Haycock Hello 3.19.21

st pat

Dear Haycock Families,

The past few weeks have been exciting across FCPS and at Haycock Elementary.  Our school building went from silent to joyful as our students returned to in-person instruction. As of today, we safely and successfully brought 516 of our Kindergarten through sixth grade students back in person.

Thank you to our staff members who worked tirelessly to prepare for this week, and to our students who responsibly wore their masks, stayed socially distanced, and followed their teachers' directions about staying safe. It was a pleasure to meet them in person.

It has taken a lot of hours and love to prepare for the in person return of some of our students and lots of the information I have been sharing has been about the in person return details. However, we are One Haycock. No matter how our students join us for school, in person or virtually- we see you, we are glad you are at Haycock, and you belong to us!

Congratulations to our eleven sixth grade students who will be moving on to the state level competition for National History Day.  We are so proud of you and your scholarly work!

Finally, in the light of this week's events, we stand in solidarity with our Asian brothers and sisters in denouncing violence and racism every where it exists. The work of our Haycock Equity Committee around cultural responsiveness and anti-racism is at the heart of what we do at Haycock both for our students and with our students.

With continued appreciation for your support and partnership,

Dr. Liz Beaty

Author Wendy Shang is Visiting (Virtually)!

On Friday, March 26, author Wendy Shang will be visiting Haycock. She will host three different sessions for our students:

  • Grades 4-6: 10:00-10:55
  • Grades 1-3: 11:00-11:55
  • Kindergarten: 12:45-1:15

Students in grades 1-6 will receive a personal BBCU link in their school Gmail titled “Author Visit with Wendy Shang”. If your child is learning from home on Friday, March 26, they’ll need to access this link in their email [How to Find BBCU Links in Student Gmail].

Students in kindergarten will see an assignment post to their teacher’s Google Classroom with a special Meet link that all of kindergarten will join. If you have any questions about this, please ask your child’s teacher.

PE Shoes

Hello Haycock Cougars!! We are so excited that all of our in-person students have returned to school and that we have ALL OF OUR #HayFam TOGETHER in the gymnasium doing physical education class.  Just a quick reminder: if your child is doing physical education in person, please make sure that they are wearing tennis shoes.  They must have rubber soles, tie with shoelaces or velcro and cover the whole foot for support.  We do not want any injuries that could have been prevented.  Thank you so much!

- Mrs. Hecht and Mrs. Callsen

Mrs. Cottle

Congratulations to Mrs. Jennifer Cottle, one of our Kindergarten teachers, who was honored by the Fairfax County School Board last night for achieving National Board Certification.  This is an awesome accomplishment!

Spring Break Travel Guidance

Spring break is just around the corner. Here are some tips to be aware of as families and FCPS staff make plans:

Sick Student Notification Protocol

Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD), in collaboration with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), has developed Sick Student Notification and Permission to Return to School/Child Care forms to be used when a student is:

  • Sent home due to COVID Like Illness (CLI)
  • Remains home from in-person instruction due to COVID Like Illness (CLI)
  • Reports a positive COVID-19 test
  • Is instructed to quarantine by a medical provider or the FCHD

The Permission to Return to School/Child form must be completed prior to the student’s return to in-person instruction.

    Sick Student Notification:

This form will be completed by the School Public Health Nurse (PHN), School Health Aide (SHA), or FCPS staff member and is retained by the parent/guardian.

FCPS has developed and translated information for parents/guardians on how to use this form.

Permission to Return to School/Child Care Form:

This form will be completed by the child’s healthcare provider and returned to the school.

Copies of SARA alert forms provided by the FCHD upon request by the parent/guardian, or a healthcare provider note will also be accepted. These documents should be stapled to the Return to School Form and returned to school.

The forms and translations can be located at this link under

Forms and Letters:

http://fcpsnet.fcps.edu/ssse/healthinfo/index.shtml

Additional acceptable documentation for student return to in-person following illness:

A health care practitioner note is also acceptable. The note is to be attached to the Return to School Form/Child Care and placed in the student’s school folder.

If the student is returning from quarantine or isolation and has been under the advisement of the FCHD, a copy of the SARA alert form is also acceptable.

If your student has a chronic health condition, such a allergies, that involves COVID like symptoms, please update your child's Health Form so that we know the symptom is a chronic one, not a new one. A new COVID like symptom while at school will mean that a student is sent to the Cares Room and you will be called to pick up your child within the hour and required to have a health care provider complete the Return to School/Child Care Form before your child can return to school in person.

A Brighter 2021: Ending the School Year Strong, featuring Ana Homayoun

Tuesday, April 13, 2021 at noon

We know this past year has been filled with so much change and uncertainty for all of us. As we head look to the end of the school year and the beginning of summer, what are ways we can make this time brighter for students and families?

The Safe Community Coalition (SCC) is excited to host noted author Ana Homayoun as she discusses how we set students up socially, emotionally and academically in the midst of remote and hybrid schooling. Ana will address ways to be organized during hybrid and remote learning and discuss how to support healthy socialization and a sense of curiosity and discovery as we head into summer break. Many parents are feeling a sense of underlying anxiety about learning gaps and "feeling behind," and Ana will look at how to address and reframe some of these concerns. Above all, Ana will offer practical, implementable strategies to support student, parent and caregiver well-being.

Ana is the founder of Green Ivy Educational Consulting, LLC, an internationally recognized organization that works with parents, students, educators, and employers. She works with schools, universities and corporations consulting with parents, students, educators and employers about promoting intrinsic motivation, authentic engagement, and overall wellness.

This event is FREE, but registration is required. Registrants will be able to access the video for two weeks following the live event. Register today at www.mcleanscc.org.
