What is Spring Fling?
Spring Fling is an annual school-wide tradition that takes place in mid-late March. The event normally takes over the entire school to enjoy a two-hour evening family event of a Teacher Treats silent auction, Class Basket raffle, Egg prize raffle, dinner, root beer floats, dancing and overall FUN!! It looked different in 2020 - and will again be a 100% virtual event for 2021.
This year, the PTA is making a one-year exception for Spring Fling: It will be coordinated by the dedicated 6th grade class co-chairs, Sandy Hodgkinson and Amanda Hood. A majority of the funds raised will benefit the 6th grade class (as permissible) for a virtual lock-out, class picnic, graduation activity and class t-shirts.

SLES Family Needs Our Help to Cover Cancer Treatment Expenses
Dolphin pod! One of our very own SLES Dolphin families needs our help. This little future Dolphin was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia in July and has been bravely battling it ever since. A short time ago, changes were made to the family’s insurance so that now her three-year treatment plan will not be covered. Mom can’t get a job right now because she’s the primary caregiver of the daughter. Not only that, this sweet girl is immune compromised so her siblings, who are SLES students now, must stay 100% virtual. We are omitting names to protect the family's privacy.
When one dolphin family needs help, we must come together to do what we can because we are stronger together! This family needs our help covering medical expenses. Please give whatever you can to help or share with your own friends and family network. Anything helps!

Month of the Military Child
April is Month of the Military Child and SLES will be participating in Purple Up Month.  Every Friday in April we encourage faculty, staff & students to wear purple as a show of support for our military students here at Stratford Landing Elementary.  Why purple? Purple symbolizes all branches of the military! It combines Army green, Marine red, and Air Force, Coast Guard & Navy Blue.
Email military@slpta.org if you have any questions.

Save the Date: SLES-MISSION BBQ Fundraiser - Delivered to SLES - Friday, April 16
To help celebrate the Month of the Military Child and Purple Up! Fridays in April, the PTA will partner with Mission BBQ on Friday, April 16 for a school-wide fundraising event.
For over a decade, MISSION BBQ has upheld their commitment to our brave men and women who serve and protect communities and country - soldiers, firefighters, police officers, first responders. https://www.mission-bbq.com/our-story
And the best part?? MISSION BBQ will deliver the orders to SLES! We will facilitate an organized pick up pre-ordered meals as we have done for school supply distribution days, and following SLES and MISSION BBQ safety protocols. We want to make this easy for everyone!
So, plan ahead - because you know you won’t feel like cooking on Friday, April 16.  And stay tuned for details and how to order your BBQ faves from the select catering menu that MISSION is creating just for SLES!  Questions? Email: fundraising@slpta.org

Coding classes beginning the week of March 22nd.  Capital Coding Academy will be holding a spring session in which will be offering online small group lessons of 4 to 8 students delivered using Zoom to teach students one of the most practical and sought-after skills, coding! Registration is now open, and classes will begin the week of March 22nd. The session will consist of 10 classes, each 50-minutes long. Classes will be held weekly with the exception of holidays. The cost for the session is $150.
For now, we will be offering two curricula. The first curriculum is geared toward elementary school students and will utilize Scratch; a software development platform that uses a graphical interface rather than text. The other curriculum, geared towards middle school students, will utilize Python; a computer language used extensively in academics and business. Each lesson will build upon the knowledge learned from the past lesson.
To view class schedules and register, please go to our website: https://www.capitalcodingacademy.com. When registering, we ask that you sign up for one of the “Novice I” classes, as this is the first progression level meant for those starting out with CCA, even if they have some prior experience. Our only requirements for new students are a computer (Mac, PC, or Chromebook), internet, and a desire to learn to code! Please feel free to contact Sam Meddin directly at samuelmeddin@gmail.com if you have any questions.
