Cub Run News 04-07-2021

From the Principal’s Desk

Dear Cub Run Families,

We hope that you had a wonderful and restful spring break last week. We are happy to have students back to virtual and in-person classes this week as we start the fourth quarter journey together! The headlines from this week’s FCPS messaging about “expanding in person learning” has generated questions that we want to try and help clarify for you. The impact of social distancing going from six feet to three feet will look different at every school and it is, unfortunately, not an open invitation to anyone who wants to be in school four days. Here are a couple of pieces of information that we think will be helpful to you as we plan our next steps:

We will continue using our MTSS (Multi-Tiered Systems of Support) process to identify students eligible for four days of instruction. (You can read more about MTSS here.)

This week, Mrs. Sobeski and I will be:

  • Reviewing our class lists.
  • Evaluating our furniture inventory.
  • Reviewing the square footage of our classrooms.
  • Determining space logistics. Students will be 3 feet apart in the classrooms but need to be 6 feet apart during lunch.  That requires our school to find new spaces for the students to eat safely.

During the week of April 12th, families whose students are currently receiving in-person instruction may receive an email inviting their child or children to attend school in-person 4 days per week beginning on Tuesday, April 20th. Our classrooms will continue to have virtual-only students as well. Our focus will be on identifying as many of our current in-person students as possible for 4 day per week attendance. Based on a variety of factors, we do not have space to accommodate any additional in-person requests at this time.

This school year has been filled with many challenges and changes. The one thing that has remained constant is the dedication of our outstanding teachers and staff to provide the best learning experience for our students. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through this most recent change.

Kind regards,

Natalie Lorenzi

Principal

April is Autism Awareness Month

April is World Autism Month, when the Autism Speaks organization encourages all of us to “focus on sharing stories and providing opportunities to increase understanding and acceptance of people with autism, fostering worldwide support.” Here at Cub Run, we are grateful for the differences and gifts that our students with autism bring to our learning community.

We’d like to recommend the following books that feature characters with autism:

Restarting FCPS Issued Laptops

Please be sure that your student is RESTARTING their laptop every week, at least twice a week. This is very important as it is how laptops get updates sent to them! Please be sure that you are not just holding the power button down or clicking “Shut Down”, the laptop needs to be “Restarted”. If your student is in person, they should restart while they are at school. If you student is all virtual, you can restart it at home, but it would be best if you can go to any FCPS school kiss and ride parking lot, or sit near one of the lobby entrances and restart from there. The laptop will automatically connect to the FCPS WiFi and updates will be downloaded.

Personal Student Devices

If you have chosen for your student to use his/her own personal device and not an FCPS issued one, please make sure you are aware of the following items. If your student is in person, the laptop will need to be connected to FCPS WiFi PRIOR to them entering the building. We are not able to work on your student’s personal device due to liability reasons. Please come to the school kiss and ride parking lot, or sit near one of the lobby entrances and log in to the WiFi. The link below will show you various configurations for how to connect different devices. Choose which device your student has and follow the directions there. NOTE: If the laptop is not at the most up to date operating system for the computer, the WiFi will not work.

Broken or Non-Functioning FCPS Laptops

With end of year testing coming up, it is very important that you let us know if your student’s laptop is damaged or not working properly ASAP. Students will be testing from their own computers this year and loaner laptops will be very limited. This is why it is extremely important that we know of any problems sooner so that we can get them fixed and ready for your student! If you are having issues with your student’s FCPS issued laptop or if there is any physical damage, please fill out a ticket at the link below.
