WTW NEWS & EVENTS

TOMORROW, April 7 - Superintendent’s Town Hall

Join Dr. Brabrand on Wednesday, April 7, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. for a virtual Town Hall. He will share the latest information on the Governor’s Executive Order and will take your questions.

Watch on Channel 99 or the livestream on the FCPS website at https://www.fcps.edu/tv/ch99. Send your questions in advance to returntoschool@fcps.edu or call 1-800-231-6359 during the town hall.

Standards of Learning (SOL) Tests Will Be Delivered In-Person This Spring

Federal and state education departments have decided that SOL assessments will proceed as usual for reading, mathematics, and science and must be administered to students in person. More information is available about SOL assessments at each grade level.  Specifics of the testing plans/schedule and additional information will be sent in coming days.

Students who continue to learn virtually will have to come to school ahead of the SOL testing window in May to connect their laptops to the FCPS network, run the FCPS Health Check, and have their laptops updated if needed. To help facilitate this, we will have tech support available on Monday afternoons from 1:30-5:30 beginning on April 12th. No appointment is necessary, but students who are learning virtually must come by the school to check their laptop or else they will not be able to participate in SOL testing this spring.

Caregivers have the right to refuse SOL assessments if they have concerns about participation related to the pandemic, including health, social-emotional, and instructional time concerns. A remote non-SOL test option is in development, and information will be provided for families of qualifying students in the coming weeks.

Cav Fall (Condensed) Varsity Sports Updates

Varsity Field Hockey

Woodson hosted West Springfield - Zoe Hite scored the first point of the contest.  Caitlin Tran, Maddie Legum, and Elia Kim brought energy to the game that put pressure on the Spartan backline allowing Gwyneth Durosko to find the back of the goal for Woodson’s second.  Alex Walrath played hard on both sides of the ball, making runs behind the defense and tracking back to help the midfield.  Julia Oleyar and Zadie Rowe kept West Springfield’s defense busy on the wings.  At the opposite end of the field, the Cavalier defensive line of Levi Weinberger, Kyleigh Poot, and Makayla Mastal had a solid game. Cavs won 2-0.

Woodson then travelled to Fairfax - A highlight of the first quarter was Levi Weinberger closing down on a Fairfax attacker to deny the one-one-one.  The Lions took advantage of the subsequent corner to score.  Throughout the quarter, stick minder Caitlin Deer could be heard organizing her defense.  Audrey Fisher led an attack out of the midfield sending the ball wide to Katie Williams who found the stick of Caitlin Tran for the goal.  In a brave goal line stand by Woodson, the opposition earned a stroke and a second point.  Kelley Gross mounted a courageous fourth quarter defense with at least four significant saves.  Cavs were bested 2-1.

The team then traveled to Robinson - The first quarter involved end-to-end play with even possession.  In the second, Gwyneth Durosko began an attack and through Alex Walrath, Woodson earned a corner that built enough Cavalier confidence for a flurry of offense and excitement.  Elia Kim connected the defense to midfield with Duroskso on several occasions.  On the opposite side of the field, Makayla Mastal, Elizabeth Stribling, and Allie Maahs worked particularly well together.  Maahs demonstrated her athleticism in the third, but it was in the fourth when she drew the stroke call that changed the game’s direction.  Durosko stepped up, took and converted for the game winner.  Cavs won 1-0!

Woodson hosted Marshall for the last regular season game - Prior to her ACL surgery that day, Emmy Rummel rallied the Cavaliers. The hype carried over to the game, and it took less than 5 minutes for Elizabeth Stribling to spark the scoreboard off an assist from Zoe Hite. The lead-up to the goal was a whole team effort involving great passing that moved the ball into position.  Maddie Legum played strongly in defense.  The Woodson Cavaliers won this final regular season contest 1-0, with missing teammates and the graduating Seniors at the forefront of their minds. Patriot District playoffs begin this Wednesday, April 7, at Woodson with a 7PM game start.  See you there!  Go Cavs!

Varsity Golf

Last Week's Golf Match Results:

Match vs. SoCo resulted in our third win of the season!  Woodson finished with a final score of 172 - 180.  Kudos to our top seven for the SoCo match:

  • Minchan Kim - 40 (Match Medalist)
  • Raymond Kim - 52
  • Ryan Gaugler - 45
  • Leo Lee - 46
  • Tytan Matthews - 44
  • Alex Klein - 43
  • Winter Lee - 43

The team is now 3-3 on the season with one match to go!

Varsity Cheer

Regionals: It was a tough fight - Woodson Varsity competition cheer came in 3rd at Regional, just barely missing second place. West Springfield will represent the Patriot District at States in Richmond.

This was a stellar team with one Senior and 6 new Freshman, and only 30 Days to prepare. Watch out next year! :)

District semis: 2nd place with a 272.5/300

District finals: 3rd place with a 270.5/300

Regional semis: 3rdplace with a 268.5/300 (Scores tend to go down at the Regional level)

*Cav Cheer has been “Beyond amazing, especially for a team who has only been together for a month and a half!”

All District 1st team: Jillian Brennan, Elysa McMillan, Sophia Huh

All District 2nd team: Jackalyn Pena, Ava Dunn, Thalia Sevilla, Alicen Myers

All Region 1st team: Jillian Brennan

All Region 2nd team: Elysa McMillan, Sophia Huh

We  also want to shout out our SIX freshmen! They killed it!!! It is not easy to walk onto a Varsity squad and compete a month later!

Varsity Cross Country

Girls Cross Country competed, and the following finished the Bull Run Race: Poole, Jones, Silkowitz, Roux, DeCarlo, Stokes, Eib, Gilligan, Haile, and Loomis.

Boys Cross Country competed, and the following finished the Bull Run Race: Dawson, Hymans, Bhinge, Lockwood, Wolf, Cassata, Miller, Johnson, McKernan, and Lee.

Congrats to both teams on great racing! Post-Season competing and racing with Districts and Regionals are coming. Good luck, Cavs!

Varsity Volleyball

The Volleyball team is poised to make a strong run into the Patriot District playoffs starting this week. Go CAVS!
