Cardinal's Message

Cardinal's Message

Dear Cunningham Park Families and Friends,

On Tuesday, April 20th, we transition to four days (Tuesday-Friday) of in-person learning for all students currently in-person and certain students identified through specific protocol.  With our in-person students nearly doubling we appreciate your patience during our arrival and dismissal process, especially in Kiss & Ride (K&R).  If you live close enough to Cunningham Park, we encourage students to walk to school for fresh air, exercise, and to alleviate long lines in K&R.  Please be mindful of students walking and our younger Cardinals who are just learning the arrival and dismissal procedures as well.

Our library is putting out an all-call for help hunting down books that were borrowed before school facilities closed last spring. As many of you prepare your children to return to school more frequently next week, please do a deep dive into rooms, under beds, behind car seats, and anywhere you might find some of our books hiding since last March.

As a reminder, students in grades 3-6 will be taking the Standards of Learning (SOL) tests in-person during the month of May.  A revised SOL schedule for Cunningham Park can be found below. All tests must be administered in-person at school. If you have not already done so, please complete this  Google intent form to indicate your decision to either proceed with or refuse participation in SOL tests this year for your child.

And one last calendar note: due to unforeseen circumstances, the live portion of our planned Poetry Slam is being postponed indefinitely.  We will still celebrate the amazing poets who have made submissions to our flip grid.

Things are certainly hopping, and we have been happy to see so many of you at our recent parent coffees.  It will be awesome to have so many Cardinals back together next week, as we love our learners - whether in-person or virtual!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Katie Le, Principal and Jon Kemmerer, Assistant Principal

P2 Focus Next Week: Fairness

By Dr. Keri Mina, CPES Technology Coach

People with this trait believe that all people have value.  They approach situations with an unbiased mindset & treat everyone with respect.  People that are strong in this trait also believe that no one should be discriminated against for any reason.  This trait can help us become trustworthy friends, responsible citizens and generally moral people. The trait of fairness can also strengthen the aptitude for self-reflection, self-awareness and self-confidence.

Our digital citizenship connection to fairness is: We are kind & courageous.  When we see someone interacting online inappropriately, we need to make sure we tell a trusted adult so everyone is treated with respect.

Try this at home:  Talk about fairness and the difference between something being fair and unfair.  Give your family the scenarios listed below and talk about whether each one is fair or unfair and why.

  • Your older sister gets to stay up later than you.
  • Your brother got money for his birthday and you didn’t.
  • Your friend brings her ball to school but won’t let you play with it.
  • Nick always gets to be the line leader.
  • You save a seat for someone in the cafeteria.
  • Your friend lets you cut in line in front of him at the drinking fountain.

Quote of the week:  “It is not fair to ask of others what you are not willing to do yourself.” -Eleanor Roosevelt
