  • Project Learning Tree’s 12 Nature Walk Activities for Earth Day

Wear a blue or green T-shirt on Wednesday or Thursday to celebrate our beautiful planet!

10th Annual MRES Runathon!

We have already raised our first $1,000!!!  Way to go Roadrunners!  Our goal this year is to raise $20,000.  Did you know that in past years the Runathon has raised up to $35,000 for the school?!  All money goes directly to the students, teachers, and the school.  In the past these funds have been used for: student technology, S.T.E.M. and cultural arts activities, the sixth-grade graduation ceremony, teacher/staff appreciation, a classroom supply fund for teachers, teacher professional development, and MORE!

Have you registered your student on our *NEW* Runathon website yet?  It’s easy!  Go to https://app.memberhub.gives/mres10thrunathon and click on the Student Registration button.  You will be able to create your own personal fundraising link to share with family and friends, and start collecting donations.  Here’s a helpful fundraising letter your student can use to raise donations.

Finally, we are excited that t-shirts have arrived!!!  Our Runathon t-shirts will be distributed THIS WEEK, along with sidewalk chalk that students will be able to use during Runathon week.  If your student attends class in-person, they will receive their Runathon items while at school.  Virtual families who were unable to pick-up their Runathon items today can stop by the school between 8:45 a.m. - 4:30 pm this week.  Please call the main office at 703-937-1500 and your items will be brought out to you.
