Eagle View E-Newsletter: March 26, 2021

3/26/2021

Hello Eagle View Families,

As we finish the third quarter and get ready for Spring Break, I want to express my thanks for all that you have done to support Eagle View over the past year since our operations were compromised by the pandemic.  As we come into the final quarter, we are committed to finishing strong!

This means that student participation is more important than ever.  If your child is in our virtual program, please continue to make sure s/he is online on time for lessons and be especially vigilant about small groups or one-on-one times with the teacher.  We want to make the most out of these final 10 weeks of school.

We are also planning and scheduling our end of the year and summer programs.  Please continue to follow News You Choose emails to stay up to date.  There are many traditional end-of-the-year events that we cannot do (Field Day, traditional yearbooks, etc.), but there are other events that remain, including SOL testing, 6th Grade Promotion Ceremony, Kindergarten Orientation, class projects, etc.  Watch for more information on these.

As you may have heard, the CDC has revised guidance on social distancing in schools (3 ft between desks is allowable in class; 6 ft at lunch).  This is overall good news, and it allows our in-person staff to make some learning spaces better for kids. I’m pleased with how vigilant the staff and students have been with maintaining good safety procedures.  I’ve observed it myself and the outside inspection teams that visit us (all schools get unannounced visits from teams that inspect and report on our enforcement of mitigation measures) have consistently given us high ratings and good feedback.

I hope that you enjoy Spring Break with your children.  There are no asynchronous work assignments from teachers until we get back to school on Tuesday, April 6.  But we always recommend daily reading and all students have access to our online resources like Imagine Learning, & ST Math.  These resources are there if you want them.  Wishing you all a wonderful spring break!

Regards,

K. Iyer

ADVANCED ACADEMIC PROGRAMS (AAP) INFORMATION

SPRING SCREENING FOR SCHOOL-BASED (LEVEL II-III) SERVICES for the 2021-2022 School Year

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in grades K-8.  Learning experiences are designed to develop higher-level thinking through enrichment, acceleration, and extensions of the Program of Studies (POS).  Teachers, administrators, and advanced academic resource teachers (AARTs) work together to provide the following levels of school-based services in each elementary school:

  • Differentiated Lessons in Areas of Academic Strength, Grades K-6 (Level II)

The AART collaborates with classroom teachers to provide additional challenge through lessons and resources that extend and enrich the POS. Level II services are part of a talent development pool. Students are rescreened annually to make decisions about the need for this level of service.

  • Part-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-6 (Level III)

Students identified by a local school screening committee for part-time advanced academic services are challenged through models and strategies designed to extend and enrich the POS in the four core subject areas.  Students receive direct instruction from the AART at the local school using curriculum from the AAP Curriculum and Resources to Support the Differentiated Framework.  Students identified for Level III services continue to receive level III services through grade 6.

Screening for school-based services can happen at any time during the school year but is done schoolwide in spring to determine services for the next school year.  Parents or guardians may initiate the screening for school-based (level II and III) services by submitting the AAP School-Based Services (Level II-III) Referral Form (available at https://www.fcps.edu/registration/advanced-academics-identification-and-placement/elementary-school/current-fcps under “Forms”)  to the AART at Eagle View by Friday, April 30th. Multiple criteria are used to screen students for all levels of AAP services.  Parents or guardians who submit a referral will be notified by Eagle View Elementary of their student’s eligibility status in June.

If a parent or guardian wishes to appeal an ineligible decision for level II or level III services, they may submit an appeal with new data for consideration by the local school screening committee.  This new information should be submitted to the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, Nicole Sharpes.

Families will be notified of level IV eligibility by mail in early April. Please note students who are not found eligible for level IV services for the 2021-2022 academic school year will automatically be screened for school based level (II-III) services. Parents do not need to submit a Level II/III Referral Form.

If you have any questions, please contact Nicole Sharpes nmsharpes@fcps.edu.
