Message from Dr. Smith

Hello Bruin Families,

We enjoyed having our Homecoming Spirit Week this week and look forward to our Homecoming Football game this evening. It's been a more vibrant community, since some of our students have returned to the school building for classes and various activities.

As we look ahead, the third quarter is coming to an end on Friday, March 26th, which is also an early release day for students  We encourage all of our students and parents to check StudentVue to know what assignments might be missing. We also encourage families to reach out to their teachers and counselor if they have questions.

FCPS has provided some updated information regarding travel guidance and end-of-year ceremonies. Please see the information in the FCPS Information section below.

Finally, we made a statement through social media yesterday, and our morning announcements this morning, to condemn the increased violence against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. It is important that we reiterate to all of our students, families and community members that we denounce all forms of discrimination, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, economic standing, or personal circumstance. We strive to create an culture at Lake Braddock where diversity is embraced and every student feels included, seen and heard.  If your child experiences any form of harassment, bullying, intimidation, or racism, please immediately contact an administrator or counselor who can help with next steps to keep your child safe and secure. I invite you to share with me any suggestions, comments or concerns you may have about how your child may be feeling in this moment. We are here for you.

United as Bruins,

Daniel W. Smith, Ed.D.

Important Reminders

Lake Braddock Community Meeting

Dear Families,

The Lake Braddock Pyramid is excited to announce our second pyramid-wide community meeting with all of the Lake Braddock Pyramid School Principals. This virtual meeting will be focused on building a stronger understanding of equity across the PreK – 12 learning continuum. During this conversation, you will learn more about the clearly defined and connected efforts of all eight schools within the pyramid in addressing equity-informed practices to ensure that all students feel welcome and that inclusion remains at the center of our work.

We plan to share our common approaches to achieve our goal and share specific strategies that each school has implemented to address the individual needs of our connected communities.  Please join us on March 23rd, at 6:30 – 8:00 P.M. to participate in the community discussion.   An eNotify will go out to families on Monday, March 22nd, with the link for the event.

We are looking forward to our continued partnership to keep equity at the center of our work, helping to lead each of our students to success.

Sincerely,

Lake Braddock Pyramid Principals

Spring Family Food Drive

It’s time for us to SPRING into action to support Bruin families in need! In December, the generous donations of our community allowed us to support 50 families with a holiday meal with all of the fixins, and additional groceries for the 2 week winter break.  We are counting on you to make our Spring Family Food Drive another fantastic success to support families over Spring Break! Please use the sign up genius link below to sign up for various grocery items. Donations can be placed in our labeled bins at  Door #1, Door #17, and Door #3 from Monday, March 15- Tuesday, March 23!

Community Use of Outdoor Facilities

Our Lake Braddock administration would encourage our community to work together to practice the safety measures known to stop the spread of COVID-19, including social distancing, wearing a mask, washing your hands and avoiding group gatherings with people outside of your household. We also ask that our community members refrain from using our outdoor facilities (track, fields, and courts) while our athletic teams have practices and contests. We are all working tirelessly to offer a meaningful athletic experience under unprecedented circumstances. Our success depends on our collective ability to minimize the spread of the virus within our athletic programs, which is 100% dependent on our ability to implement effective mitigation strategies during athletic activities. Lake Braddock greatly appreciates your partnership to ensure the safety of our student-athletes, coaches, and community.

High School Information

NEW: AP Exam Schedule

On Monday, Fairfax County Public Schools announced that we will offer College Board’s AP Exam Administration 2, with a mix of digital (at home) and paper-pencil (in-person) tests. Please visit the FCPS AP Testing Information webpage for the county AP Exam Schedule and county Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document. With the anticipation of more AP Exam opt-outs, we are now asking LBSS families to complete the LBSS AP Opt-out form by Wednesday, March 24, if they decide to opt-out of any AP Exams.

Below is a summary to the most common LBSS student and parent concerns regarding the new AP Exam Schedule:

  • My student’s exam is in-person paper-pencil and we do not feel comfortable taking the exam in the building.

Students with paper-pencil exams may choose to take the exam digitally at home during College Board’s Exam Administration 3 on June 9th or June 10th, depending on the exam. (Please note, World Language AP Exams do not have a digital option and must be taken on paper-pencil on the exam date.) If your student wants to switch from their in-person paper-pencil exam to digital in June, please email Megan Cashman, LBSS counselor at MTCashman@fcps.edu no later than Wednesday, March 24.

