In April, people all over the United States celebrate Arab American Heritage Month. Students deserve meaningful, sustained opportunities to learn about the diverse perspectives, experiences, and contributions of Arab Americans year-round, and Arab American Heritage Month is one opportunity to honor these important stories. Below are some books from Oak Hill's library that your child(ren) could check out to learn more about Arab American Heritage.

Our third SLLM day will be this Friday, April 23rd and the theme is, “Let’s Breathe.” In our social emotional learning (SEL) groups this year, we learned that if you’re feeling strong emotions, it is helpful to stop what you’re doing and take some deep breathes. Breathing calms your amygdala and allows your prefrontal cortex to think before you react. Students and staff are encouraged to wear comfy clothes as we highlight the importance of deep breathing as a self-regulation tool. As a reminder, the Wolf Pack Relaxation Room (WPRR) is a great place to visit to practice deep breathing and other coping strategies. Students are able to access the WPRR room from their homeroom google classrooms. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Oak Hill clinical team with any questions. Thank you for your support!

In addition to the AAP level IV Program, Fairfax County offers a continuum of services to meet children’s academic needs. Differentiated lessons (Level II) and Part-Time Advanced Academic Programs (Level III) are also available for students through a school screening process. To learn more about these levels of service please visit the AAP website found here.
Screening for school-based services (Levels II-III) can happen at any time during the school year but is done schoolwide in spring to determine services for the next school year. Multiple criteria are used to screen students for all levels of AAP services. Parents or guardians may initiate the screening for school-based (level II and III) services by submitting the Referral Form to the AART, Cathy Lahr, at cclahr1@fcps.edu by May 3, 2021.

In order to ensure that we have the right number of staff in place to greet our returning students in August, we request that you fill out this simple survey indicating your child's intention to return to Oak Hill next year. Please fill it out for each child attending Oak Hill by May 21, 2021. If you indicate that you will not be returning, our registrar, Katherine Dillard, will reach out via email for more information. Please contact Ms. Dillard with questions at kjdillard1@fcps.edu.

All students taking the SOL should have the opportunity to practice using the TestNav test delivery app so they are familiar with navigating the app and using all of the Technology Enhanced tools. Directions for opening the Practice Test Items are in this PDF. If you are unable to get the TestNav app to open you will need to come to the school property, connect to the school wifi and reboot the student laptop three times, allowing all updates to download and install. Additional information regarding the practice tests can be found on the Virginia Department of Education website.
