Principals' Message

Happy Friday CES Community,

We hope that everyone had a wonderful spring break. The 4th quarter is off to a great start! It was nice to see all of our students' faces online or in-person. We are in the final stretch of the 2020-2021 school year. The end of the year will be filled with activities and SOLs, so before we know it June 12th will be here. Speaking of SOLs, more information and the schedule can be found below. Starting on Tuesday, April 11th, CES will start offering hot lunches for the students in school. Click HERE for a menu.

Dr. Brabrand's messaging about “expanding in person learning” has generated questions that we want to try to clarify. The impact of social distancing going from six feet to three feet will look different at every school, and unfortunately we will not be able to accommodate all in-person students with four days of in-person instruction. We are in the process of identifying students that are experiencing the greatest learning challenges as identified through the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) process. We wish that we could welcome back all of our students, but student safety is our number one priority and the number of students brought back will depend on this.

As always, we appreciate your collaboration, support, flexibility, and patience as we work to find a successful solution to the end of the 2020-2021 school year.

SOLs

Our 3rd-6th graders will be taking the Standards of Learning (SOL) tests this spring. Federal and state education departments have decided not to cancel this year’s assessments. SOL testing for grades 3-6 will be scheduled between April 26 and June 4, 2021. Below you will find the calendar with the dates that correspond with each grade level. All SOL tests are taken in-person at school. If your child is currently in-person, they will take the test on their in-person learning days. If your child is virtual, you will be asked to bring them to Centreville Elementary on their testing day. On the calendar below A is referencing Tuesday/Wednesday students, B is referencing Thursday/Friday students, and V is referencing all virtual students. Your child’s teacher will be contacting you with the dates and times within the next week if your student is virtual. For any SOL assessment, you have the right to refuse testing due to COVID-19. If you choose to refuse the SOL tests, please complete this online Google form: https://forms.gle/Pr7wMkpxBDRhuyte7.  Contact Rachel Forte (rmforte@fcps.edu) or Jen Killingsworth (Jkillingswor@fcps.edu)  at our school if you need help completing the form and/or if you have additional questions.

ADVANCED ACADEMIC PROGRAMS (AAP) SCREENING FOR SCHOOL-BASED (LEVEL II-III) SERVICES

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in grades K-8.  Learning experiences are designed to develop higher-level thinking through enrichment, acceleration, and extensions of the Program of Studies (POS).  Teachers, administrators, and advanced academic resource teachers (AARTs) work together to provide the following levels of school-based services in each elementary school:

  • Critical and Creative Thinking (CCT) Lessons, Grades K-6 (Level I)

All students in kindergarten through grade six receive level I services which consist of model lessons that are designed to teach critical and creative thinking skills.  The lessons are modeled in classrooms by either the AART or the classroom teacher and the thinking strategies are then used throughout the year by classroom teachers and other teachers who work with students. Student responses to these model lessons are often used as part of the identification process for AAP services.  Parents may also practice the thinking strategies during family conversations and activities.  A description of the nine critical and creative thinking strategies can be found at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics-k-6/advanced-academics/critical-and-creative-thinking

  • Differentiated Lessons in Areas of Academic Strength, Grades K-6 (Level II)

The AART collaborates with classroom teachers to provide additional challenge through lessons and resources that extend and enrich the POS.  Level II services are part of a talent development pool.  Students are rescreened annually to make decisions about the need for this level of service. Differentiated reading and math groups are examples of these services.  Services are delivered in the classroom by the teacher.

  • Part-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-6 (Level III)

Students identified by a local school screening committee for part-time advanced academic services are challenged through models and strategies designed to extend and enrich the POS in any of the four core subject areas.  Students receive direct instruction from the AART or a Local Level IV teacher at the local school using curriculum from the AAP Curriculum and Resources to Support the Differentiated Framework.  Students identified for Level III services usually continue to receive level III services through grade 6.

*Note:  At Centreville Elementary we also offer a Local Level IV Program in grades 3-6.  Students who have not already been found eligible for level IV services through the FCPS central screening process will be screened by our Local AAP Screening Committee for full-time AAP services in the four academic subjects.  While some students are found eligible to receive these services in the AAP classroom for all subjects, there may be others who participate in all subjects except advanced math.

Screening at Centreville is done schoolwide in the spring to determine services for the next school year.  Parents do not need to take any action as all children will be screened automatically. Multiple criteria are used to screen students for all levels of AAP services.  Parents or guardians whose children are found newly eligible for Level III or Local Level IV services for grades 3-6 will be notified before school starts in the fall

If you have any questions, please contact Kim House, Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, at kahouse@fcps.edu.
