A Message from the Principal

Dear Ravensworth Families,

We recently announced that beginning April 27th all students currently attending in person will be expanded to 4 days of in person instruction.  We were able to accomplish this by designing and implementing a second cafeteria and additional eating locations to safely accommodate the eating of breakfast and lunch at the required 6 feet distance.  We also redesigned several classroom layouts to ensure students are socially distanced at 3 feet.

A big shout goes to our staff and custodial teams as they spend this next week and a half redesigning classrooms, learning spaces and instructional practices to safely accommodate the increased capacity. For our virtual students and families, you can continue to expect high levels of engagement and learning within your classroom community.

This school year has been filled with many challenges and changes and through it all, we want to thank you for being our partners.

We are #RavensWorth!

Sincerely,

Erika Aspuria

Principal

Meal Kit Sites Moving to Monday Distribution Starting April 19

Many FCPS Grab and Go food distribution sites have switched this month from daily food pickup to weekly Fairfax Meal Kit distribution. Fairfax Meal Kits contain seven days of breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack, and supper items packed in bulk.

On Monday, April 19, all meal kit sites are permanently moving to a Monday distribution day. Hours remain 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or until supplies are exhausted. Grab and Go locations and bus routes remain the same. Go to the food distribution webpage for more information.

Kiss and Ride

As a reminder, if you are using Kiss & Ride for arrival and/or departure of your child, please review the Kiss and Ride expectations below:

Ravensworth Kiss and Ride Procedures

  • Arrival – We will begin to let students out of their cars at 8:45 a.m.
  • Dismissal - Parents can begin entering the Kiss and Ride loop at 3:15 and students will be released at 3:30.
  • Kiss and Ride moves in a clockwise pattern on the streets around Ravensworth ES.
  • Please approach Gosport Lane from Queensberry Avenue or Moultrie Road
  • Proceed on Nutting Drive, passing the bus lane/entrance, and drive to the Kiss & Ride entrance towards the end of the school
  • Drive through Kiss & Ride and exit only to the right onto Nutting Drive.
  • Once in the Kiss and Ride lane, please prominently display the placard with your child’s/children’s number.
  • Placards will be provided to parents during the first week of in-person learning based on responses to the Kiss and Ride survey sent out through the Ravens’ Nest.
  • Please do not exit your vehicle while in Kiss and Ride.
  • Please do not pass other cars in Kiss and Ride unless directed by a staff member.
  • If your child is not ready or has not arrived at Kiss and Ride. you may be asked to pull up to the front of the queue or go around
  • We hope to quicken your drop-off & pickup times and decrease the inconveniences to our neighbors on Nutting Drive.

Under no circumstance is a U-Turn permitted in the middle of the street on Nutting Drive in front of Ravensworth ES for the safety of all of our students.

Also, please use the crosswalks instead of walking in the middle of Nutting Drive. There are crosswalks at the corners of Nutting Drive/Gosport Lane and Nutting Drive/Ellet Road for you to safely use and show your children how to use.

March 9th Picture Day Pictures are here!

Pictures have arrived in the school office from Lifetouch photos taken on March 9th.  We also still have photos remaining from our earlier picture days.  Please stop by the office and ask for your child’s photos.

Positivity Project Trait for the Week of April 12: Fairness

Fairness means you believe that all people have value. You approach situations with an unbiased mindset and treat everyone with respect. Fairness combines both the head and the heart. It is the product of moral judgment – the process by which people determine what is morally right and what is morally wrong. Moral reasoning has been explored and analyzed in two main traditions: the justice reasoning approach and the care reasoning approach.

Justice reasoning emphasizes the use of reason and logic. In justice reasoning, fairness is determined by objectively weighing what is right or wrong, as determined by a group, society, or universal ethical principles. Care reasoning, by contrast, emphasizes care and compassion. This approach uses concepts like empathy – and understanding and accounting for the needs, interests, and well-being of another person – when making moral decisions.

Although the two approaches are different, most people use a blend of justice and care reasoning — a combination of their head and their heart — when making choices related to fairness.

Next Week’s Character Strength:  Appreciation of Beauty and Elegance

April Is Month of the Military Child; Purple Up Day Is April 21

April is the Month of the Military Child!  It’s the perfect time to recognize children from military families for the sacrifices they make living the military lifestyle.  Over 10% of our Ravens are Military Connected Youth.  Let’s celebrate them by wearing purple on Wednesday, April 21 for Purple Up Day!

Updated Sick Student Procedures

FCPS, under the guidance of the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD), has updated the procedures for students returning to school after an absence. These updates went into effect on Monday, April 5th:

When a student remains home from in-person instruction due to COVID-Like Illness (CLI), the parent/guardian will NO LONGER need to provide the Sick Student Notification and Permission to Return to School/Child Care Form.

The Sick Student Notification and Permission to Return to School/Child Care Form will continue to be required for the following situations and must be completed prior to the students return to in-person instruction:

  • Sent home due to COVID Like Illness (CLI)
  • Reports a positive COVID-19 test
  • Is instructed to quarantine by a medical provider or the FCHD

Additional acceptable documentation for student return to in-person following illness:

  • A health care practitioner note is also acceptable. The note is to be attached to the Return to School Form/Child Care and placed in the student’s cum folder.
  • If the student is returning from quarantine or isolation and has been under the advisement of the FCHD, a copy of the SARA alert form is also acceptable.

The forms and translations are located at http://fcpsnet.fcps.edu/ssse/healthinfo/index.shtml under “Forms and Letters.”

We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we navigate these continually-changing guidelines.