  • My student’s exam is digital and we want the paper-pencil version.

Unfortunately, those exams designated as digital (at home) cannot be changed to paper-pencil in person. Your student will either have to take the digital exam on the exam date or may choose to opt-out. If your student decides to opt-out, please complete the LBSS AP Opt-out form by Wednesday, March 24.

  • My student no longer wishes to take an AP Exam.

Please complete the LBSS AP Opt-out form by Wednesday, March 24. If you already notified Ms. Carrera by email (prior to March 9) of your decision to opt-out, you do not need to complete this form.

  • We have decided to opt-out of an exam but we have already paid for it.

If you opt-out of an exam and have already paid for the exam, please complete the FCPS AP Refund Form by May 3rd. This form requires students’ FCPS log-in to access.

PSAT 10

If your sophomore is interested in taking the PSAT 10 at Lake Braddock Secondary on Monday, April 19th, please have  your student complete this registration form using their school Google log-in: Lake Braddock HS PSAT 10 Intent to Participate form. Students must use their school @fcpsschools ID and log-in to access the form. Make sure you are logged off all personal Gmail accounts prior to accessing the form. The form may be more easily accessed from a computer than mobile device. Registrations are due by Friday, March 19th. Due to health and safety precautions, we are unable to accept late registrations or walk-up testers. For additional information, please visit the LBSS PSAT Test Page .

Class of 2021 Caps and Gowns

We are in the process of planning a meaningful graduation experience for the Class of 2021 to the greatest extent possible given the current situation with COVID-19. We are considering many options to celebrate this momentous occasion.

We are ordering our caps and gowns and we need your help and gentle encouragement. We need each senior to complete the cap and gown survey to ensure we have the appropriate cap and gown size for everyone. Please ask your graduate if they have completed the survey. If they have not, please ask them to click on the following link to give us their student id, height and weight.  Students can access this link by signing in with their fcpsschools.net account.

Domestic and International Travel Guidance

Spring break is just around the corner. Here are some tips to be aware of as families and FCPS staff make plans:

  • Virginia Department of Health (VDH) urges all Virginians to avoid non-essential travel, especially if you are at higher risk of COVID-19 or if you will be visiting someone at higher risk of serious COVID-19 complications. This recommendation applies to everyone, even if you have been vaccinated against COVID-19 or have fully recovered from COVID-19.
  • FCPS does not currently have travel restrictions.
  • Students are not required to quarantine or provide COVID-19 test results for either domestic or international travel. Parents may opt to keep their students at home for 14 days after they return from travel, however, it is not required.
  • Per the Student Health and Safety Guidance Document, a Daily Health Screening Questionnaire will be required for all students attending in-person instruction. These daily health screening questionnaires will be completed on an honor basis and will not be required to be submitted to the school.
  • Any student, staff or visitor demonstrating symptoms of illness is asked to stay home to help “Stop the Spread” of COVID-19.

For helpful tips and safety information regarding travel restrictions and testing, please see the following websites:

https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/coronavirus/coronavirus/travel-to-areas-with-widespread-ongoing-community-spread/

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/testing-international-air-travelers.html

2021 End-of-Year Ceremonies

Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to and planning to hold in-person graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2021. While our traditional venues (Eagle Bank Arena at George Mason University and DAR – Constitution Hall) will most likely not be available in June, we are actively exploring other venue options to include the use of our high school stadiums and/or other outside entertainment sites.

Governor Northam has updated guidance for in-person graduation ceremonies, indoor and outdoor social gatherings, and public health and space restrictions for certain outdoor sports and entertainment venues. We are currently working through these new guidelines to understand the health and safety requirements and laws for culminating events such as graduation: All Night Graduation parties, prom, and end- of-year celebrations for our elementary and secondary students.

We will promptly notify school staff, students, and parents as soon as we have the additional and plans.

FCPS Tech Support

If you find your student in need of tech support for their school-issued laptop, please to go FCPS Technology Support. There are a number of tips, suggestions, and links for assistance. If you are not able to solve the problem, please submit an IT request online. This request will be routed to Lake Braddock's IT team, who will get in contact with you and/or your student to solve the issue. Please do not submit multiple requests or call the school office directly.

Please keep a close eye on your email. This is how our IT department will communicate with you and your student. The email will come from FCPS and will have a subject line beginning with INC followed by a number. Please also give one to two school days for a response.
