Terra Centre Updates 4-9-21

Terra Centre Families,

We hope you all had a beautiful break!  The students returned refreshed and ready to learn. The weather has been perfect, and some classes have been able to take advantage of these beautiful days even having lunch outside!

FCPS is working hard to keep our students safe and healthy during this worldwide pandemic that has been with us for over a year. You might be interested to know that, like all schools, Terra Centre is audited weekly by an FCPS Safety Team.  The team inspects the school to make sure we are continuing the COVID protocols in all areas.  Inside the buildings they check for properly arranged classrooms; sign in/out sheets; masks, distancing, and handwashing; as well as additional specific checkpoints on campus. They even move onto the playground to check that students are socially distanced and not sharing equipment.  Every week they offer a report.  Terra Centre always receives a positive report!  Your teachers and staff have been steadfast in maintaining a clean and safe environment for the students.  Most importantly, the students have been cooperative and willing to work hard to keep us all healthy.  Thank you for your support at home. It has made a difference.

April seems to be the month of many activities. Check out the fliers below for all the details!

  • Book Fair begins April 12 - 23
  • Picture Days: April 13, 14, 15
  • Purple Up Days: April 13, 16
  • Bingo Night: April 13 – 6:00 p.m.
  • PTA Sponsored Clubs in April: Tiny Chefs, Code Ninjas, and Chess Club (scroll down for details)

Just a note to let you know how appreciative we are of your continuing support as we move through this ever-changing year together.  The teachers and staff at Terra Centre see that the effort you put forth is reflected in the children you send to school, virtually and in person.  We are learning together.  Thank you, again.

TC Tigers on Fox 5!

Check out TC Tiger Kate Detrick and her younger sister Ryan as they give a weather forecast!  It started out as a weather forecast Flipgrid assignment.  They had so much fun with it that they wanted to share it on Twitter with their favorite local meteorologist, Fox 5’s Sue Palka.  The video had numerous views, and the family was contacted by Fox 5 to give a brief interview.  Check out the video with one of the links below!  Way to go Kate and Ryan!

Purple Up

We are inviting everyone to

"Purple-Up!"

Tuesday, April 13th and Friday, April 16th

This is an annual campaign created four years ago by Operation Military Kids (OMK).  The entire month of April is nationally known as Month of the Military Child. During this month, OMK sponsors events to encourage community awareness and support of the military children. "Purple-Up" is an event that encourages communities to wear purple on a designated day in April. At TC, we will have two days so all students, virtual and in-person, can participate at school, if possible. OMK chose purple because it is the color that symbolizes all branches of the military, as it is the combination of Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue, Marine red and Navy blue. It also includes Active Duty, Reserve, National Guard and Veterans.

Heart Flag

In support of our TC military students, we will celebrate “Purple Up” on Tuesday, April 13th and Friday, April 16th as our Days of the Military Child. We are asking for everyone in the Terra Centre community to wear purple.

Thank you!

Book Fair Time

Spring Book Fair is April 12-23, 2021

This book fair will be like none we’ve ever had before!  Unlike the fall’s online-only fair, this time Ms. Petruzzellis will have books in the library, which allows you to get your books quicker AND not have to pay for shipping.  All books purchases benefit our school library!

Click here:  Terra Centre Book Fair

  • Contactless Checkout: With Book Fair eWallet, a convenient digital payment account, you will shop the Fair cash-free. And now grandparents, friends, and others can contribute to the eWallet to help build your home library!  Due to the pandemic, we will not be accepting cash payments.
  • *NEW* Hand Delivery from the Library: Instead of students coming into the library to select books, Ms. Petruzzellis will bag and deliver purchased books directly to the classroom (if in-person) or set up a curbside pickup appointment (if virtual).  Choosing this option eliminates any delivery fees, allows you to receive your books more quickly, and provides a higher percentage of profit to give back even more books to the TCES library!  More logistical and ordering info will follow.
  • Shop Online & Ship to Home: Experience the Book Fair fun by visiting our Book Fair online! You can shop over 6,000 products — and all orders ship direct to your home (with free shipping on book-only orders over $25*)!   Purchases must be made April 7-20 will count toward our fair totals.

Library to Go

Library Curbside Pickup Updates

As we prepare and host the upcoming book fair, we’re taking a break from our normal library curbside pickup!  The last three curbside book pickups for the year will be on the following Mondays:  April 26, May 10, and May 24.  The final curbside date of June 7 will be for book returns only.  All curbside pickup and return opportunities will be from 2-4pm in the Kiss and Ride lane by door #7.

Standards of Learning (SOL) Tests Will Be Delivered In-Person This Spring

Across Virginia, students will be taking SOL tests in-person this spring. Federal and state education departments have decided that SOL assessments will proceed as usual for reading, mathematics, and science. More information is available about SOL assessments at each grade level. For students attending school 100% virtually, school staff will work with families to schedule an appointment for in-person SOL testing.

Caregivers have the right to refuse SOL assessments if they have concerns about participation related to the pandemic, including health, social-emotional, and instructional time concerns. For questions about SOL testing or to refuse testing, contact your student’s school. A remote non-SOL test option is in development, and information will be provided for families of qualifying students in the coming weeks.
