You can huff and you can puff, but you can't blow away the Three Piggy Opera! The Kindergarten tradition continued and the show went on. Bravo students & teachers!
Two teams representing Lees Corner Elementary achieved Highest Honors in the recent WordMasters Challenge™—a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 125,000 students annually. The fourth grade team scored an impressive 192 points out of a possible 200 in the second of three meets this year, placing seventh in the nation. In addition, the third grade team scored 160 points, finishing tenth nationwide.
Competing in the Gold Division of the WordMasters Challenge™, fourth graders Shane Malley, Kylie Nash and Peyton Welch, and sixth grader Matthew Peng each earned a perfect score of 20 on the challenge. Nationally, only 101 fourth graders and 24 sixth graders achieved this result. Other students from Lees Corner Elementary who achieved outstanding results in the meet include third grader Vivaan Makwana, fourth graders Cecilia Frank, Santiago Muente-Mizushima, Alexander Serrano, Hannah Strenglein, Lucas Sweet and Athreya Yedavalli, fifth graders Lais Borges and Hussein Osman, and sixth grader Yukta Thirumalai. The students were coached in preparation for the WordMasters Challenge™ by Lauri Hilburger, Kristen Lynch, and Nicole Pierce.
The WordMasters Challenge™ is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships. Working to solve the analogies helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically. Although most vocabulary enrichment and analogy-solving programs are designed for use by high school students, WordMasters Challenge™ materials have been specifically created for younger students in grades three through eight. They are particularly well suited for children who are motivated by the challenge of learning new words and enjoy the logical puzzles posed by analogies.
The WordMasters Challenge™ program is administered by a company based in Indianapolis, Indiana, which is dedicated to inspiring high achievement in American schools. Further information is available at the company’s website: http://www.wordmasterschallenge.com.

Spring Break is starting! Here are some tips to be aware of as you make plans to travel:
- The Virginia Department of Health urges all Virginians to avoid non-essential travel, especially if you are at higher risk of serious COVID-19 or if you will be visiting someone at higher risk of serious COVID-19. This recommendation applies to everyone, even if you have been vaccinated against COVID-19 or have fully recovered from COVID-19.
- FCPS does not currently have travel restrictions. Students are not required to quarantine or provide COVID 19 test results for either domestic or international travel. Parents may opt to keep their students at home for 14 days after they return from travel, however, it is not required.
- Per the Student Health and Safety Guidance Document, a Daily Health Screening Questionnaire will be required for all students attending in-person instruction. These daily health screening questionnaires will be completed on an honor basis and will not be required to be submitted to the school.
- Upon returning, any student, staff or visitor demonstrating symptoms of illness is asked to stay home to help “Stop the Spread” of COVID-19.
Attention students attending in-person learning Tuesday-Wednesday or Thursday-Friday: You may continue to place books on hold in Destiny Discover and Mrs. Dunbar will deliver the books to students’ classrooms during the school day! Curbside will continue in April as well on the following dates: April 12th and April 19th from 11 AM to 2 PM.
Please watch this video to access your child’s school library account to see what books your child has checked out. Overdue notices will be coming home in April. Please make every effort to return all library books. Many thanks! Questions? Please contact Mrs. Dunbar: ladunbar@fcps.edu
There will NOT be curbside pickup on Monday, March 29th or Monday, April 5th due to Spring Break and a Teacher Workday.
Teachers take attendance at 9:00 a.m. so your child should be logged in and ready for school by that time. If your child will be late or absent, please send a message to LeesCornerESAttendance@fcps.edu by 9:30 AM. Automated phone calls and emails are sent to anyone whose child’s absence is unverified after this time.
These are the attendance codes that are being used and their explanations:
Asynchronous - Teacher verifies student participation in learning via review of submitted work or reflection activity
Excused Absence - Examples: student illness; death in family; court appearance; difficulty logging in to online classes; temporary student or family hardship - See Regulation 2234
Excused Tardy - Student was not present at the start of the school day or class period when attendance was taken, but had a valid reason for being late
Prearranged Absence – Examples: college campus visits; family hardships, such as relocation; (not vacations) Must be reviewed in advance unless an emergency
Unexcused Local Absences - Student whereabouts are known or supported by parent but administration or local policy still deems the absence unexcused. Examples: student shopping with parent; student and family away for vacation with no plans to access class work; student participating in other non-school activity during school hours.
Unexcused tardy - Student was not present at the start of the school day for an unacceptable reason. Examples: overslept, running late, missed bus
Unverified - Student absent with no school contact by parent
Unexcused – Unverified absences are changed to this if a parent has not responded to automated emails and phone calls.
