Assistant Principal, Chris Musgnug, chats with students on bowtie Wednesdays!

A message from Principal, Amy Miller:

Dear Kilmer Families,

We hope everyone enjoyed the Spring Break! We are starting the fourth quarter strong with our eighth graders engaging in a virtual Finance Park experience in which they participate in career exploration and financial planning. Our theatre students were working on casting their own movies and creating trailers and in engineering students were using the Sketchup for Schools program to create three dimensional shapes.

This past Wednesday, we held an SOL Information Session. This past Wednesday, we held an SOL Information Session. The session was recorded and can be found here. If you have any questions in regard to the SOL please contact our School Testing Coordinator, Emily Pyatt-Openshaw at egpyattopens@fcps.edu or your child’s school counselor.

Sincerely,

Amy Miller, Principal

Ramadan Observance

Students who are observing Ramadan may go to the library during lunch period.

Kilmer Modular

We are excited to share that Kilmer MS will be getting a modular to replace the quad structures we currently have behind our school. The modular will have ten classrooms and bathrooms. The projected completion date of this project is December 2021. Initial preparations are beginning which include placing quads on the tennis courts. These quads will be used from September 2021-December 2021 while the modular is being built. Once the modular is complete the quads from the tennis courts will be removed.

Month of the Military Child

April is the Month of the Military Child, a time to recognize and thank children from military families for their contributions and sacrifices. The nationwide commemoration was established in 1986 by former Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger. To show our support, we are inviting all Fairfax County students, families, school employees, and community members to "Purple Up!" on April 21 for military children. We extend our appreciation for the service of all children from military families and celebrate them by wearing purple in an effort to say “Thank You.”

SOL Testing Information

Federal and State Education Departments have not canceled this year’s assessments. Given this, Standards of Learning (SOL) tests will take place this spring in FCPS for grades 3-8. Kilmer is in the process of finalizing specific testing dates for students. For initial planning with your family, be aware that we are scheduling testing during the following weeks:

Week of May 10th: Reading tests

Week of May 17th: Science 8 tests

Week of May 24th: Math tests

More information is available about SOL assessments at each grade level. For students attending school 100% virtually, school staff will work with families to schedule an appointment for in-person SOL testing.

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology

The PTSA Diversity Committee of the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology will hold its next Diversity in STEM Talk in April! This series is especially for elementary and middle school students in grades 4-8.

Join us Monday, April 12, at 6 p.m. to hear from Julie Ann Sosa, MD, Leon Goldman MD Distinguished Professor of Surgery and Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). Dr. Sosa was born in Montreal and raised in upstate New York. She received her AB at Princeton, MA at Oxford, and MD at Johns Hopkins, where she also completed the Halsted residency in general surgery and a fellowship. She previously practiced medicine and taught at Duke University Medical School and Yale University Medical School. She is published in numerous medical journals and books. Dr. Sosa’s research interests include outcomes research, health care delivery, hyperparathyroidism, and thyroid cancer, with a focus on clinical trials. What’s on the Shelf: News from the Kilmer Library

April is School Library Month! At Kilmer, we are so grateful to celebrate school library month this year with actual students in our physical library. This is exactly how a school library should be -- an open, welcoming, dynamic, physical and virtual space that works to support students and teachers. Watch YA author and National Ambassador of Young People’s Literature, Jason Reynolds, talk about the importance of school libraries. To help us celebrate, encourage your own students to dive into all of our resources on Schoology, to sign-up to visit the library in-person, to participate in our clubs and activities, to put books on hold for pick-up, and to connect with the librarians.

Upcoming Library Dates:

  • Monday, April 12 @ 12pm: Among Us Lunch Meetup / KMS Library Schoology Collaborate Ultra
  • Monday, April 12 @ 1pm: Book Club  / KMS Library Schoology Collaborate Ultra
