Plan Ahead: 2021-22 Standard School Year Calendar
This week we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week. We invite you to think of a simple way to thank you child's teacher, special education teacher, ESOL teacher, specialists, or any other staff member at Cardinal Forest who has influenced your child this year. Please view the PTA newsletter if you would like to participate in the letter writing campaign or other appreciation throughout the week.
As we approach the end of the year, Mr. Hirsch, the staff and I are looking forward to our summer program. Families will be notified if students are being invited to attend. Unfortunately, we cannot extend an invitation to all of our students. All students will have the opportunity to receive practice packets electronically or a paper copy this summer.
Input on class placements for next year can be sent as an email to Ms. Drake via email at fmdrake@fcps.edu. Mr. Hirsch and I ask that families do not request specific teachers. Please feel free to inform us of learning styles and interests that will help us match your student for the 2021-22 school year. We ask the information be sent by May 21st. Class placements will be finalized in August.
Thank you for all you do to create a caring culture at Cardinal Forest.
Felicia Drake and Keith Hirsch
Students in grades 3-6 will be taking the Virginia SOL Assessments. Thank you to those of you who have taken a moment to fill out the Google form indicating if you are having your student take the Spring SOL's or if you are filling out the parent refusal form. Due to the pandemic, no penalty will be held against students whose parents have refused the SOL this year. Please take note of the schedule below and make sure not to schedule appointments during your student's test days.
Multilingual Family Podcasts: What Should Families Know About ESOL Services?
Listen to the latest Spanish, Arabic, and Korean podcasts on why FCPS families should know about English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) services. Nearly 49% percent, or 87,571 students, in Fairfax County Public Schools speak a second language. This week's podcasts include a discussion about FCPS English Language Services. Rich Pollio, director of FCPS ESOL Services, talks about why ESOL services are important, how families are notified about ESOL services, how families can help at home, new school to home communication tools, and adult English Language Classes.

Dear Parents/Guardians,
We need your help in projecting the Kindergarten enrollment for the 2021-2022 school year. Virginia Law, section 22.1-254, requires that children who will reach their fifth birthday on or before September 30, 2021, must be enrolled in Kindergarten for the 2021-2022 school year unless the parent or guardian notifies the school in writing that they do not wish the child to attend school until the following year.
If you have a child who will be five years old on or before September 30, 2021, please complete this form and return it to the school office.
If any of your neighbors have children who will be eligible for Kindergarten, please share this information with them, as we are especially interested in reaching those Floris families who do not have children currently attending our school.
Please email the completed form and any questions to Karen Stephens, Registrar, at kdstephens@fcps.edu

West Springfield has just announced it’s Girls Basketball camp dates: July 26 thru July 30th, for rising 3rd thru 9th graders. For more information contact Coach Gibson at: wrgibson@fcps.edu .
We are getting a coed team together for Springfield to join the Northern Virginia School Hockey League. The target age group for this team is 6th -8th graders as of fall 2021.
There are currently no affiliated teams with FCPS at Middle and High Schools, and the intention is this fills that void.
The commitment is only for 1 day per week (mostly Friday evenings), for 10 games in the fall of 2021. Price will be determined on how many players we have.
Please reach out to springfieldnvshl@gmail.com if you’re interested or with any questions or visit http://nvshl.org/ for more information about the league.
Teacher Appreciation Week
It’s hard believe that we are so close to the end of this unique school year. Teacher Appreciation Week is May 3-7 and the PTA is working hard to find ways to thank our amazing teachers for all the hard work this year.
You are more than welcome to act on your own and send your teacher a letter, a note, a drawing, or a small gift. Gift Cards can either be emailed or mailed to the school, just make sure to include C/O so it gets to the teacher.
Teacher’s likes can be found at:
https://cardinalforest.ptboard.com/school/cm?mid=2675
Would you rather show your appreciation by writing a letter or drawing a picture?
To show your appreciation please encourage your student to write a personal letter to their teachers as a part of a letter-writing campaign. It can be an email you can mail it to the school, or dropped off in the bin marked letters and signs that will be in front of the school Friday April 30 to May 2.
Cardinal Forest Elementary
C/O Your teachers name
8600 Forrester Blvd.
Springfield, VA 22152
Last, but not least, we would like to ask you all to create positive signs/posters for your child’s teachers as we plan to decorate the gym (currently the teacher’s lounge) with them. There will be a bin in front of the school as we will get closer to the Teacher Appreciation Week for the sign/poster collection.
Don’t forget to thank all of our teachers, specials, special education, and our IA’s. Just a simple note or thanks you poster is great!!
Items may be dropped off at the school between Friday April 30 and May 2.
If you have any questions please contact CardinalForestPTA@gmail.com
Thank you for helping us make this Teacher Appreciation Week Special for our hardworking staff at Cardinal Forest Elementary!
