Dear Lanier Community,

Fairfax Pyramid Schools have a proud partnership of supporting each other, including our staff and students. We work together to provide strong transitions, community partnerships, and opportunities for our pyramid colleagues to grow and develop their own talents. We are excited to announce such an opportunity with a staff change for the remainder of the school year. Beginning April 20, 2021, Ms. Beth Levy (Eagle View ES) will join the Lanier Middle School team as an Interim Assistant Principal.  Eagle View proudly welcomes Ms. Jenn Gray, the Region 5 ESOL Resource Teacher Specialist, as Interim Assistant Principal. We are confident that both of these professionals will bring wonderful ideas to both communities during this time.

Parents, our amazing PTA needs your support. Next year, our current board members have all made commitments to various other philanthropic boards for the fall. We are in need of nominations for President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer from the floor at the May 18th meeting that will occur virtually at 7 PM. If we do not secure board positions, our PTA will have to dissolve. We realize some wonderings you may have:

  • Many of you join us from seven years of experience in elementary schools. What is the time commitment for a middle school PTA?
  • We also know that middle school students often tell parents that middle school is the time to step away and let them have their own independent experiences. How will my child feel about my involvement?
  • Finally, we know that many of you will become very active with boosters in high school for athletics and other groups. Isn’t this a time for us to step back and regroup before high school?

However, please know: We need you to stay involved in middle school! Our current board members can speak to you personally to let you know about the time requirements and ways you will support the PTA. Please email our current president, Jenn Wright, for more information: lanierptapresident@gmail.com

Have a great weekend full of sunshine, smiles, and time outdoors!

Stay safe,

Tammy Hanna

RELIGIOUS OBSERVATIONS

If your student can not test on one of the assigned dates or times and want to take the SOL, please call 703-934-2400 and ask for Michele Johnson to make alternative arrangements.

 MATERIALS

Students will need to bring their FCPS issued computer and charger, a pencil, and a book to read should they finish early.

*Students learning from the building have been updating their computers each week.  If your student has been learning from home or using their personal computer, we recommend restarting their laptop on an FCPS school site.

SAFETY& TESTING LOCATIONS

We created our testing groups using the A-K and L-Z break down to reduce the number of students in each classroom.  We are following the CDC and FCPS guidelines and layered prevention strategies during testing.

We have assigned staff in every hallway to help students find their testing locations.

Your child will receive an email with their testing location the week of April 26th.  They can also ask their 4th-period teacher for testing location information starting that week.

BREAKFAST & SNACKS

Our café is working to offer pick-up breakfast in the AM and snacks in the PM before each testing session.

 TRANSPORTATION

The FCPS Transportation Department will send you the bus stop location and time if you are in a bus zone.  Our experience has been that the communication will come a few days before the test.

 VERIFIED MATH CREDIT

If your child was enrolled in and passed Algebra, Algebra Honors, or Geometry last year, the state has assigned the Verified credit needed for the Advanced Diploma.  For more information regarding high school graduation requirements, visit the FCPS website.

Are you taking one of the Virginia Remote Student Progress Tests (VRSPT)?

Look for an email from Lanier as we learn more about the VRSPT from FCPS and the state of Virginia.

Here Comes the Bus Mobile App

As a result of the Transportation Services' strategic plan, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has made available a Here Comes the Bus® mobile app. Know when your bus is approaching your stop!  Here Comes the Bus® app is a school bus tracking app that can simplify morning and afternoon routines for parents and students by giving them real-time bus location and text or email notification alerts, helping them get to the bus stop on time. Here Comes the Bus® utilizes our GPS data and an easy to use customizable map that works on one or multiple devices, such as a tablet or smartphone.

Using the app is EASY!  You will need the FCPS school district code 28982 and a SIS Parent Account (contact your child's school if you do not have an SIS Parent  Account).  Please be sure to follow the detailed instructions here to set up your account.

From a smartphone or tablet, download (for free) the Here Comes the Bus® app from the App Store or Google Play.

Attendance Items

  • Please remember to inform the school if your student is going to be virtual on an in-person day.  It is important that we know why they are learning from home so their attendance can be noted correctly.  Please use the attendance form or call the attendance line at 703-934-2424.
  • If a student needs to miss any class time at all, be it one period or a full day, parents or guardians should always report the specific details of the absence to the LMS attendance line or form.
  • Teachers do not have access to mark a student excused for an absence, which is why it is important that parents notify the school in addition to the teacher so your child's attendance record is marked correctly.
