Dear Fairfax,
Happy Friday! On our last News You Choose, prior to Spring Break, I mentioned senior night for our cheer, football and dance teams...but we also celebrated golf and cross country! In our whirlwind three sports seasons in two, the pace and volume of information has been a challenge. Thank you for celebrating our Lions and remaining patient as we try to recognize as many students as we possibly can.
In the parent coffee this morning, there were lots of questions about SOL tests and graduation. I am thrilled to announce that graduation this year will be at Fairfax High School on our football field on June 1st, with the only change being that it will happen at 9AM. Fairfax will be a host site for two other high schools, but we are ecstatic that we will continue with our Fairfax graduations at Fairfax High School! The rain date is June 2nd, and I know questions are swirling about number of tickets for each graduate, etc. As soon as details are finalized (as we are a central graduation site, many of these are FCPS decisions/direction this year), we will let you know! With regards to SOL tests, our testing coordinator, Dr. Kraus Zadrozny has sent emails to the parents and guardians of our students who are scheduled to test this year. Her email is KJKrausZadro@fcps.edu.
Another topic that I brought up this morning was about discord “chat” servers. These are private servers or chat rooms that were originally created for gamers, I believe. It is easy for students on these servers to connect with others anonymously, and there seems to be limited governing or oversight on these platforms. I liken social media sites liking these to give our students free reign to walk around dark streets all night long, by themselves or with friends--here is a guide that tells you more: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/blog/parents-ultimate-guide-to-discord
I am looking forward to some field hockey tonight and football tomorrow!
All the best,
Erin
The Start of Ramadan
The evening of April the 12th, will most likely be the start of Ramadan, an Islamic holy month, and will last until May 11th. Ramadan is a time for reflection, contemplation and celebration. Ramadan is also a time for fasting and prayer. Our school will mark this month with presentations and decorations from our Muslim Student Association and there will be a prayer room made available to staff and students.
