Hughes MS Updates

Principal's Message

Parents and Guardians,

Next week we will close the third quarter.  This year has flown by like none other.  We want to commend students and staff as they have transitioned to the new nuances of concurrent instruction in many or all of their classes.  Please see some important items for next week below: Picture Day, Spirit Week, and an Early Release Day.  We look forward to some fun activities that will make school feel near normal.

Picture Day

For in-school students only we will have photographers here on March 23-26 from 8:30AM-3PM for school pictures.  Below are the guidelines and protocols that will be followed.

  • All school staff, VOS photography staff, and students are required wear facial coverings and adhere to physical distancing guidelines. Facial covering will only be removed for students’ photo and immediately put back on after photo.
  • Students/parents wishing to purchase a picture package can do so online both before and after picture day by clicking on the link https://vosphoto.com/langston/
  • Paper picture orders will not be accepted
  • Photos will be delivered directly to the home address provided
  • Instant IDs will be given to students on-site upon exiting the photography location.

Next week is College Spirit week and the Get Active challenge sponsored by AVID. Students will have the opportunity to attend a LIVE virtual tour of George Mason University from home or in their 3rd period classroom on March 23rd (8th grade) or March 25th (7th grade). We hope that many students join us and learn more about what college is like and what they have to do to achieve their college goals. There will be a padlet linked in the grade level Google Classrooms where students will post pictures where they did the Get Active challenge or dressed up for spirit week. This is how they will enter to win. We look forward to seeing everyone participate!

Thank you!

2021-2022 Course Requests for Rising 8th Grade Students

Your child’s course requests for the 2021-22 school year are available for review on the ParentVUE and StudentVue websites.  Click here to log on to ParentVUE and select the ‘Course Requests’ tab, located on the left-hand side of the screen, to view course requests.

This is not a guarantee of placement in elective courses.  Changes may be made over the summer based on course enrollment, staffing, and scheduling constraints.  If there is an error with your child’s course requests, or if you would like to request a change, please complete this Course Change Request Form by Friday, March 26th at 4:00 pm  or contact Michele Beard, Director of Student Services, at mbeard@fcps.edu

As you may have read, FCPS is planning for 5 days of in-person instruction next year. If your student was hesitant to select band, chorus, or orchestra due to the virtual or hybrid setting, but has now reconsidered, you may still add that course! We have also added music appreciation as a semester elective! Please complete the form listed above or contact Michele Beard.

When reviewing your child’s course requests, you should look for the following courses listed:

  • English
  • Civics
  • Invest Mat/Ener (Science)
  • Math (course will vary)
  • Health & PE 8
    • This is listed twice, as we schedule all students into two semester-long sections.
  • Electives

You should see either TWO year-long elective courses, ONE year-long elective course and TWO semester elective courses, or FOUR semester elective courses.

  • Placement in elective courses is based on course requests and course availability.  We make every effort to give students their top choices, but sometimes students are placed into alternative courses due to enrollment and/or staffing or student academic needs.
  • Electives slots may be filled at a later time due to a student’s academic needs. We will communicate with you if your student needs an academic support class in place of an elective.

Congratulations to this group of  34 POWERFUL students! These students are showing POWERful traits as we transition to in-person learning and concurrent instruction by receiving three or more POWER cards in two weeks. Check your school email for your virtual POWER cards and keep up the great work!
