Weekly News From South County High School

From The Principal

Family,

Well, can you believe it?  We have made it to spring break!  I will be totally honest, I never doubted that we would do it, but I did think that it might come at a cost of my sanity at some point along the way.  But here we are, and not only are we here at spring break, we are here with students in the building, and we are still improving on what we do to educate our students.  I have shared with you all before that I know that everything has not been as smooth as silk, but I will take this cotton blend as a win!  The teachers have done an awesome job of being fluid amidst all of the changes and speculation about change, and you all have been totally supportive of their efforts.  And then the work of the students, while I would have loved to have seen many, many, many more faces on screens during instruction (I get the same thing from our parents at parent coffees and town halls), I still must commend them for buying into this crazy year.

I know that you have heard in the news that the CDC has recommended a move from 6 foot social distancing to 3 feet.  Unfortunately, due to the fact that the county’s transmission rate has ticked back up to a high transmission rate (>100K in the past 7 days), we are not able to move to 3 foot social distancing at this time.  I am still hopeful that we will get to 3 feet in the near future, but as I have stated to you in the past, it requires that we all do our part to get the transmission numbers down.

In the near future, we are going to ask families to make decisions about final grade choices with respect to selecting the two courses that students may choose to insert a “P” grade in place of a grade from D – B+.  I want to ensure that for those students who will be going on to institutions where the National Clearinghouse is in play, to understand that colleges have traditionally not been favorable to recognizing the P as a legitimate grade.  Therefore, students may need to be very deliberate in making the choice about whether or not they exercise the use of the P grade.  I am planning on having one of our counselors to provide a video description of what the impacts might be in the near future.  At this time, we are working to gather that information from our post-secondary colleagues too.

Message from Jay Pearson:

While visiting schools in recent days, I could sense the energy and excitement from the students.   One student said yesterday, “The best part about being in-person is being in-person.”  I know it hasn’t been easy and you are facing challenges that we’ve never grappled with before.  On this last workday prior to spring break I want to thank you for all you’ve done to successfully transition all of our in-person students back to the building.  We’ll focus on our next steps to bring back additional students under the new CDC guidelines after powering down next week.   Sleep in, spend time with your family and loved ones, go outside, and set work aside.

On Tuesday, April 13, Superintendent Brabrand will be hosting a virtual Town Hall Meeting from 6:30-7:30 p.m. He will be sharing the latest information we have based on the Governor’s Executive Order and will take your questions. Please watch on Channel 21 or view the livestream. Send your questions in advance to returntoschool@fcps.edu or call 1-800-231-6359 during the Town Hall.

Lastly, I just want to remind you to continue to push your children to work through the end of this year.   While the county is inserting flexibility into grading and concerns around the social-emotional well-being of our students, it is still important to understand that we will have to move on from this and students will be responsible for what they are expected to know.  Our rising 10th, 11th, and 12th graders are enrolling into classes where what they learn now will be evaluated next year.  So please continue to encourage them to stay engaged and to not check out just yet.

However, this week, they should totally disengage and chill out! Their principal is!  With that, please have a wonderful Spring Break and enjoy your time with the Family. Take care and above all, stay safe!  #OneStallion

From the SCHS Health Room

Vision and Hearing screening will be held on the week of April 13-16 for all 10th graders during their P.E. class. If your child wears glasses, please be sure he/she has them at school on P.E. day. We will also be screening students who are new to the county in the following weeks. The purpose of screening is to identify students who need further evaluation because they have difficulty seeing the screening chart or hearing the screening tones. Parents will be notified by letter if screening results indicate that further testing is needed. Vision and hearing difficulties can interfere with learning. Prompt follow-up of a referral is recommended.
