Dear Family Fairfax,

As we commence the last week of April, we look ahead to the end of the 2021 school year--and there is a whirlwind of activities and celebrations planned.  We are looking forward to spring sports, senior events, and our in person students four days a week.  We miss our virtual students, but we know we will be welcoming all of our students back to a new “normal” school year next Fall.  There has been much lost and much gained over the past year.

With prom scheduled for May 15th, we are intentionally keeping it two weeks before graduation on June 1st.  Though there is light at the end of this COVID tunnel, our lives and activities can still be greatly impacted and so still can many high-school traditions.  Please be aware that if your student has to quarantine per the health department, even out of an abundance of caution, s(he) will not be able to participate in school events and activities--this would include graduation.  A negative COVID test during a quarantine will not exempt the student from the health department’s timeline.   I want to remain honest and transparent in the expectations and guidelines, so parents and students can make decisions about activities and events leading up to graduation day.  We all want to see and celebrate our seniors on June 1st!

Your PTSA has been hard at work and remained vigilant for our students and school community over the past year.  Just last Tuesday, there was a learning session with our substance abuse prevention coordinator, De ‘Ja Ruffin (McNeil), and we were reminded of the Fairfax County program “Three to Succeed.”  The research is clear that students who have just three protective factors are significantly less likely to engage in risky or dangerous behavior.  Here is a link to a very short video that explains more:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkXndiuQMe0

Congratulations are in order for Christina Elliott and Leilani Silva who placed 7th and 10th at Girls States Cross Country!  Also, as of my writing this, DECA has three National Series Finalists, Allie Romero, Disha Kiran, and Grace Walters.  Please join me in a roaring applause for these students and all those who are successfully completing a season or competition.  It has certainly been a bumpy road and our scholars and athletes have demonstrated resiliency and perseverance.

This past week, our Student Services department sponsored Wellness Week.  We were reminded of the importance of self care and shown multiple techniques to stay mentally healthy and strong for our students and each other.  Another exciting note--our Student Services department was also awarded RAMP certification!  This is quite an honor:  Learn more about it here

I hope that everyone in our Fairfax Family takes some time to be well and recharge this weekend.

All the best,

Erin

ASCA Awards RAMP Designation to Fairfax HS

ASCA

The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) is pleased to announce Fairfax High School in Fairfax, Virginia as a Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP). This is the fourth time the Fairfax High School Counselors have received this recognition. It is also the highest number of RAMP recognitions received by any school in FCPS.

The RAMP designation lasts for five years and recognizes schools that are committed to delivering an exemplary comprehensive school counseling program. Honorees are awarded for aligning their program with the criteria in the ASCA National Model, a framework for a data-informed school counseling program. The RAMP application is a culmination of a full year’s work and data collection. The application, led by school counselors Tara Johnson and Tiera Sharpe, consists of 12 sections which includes data collected during the previous year, analysis of the data, and narratives explaining all processes.  The entire application process takes about a year and a half. Since the program’s inception, more than 900 schools have earned the RAMP designation. Research findings indicate fully implemented school counseling programs are associated with a range of positive student educational and behavioral outcomes.

“This year’s RAMP honorees have shown their commitment to students and the school counseling profession,” said Jill Cook, ASCA executive director. “These schools used data to drive their program development and implementation so all students can achieve success. The RAMP designation distinguishes these schools and encourages school counselors nationwide to strive for excellence.”

Pre-Sale Online Ticketing for Spring Sports

This spring will be our very first season of using a brand new interface for purchasing tickets for Fairfax HS sporting events (Lacrosse, Soccer and Track) at Harold Stalnaker Stadium, called ETix. ETix will allow our fans to purchase tickets online, prior to any game or meet hosted in the FHS Stadium. To purchase tickets in advance, use this link (or the QR code below) to select the event for which you want tickets, then use your credit card information to purchase the number of tickets you want. You will receive a confirmation email for your purchase, and you will pull up that email on your phone to present to the ticket booth, scanning your ticket. This same procedure will also be used for those who wish to make credit card purchases for tickets at the gate on the day of the event.

We are excited about this opportunity of using this new eTix system, but you still have the option of using cash.

If you have any questions about these procedures, please contact Cathy Horacek at cshoracek@fcps.edu.

Teacher Appreciation Week

Fairfax Families - it's time to show our school how much they mean to us!

Teacher Appreciation Week (May 3-7)

We have decided in lieu of catering meals and inviting parent volunteers (since they are still not permitted into the building), we will bring food trucks to the school!  We've invited breakfast truck on Wednesday to serve before school and a snacks/desserts truck on Friday afternoon so students and staff can all partake after school.

We are really hoping to subsidize all of part of the teachers & staff meals, but to do so means we need generous donations from FHS parents to make this happen!

In addition to the fantastic food trucks, PTSA is providing grab-n-go breakfast and snack items throughout the week.  If you would like to donate any of these items, please see the link below.

If you need drop items off with Kate or Ayla; emails, addresses and instructions are in the second link above.
