Justice Newsletter - April 18

A Note from Principal Eck

Dear Justice Families,

I hope that you are enjoying your weekend.

We are excited to be working on welcoming more students back to four days of in-person instruction at Justice. We’ve had an extremely positive response to our in-person requests. We are working to process all requests by no later than this week. If you haven’t heard from your counselor as to your start date, please contact him/her.

As you may have heard, I will be leaving Justice at the end of the school year.  Region 2 is looking for parents and staff from Justice High to serve on the interview panel. If you are interested in serving on the panel, please see the message below from Region 2 Assistant Superintendent Dr. Fabio Zuluaga.

Also, below is our SOL end of course test schedule as well as opt-out information. If you have any questions, please contact Katie Vandawalker @ kmvandawalke@fcps.edu or Shelley Terry @ sdterry@fcps.edu

Finally, Quarter 3 Report Cards were distributed to all in-person students last week. For all students, report cards are also available in ParentVUE/StudentVUE. For virtual students whose parents have not selected “go paperless” in ParentVUE, report cards will be mailed by no later than this week.

The Pass-No Mark Form is now available in the Main Office, Student Services, and Justice’s Public Website. This form must be submitted in hard copy or via email to the student’s counselor or the Students Services Department. Families are encouraged to consider the option for Pass-No Mark status carefully.

As always, please reach out to me or any member of our admin team with questions.

The Right to Refuse Assessments webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/node/34277) offers important information as you consider this decision. If you believe you may wish to defer or refuse one or more SOL tests this spring, please fill out this Google Form or contact our Assessment Coach, Shelley Terry, at sdterry@fcps.edu.

Last week, we completed optional vision and hearing screenings for all in-person sophomores. Time slots are still available for any virtual students who wish to participate in the screening.

Opt-In Procedures: Virtual students who wish to participate in the screening need to complete the COVID-19 Health Screening Questionnaire and sign up through one of the following links:

Students should bring the COVID-19 Health Screening Questionnaire and glasses/contacts (if applicable) and report to the clinic.

Opt-Out Procedures:  There are three ways to opt your student out of the screening:

  • Indicate your preference online through @wecare.
  • Complete the opt-out form and email it to Ebony High at ephigh1@fcps.edu.
  • Drop off the completed form in the Main Office.

If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Ebony High at ephight1@fcps.edu or (703) 824-3910.

All-State Band

Congratulations to AJ Farkas and Julia Short for auditioning for and making All-State Band! Students from all over the state auditioned for the virtual ensemble and this year there were five students who auditioned from Justice HS. To be eligible to audition for states, students have to earn a spot at the top of their district band. Once they have placed high in districts, students can then go on to audition for states. This is a very intense process.

Class of 2021 Information

Senior Activity - Friday, April 23rd 3-5pm

Outside Door 4 (Side of building facing Peace Valley Lane)

Our Class of 2021 is invited to join their class sponsors on Friday, April 23rd from 3-5pm.  Seniors will have the opportunity to paint a rock that will be added to a recently updated courtyard and new sensory garden created by their fellow Class of 2021 classmate.  Seniors may paint a picture that brings them peace, their initials, and/or a word of positivity, strength, or perseverance.  We will have rocks, brushes, and paint for students to use.  All participants must stay socially distant and wear a mask throughout their time on campus.  In the event of rain we will move indoors to the cafeteria and maintain a minimum of 6’ between participants.  If a senior would prefer to paint a rock at home and bring it in, that is also permitted.  If using this option, seniors should drop the rock off on April 23rd  between 3 and 5pm at door 4 outside.  Rocks should not to exceed 2” x 3”.

If needed, students creating their painting at home may also pick up a rock from the school prior to April 23rd . To arrange for a rock pick-up, please contact class sponsors Alex Parkins (atparkins@fcps.edu) or Sarah McIntosh (smcintosh@fcps.edu) and arrange a pick-up date from our main office between the times of 8am and 3:30pm prior to the 23rd.

Graduation - June 7 at 9:00am (June 8 Rain Date): We are excited to announce that this year’s graduation ceremony will be held on Monday, June 7th at 9:00am at Fairfax High School stadium field! Due to current guidance regarding capacity, students will be issued a limited number of tickets to the ceremony. We will be meeting with the graduation committee and senior class leaders in the near future to begin the planning process and will be sure to keep you posted as we receive additional information.

Senior Dues: Senior dues are now available through myschoolbucks.com and will be $50 this year. Senior dues pay for the cap, gown, diploma, and diploma cover.

2021 End of the Year Events: In addition to graduation, FCPS and Justice High School are committed to holding as many as possible traditional end of the year events. We are currently working through these new guidelines to understand the health and safety requirements and laws for culminating events such as prom, and other end- of-year celebrations. FCPS will promptly notify school staff, students, and parents as soon as they have the additional updates and plans.

Senior t-shirts: Senior shirts may be purchased on MySchoolBucks.com or may be purchased with cash at the school.  Shirts are $15.00. If purchased on MySchoolBucks.com, please email Colleen Lally to let her know what day you are coming by to pick up the shirt.

Senior yard signs are in and available for pick-up!  Virtual and in-person students may come by and pick-up their senior yard sign Monday through Friday, from 8am-3:30pm.  Please email Colleen Lally at clally@fcps.edu or call her at 703-824-3907 to let her know what day you’re coming by and we will have your sign ready in the main office.
