th

Dear Families,

What a beautiful week! The sun was shining and the halls were full of students’ laughter and smiles. This weekend marks one year since our schools closed due to COVID. We are so proud to let you know that our students and staff are doing a marvelous job following safety procedures as they have returned for in-person learning. We have nearly 300 students in school each day on Tuesdays through Fridays.

FCPS has asked that all schools maintain two catch-up days each quarter where teachers are available live for the entire class period, however, they do not issue any new instruction. For this quarter, on Tuesday, March 16 and Wednesday, March 17, our Eagles should attend class (virtually or in-person) as expected and be prepared to work with students on completing tasks that require extra help.

Two areas have arisen that need your attention and support. First, even thoughFCPS did not charge any rental fees for this year’s laptops for students, it is still expected that students will care for the devices and pay for lost items such as chargers. We know those $90 Dell chargers are somewhere in your home, so please help your student to locate it if you have not seen it in a while. Second, we are still in need of yearbook pictures (see below details) and for those who would like to purchase the yearbooks to let us know (also, see below). This is an historic year, both due to COVID and the school name change.

As mentioned last week, families have the choice this year to opt students out of the SOL testing this year with no negative impact on students. Should they be in a high-school credit course (Algebra or Geometry), they can choose to defer the test to the fall if they would like. Please complete our form if you would like your child opted out and have not completed the form already.

Thank you for all you are doing to support our Eagles, whether they are flying back to us in-person or remaining at home. We are one community of learners!

Enjoy the weekend,

Tammy Hanna

teacher

We are looking to say thank you to the educators in our schools: Providence ES, Daniels Run ES, Lanier MS, Fairfax HS and Fairfax Academy for Communications and the Arts. If you or your child would like to say thank you to a current or former educator please go to our website and complete a short online form. Your thank you card can be for a specific good deed or as a way to tell inspirational teacher, coach or administrator how much they mean to you or your child.  School staff, please feel free to thank a colleague who has been helpful or a mentor.

All entries will be printed and delivered to the staff in our schools.

Thank you notes due March 30.

Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) Testing: 2021

All FCPS Seventh and eighth grade students will be taking the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) Tests starting in late April/early May and will run until June 2021. GIVEN THE CHALLENGES OF THE PANDEMIC, THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION (VDOE) IS ALLOWING STUDENTS TO OPT-OUT OF SOL TESTING FOR THIS YEAR.  Should you want your student to opt out of testing this year (no penalty against the student), please complete this form by March 31, 2021. This will allow us time to finalize our testing schedule so that we can release those dates.

The SOL tests that will be given this year include:

  • Reading 7
  • Reading 8
  • Science 8
  • Math 7
  • Math 8

*Algebra 1 (Verified Course Required for High School Graduation)

*Algebra 2 (Verified Course Required for High School Graduation)

*Geometry (Verified Course Required for High School Graduation)

*If your child decides to opt-out of Algebra 1, Algebra 2 or Geometry SOL tests for this spring, they WILL HAVE to take the appropriate SOL test in the Fall of 2021 either at Lanier (if your child is a rising 8th grade student) or at the high school your child will be attending (as a rising 9th grade student). If you have any questions, please contact our Dean/Testing Coordinator, Dr. Roger Baskin, at rsbaskin@fcps.edu.
