The Forestville PTA would like to feature our teachers and staff in the Cardinal Spotlight and want to thank them for all that they do. This week we will feature Mr. Ignacio and Ms. Stoner. Be on the lookout for more Cardinal Spotlights in future newsletters.

April 12: School Picture Day
April 19: Kindergarten Orientation
On Monday (4/5), Dr. Braband shared more information regarding in-person learning, including the updated CDC guidance which will allow schools the opportunity to transition from six feet to three feet social distancing, when available and appropriate within health protocols.
We are committed to bringing back as many students to four days of instruction as our capacity restraints allow, beginning with students that have been identified by our school staff through the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) process and then looking at the possibility of additional days for those students who are currently attending two days a week.
Please be aware that while our schools intend to bring back as many students as possible, it will not be possible to offer this opportunity to everyone who wants to be in schools four days a week.
Given this information, we will:
- Assess each class’ capacity for adding additional students.
- Invite students via our Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) process to attend four days per week.
- Determine how many additional “seats” are in each classroom.
- Contact impacted families.
Additionally, please remember that we are looking at the "opportunity" to get as many students in the building for four days of in-person instruction as we can. If your child is already in the building for two days and you filled out the form that was sent out for the April 20th phase, please remember that things depend on capacity within classrooms, staffing and health protocols. It is not an automatic guarantee that all families who requested four days of in-person instruction will receive four days. School personnel will contact impacted families.
We thank you in advance for you support and patience as we work through this process.

We are taking registrations for students who will be in Kindergarten during the 2021-2022 school year. Additionally, we are also taking registrations for new to Forestville students and those who may be returning back to Forestville for the 2021-22 school year. In order to register your child for the 2021-2022 school year, parents will need to complete the registration forms, provide the original birth certificate, a copy of their deed or lease with their name on it as proof of residency, and provide the Virginia School Entrance Health Form, completed and signed by a U.S. physician. The physical must be dated within twelve months of the projected school start date of August 23, 2021.
Here at Forestville, we will be hosting a Kindergarten Orientation for our Forestville families. The orientation is for children who will be 5 years old by September 30, 2021. The orientation will give you the opportunity to virtually meet our K team and other Forestville staff members, learn about our K program, see what a day in the life of a kindergartener looks like and provide you with a Q&A session to answer any questions you may have. In order to access the virtual orientation, a link will be sent out to you by email for you to join in the session, so please get registered so that you can have access to that link. Please be on the lookout for that email in the near future.
Here are the details for the orientation:

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in grades K-8. Learning experiences are designed to develop higher-level thinking through enrichment, acceleration, and extensions of the Program of Studies (POS). Teachers, administrators, and advanced academic resource teachers (AARTs) work together to provide the following levels of school-based services in each elementary school:
- Critical and Creative Thinking Lessons, Grades K-6 (Level I)
All students in kindergarten through grade six receive level I services which consist of model lessons that are designed to teach critical and creative thinking skills. The lessons are modeled in all classrooms by AARTs and the thinking strategies are then used throughout the year by classroom teachers and other teachers who work with students. Student responses to these model lessons are used as part of the identification process for AAP services. Parents may also practice the thinking strategies during family conversations and activities. A description of the nine critical and creative thinking strategies can be found at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics-k-6/advanced-academics/critical-and-creative-thinking
- Differentiated Lessons in Areas of Academic Strength, Grades K-6 (Level II)
The AART collaborates with classroom teachers to provide additional challenge through lessons and resources that extend and enrich the POS. Level II services are part of a talent development pool. Students are rescreened annually to make decisions about the need for this level of service.
- Part-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-6 (Level III)
Students identified by a local school screening committee for part-time advanced academic services are challenged through models and strategies designed to extend and enrich the POS in the four core subject areas. Students receive direct instruction from the AART at the local school using curriculum from the AAP Curriculum and Resources to Support the Differentiated Framework. Students identified for Level III services continue to receive level III services through grade 6.
Screening for school-based services can happen at any time during the school year but is done schoolwide in spring to determine services for the next school year. Multiple criteria are used to screen students for all levels of AAP services. Parents or guardians may initiate the screening for school-based (level III) services by submitting the AAP School-Based Services (Level II-III) Referral Form available at https://www.fcps.edu/registration/advanced-academics-identification-and-placement/elementary-school/current-fcps at the bottom of the page in Forms to the AART Shana Twitchell.
All forms are due by April 30, 2021.
If you have any questions, please contact Shana Twitchell srtwitchell@fcps.edu.
Virginia Law requires that all students entering seventh grade receive a booster dose of the Tdap vaccine prior to the beginning of school. The Tdap vaccine protects against tetanus (lockjaw), diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough) and is usually given around the age of eleven.
For your child to begin 7th grade you will need to submit one of the following documents before the first day of school. It is recommended that all paperwork be submitted to the school office by July 31, 2021.
Acceptable documentation can be one of the following:
- A copy of your child’s immunization record showing the Tdap vaccine.
- A note on a healthcare provider’s letterhead stating the date the Tdap vaccine was given.
- A healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption.
- A notarized Religious Exemption Form which is available online at:
http://www.doe.virginia.gov/support/health_medical/certificate_religious_exemption.pdf
The Tdap booster is available from your child’s healthcare provider or the Fairfax County Health Department. The Health Department Clinic locations and hours are available online at: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/health/clinics or by calling 703-246-2411. Please note that students receiving immunizations at the Health Department must be accompanied by an adult and should bring their immunization records with them.
Seventh grade students will not be allowed to begin school in August 2021 without submitting proper documentation.
Allergy season has arrived. If your child suffers from seasonal allergies, parents must provide/update their child’s Health Information Form and send to Ms. Choudhary at ztchoudhary1@fcps.edu. Several of the COVID-19 symptoms are also seasonal allergy symptoms and identifying your child’s known seasonal allergy symptoms will help us ensure the continued health and wellness of our students and staff. If your child displays any unexplained or unidentified symptoms listed here, your child will be sent to the Care Room and will be sent home. It will be your responsibility to contact your pediatrician to complete a Sick Student Notification form prior to their reentry back into the building.
Thank you for your diligent screening of your child each morning to ensure they are 100% well before sending them to school. If they are not well, please keep them virtual for the safety of their classmates and our staff members.
