From the Principal’s Desk
Dear Cub Run Families,
The start of the 4th quarter has been a busy time for Cub Run students, families and staff! Our in-person Cubbies have settled in and are doing an incredible job with following new protocols while learning and having fun. Our virtual Cubbies continue to do amazing things with their virtual and in-person peers in the concurrent setting. We are so proud of all of them!
We wish all of our Muslim families and staff members Ramadan Mubarak, as the holy month of fasting began on April 12th. For our Muslim students who are fasting, our Equity Team has volunteered to supervise the children in the library during their lunchtimes.
Here are some books about Ramadan that you might share as a family:
 |
|
Lailah’s Lunchbox On the first year she is able to participate in Ramadan, Lailah finds herself in a new country, far from her native Abu Dhabi. She is excited to fast, but nervous that her classmates will not understand. With the help of a teacher and a librarian, she learns how she can explain Ramadan to her fellow students and make friends who are respectful of her culture. |
Night of the Moon: A Muslim Holiday Story by Hena Khan and illustrated by Julie Paschkis -This vibrantly illustrated story invites children to experience the traditions of the month through the eyes of a seven-year-old Pakistani-American girl named Yasmeen, who watches every night as the moon grows and shrinks and finally disappears. |
|
 |
April is also National Arab Heritage Month! Check out these books that feature Arab American characters.
 |
|
With stunning illustrations by Kenard Pak and thoughtful representation of a modern Arab American family from Cathy Camper, Ten Ways to Hear Snow is a layered exploration of mindfulness, empathy, and what we realize when the world gets quiet. |
|
In Big Red Lollipop by Rukhsana Khan and illustrated by Sophie Blackall, Delving deep into Arab American children’s experiences and school culture, this book, written by Pakistani-Canadian author Rukhsana Khan, focuses on a young girl, Rubina, who, on her first visit to a birthday party, is forced to bring her young sister – a very Arab familial dynamic - along, which ends up isolating her from her friends. The book is also an exploration of sisterhood and the Arab family.

SOL Testing Information and Intent Form
Across Virginia, students will be taking ‘Standards of Learning’ tests (SOLs) this spring. Federal and state education departments have decided not to cancel this year’s assessments. In Fairfax County Public Schools, testing for grades 3-6 will be scheduled between April 26 and June 4, 2021. Cub Run’s SOL testing schedule is as follows:
- Reading Test, All Grades
- In-person Tuesday/Wednesday students: Tuesday, May 11
- In-Person Tuesday-Friday students: Tuesday, May 11
- In-person Thursday/Friday students: Thursday, May 13
- Fully virtual students: Monday, May 17
- Math Test, All Grades
- In-person Tuesday/Wednesday students: Tuesday, May 18
- In-Person Tuesday-Friday students: Tuesday, May 18
- In-person Thursday/Friday students: Thursday, May 20
- Fully virtual students: Monday, May 24
- Science Test, Grade 5 only
- In-person Tuesday/Wednesday students: Tuesday, May 4
- In-Person Tuesday-Friday students: Tuesday, May 4
- In-person Thursday/Friday students: Thursday, May 6
- Fully virtual students: Monday, May 10
All SOL tests must be taken in-person at school. If your child is currently attending school in-person, testing will be scheduled on days when they are already in the building. Students who are attending school fully virtually, can come in to test on Mondays (per the schedule above). Bus transportation can be arranged, if needed.
For any SOL assessments this spring, parents/guardians have the right to refuse testing for their child(ren). The Right to Refuse Assessments webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/node/34277) offers information and considerations as you make this decision. If you choose to refuse the grade 3-6 SOL reading or mathematics test for your child, you will have the opportunity for them to complete an alternative, non-SOL test at home. However, please note that this test is not required. The ‘Virginia Remote Student Progress Monitoring Test’ will provide information about strengths and areas for growth in grade level content standards. More information about this option will be provided as soon as it is available.
As we prepare for spring assessments, we need to collect information about your intentions for your child’s participation in the SOLs, as all tests must be completed in-person at Cub Run. We are asking that ALL parents/guardians of all 3rd-6th Graders, please complete the following form by Friday, 4/23: https://forms.gle/2PXNK7gMjFcMSfis5 Please complete the form once for each child in 3rd-6th Grade. Even if you’ve already conveyed a ‘refusal to test’ to the school for your child, we ask that you still complete this form to ensure that we have a concise accounting of everyone’s intention. This information will also help us in our logistical planning for administering the tests – including transportation, which is available to students who are remaining fully virtual and only provided on Mondays. Please contact the main office (703-633-7500) if you need help accessing or completing the form.
All testing will begin in the morning. We know that some of our students are fasting in honor of Ramadan this month. If you have any questions or concerns about your child testing during Ramadan, please reach out to our School Testing Coordinators Shelia Sobeski (sdsobeski@fcps.edu) or Jonathan Magwire (jmmagwire@fcps.edu).

April 20 Community Webinar on COVID-19 Vaccines
The FCPS Parent Resource Center will be hosting multilingual community webinars on COVID-19 vaccines and the vaccine process on Tuesday, April 20. Learn more and register for the webinar.
April Is School Library Month
With the help of our fantastic school librarians, FCPS students checked out more than 4.2 million books this school year, and accessed 534,102 ebooks and online audiobooks! School librarians keep equity at the center by working with every student and connecting with teachers to build information literacy skills, spark students’ curiosity through inquiry, and provide resources that support students’ academic and personal growth.
Cub Run’s librarian, Mr. Timpson, has done an amazing job in getting books into the hands and onto the screens of our Cubbies this year! We appreciate his contributions to the Cub Run community!
PTA Auction- Bidding ends soon!
Kudos to the PTA for moving the auction to a virtual setting! They’ve already exceeded their initial goal! There is still time to bid on a variety of items (check them out here!) The event proceeds go a long way toward funding activities for our students. All bidding ends today at 5:00PM. https://www.32auctions.com/organizations/74808/auctions/92305?r=1&t=all

This can include pictures of kids/teachers/staff online, kids being kids, virtual Spirit week activities, kids reading, kids playing outside, birthday parades, family fun time, and any other fun activities! Not all pictures will be used, but all submissions are greatly appreciated!
