Bring Your Laptop to School

Soon, many students will be returning to Bull Run two days a week. While computers will not be used all day for in-person learning, laptops will be used at times throughout the day, as computers have always been a tool used for instruction and learning.

These in-person students will be bringing the laptops to and from school each day. Therefore it is important to begin to put in place a routine that involves charging the laptops the day before in-person instruction PLUS putting the device (and mouse if desired) into the backpack before heading to school

Bring Your Headphones to School

earbuds

When your child begins returning to school in-person and bringing their charged computer each day, please also remember headphones. As has been in place for the last few years, students will need to provide their own headphones for in-school computer use.

Dismissal

STUDENTS WILL BE DISMISSED THROUGH AN ANNOUNCEMENT BY BUS NUMBER.

Car riders will be dismissed first followed by bus riders with one bus number (ie. BX03, BX17, BX10) at a time with approximately 60-90 seconds in between to assist with distancing.

CAR RIDERS

Students will go to the cafeteria and wait on their "marker" until they are called by a staff member. We will use the gymnasium if we meet our room capacity in the cafeteria.

Positivity Project Focus: Social Intelligence

P2

People with this trait are aware of other people’s thoughts and feelings.  They can understand others and manage successful interpersonal relationships.  It involves both emotional intelligence and self-awareness.  Examples of this trait include knowing when to talk or listen, what to say or what to do in social situations.  Timing is a huge part of social intelligence.  A well-timed joke that is well-received and high interest when meeting someone new are examples of the importance of timing in social intelligence.

Our digital citizenship connection to social intelligence is: Relationships & communication:  We know the power of words and actions.  Again, timing is super important when referring to relationships and how our words and actions affect others. When we are online or face-to-face, we need to remember to be sensitive to others’ needs.  Our words and actions need to always be kind and uplifting.

Try this at home:  To help build social intelligence, practice understanding what emotions are and how to identify what emotions others are feeling. Have your child make a short video where they practice their mad face, silly face, sad face, happy face or surprised face.  Then watch the video and try to identify each emotion.  Then help your child match each emotion with non-threatening body language.  Then, have a discussion about how you can talk to someone who is experiencing each emotion.  What can you say to someone when they are sad versus someone who is surprised?  Increasing your child’s knowledge of which emotions people show with their face and body and how to talk to a person experiencing each emotion will help them increase their social intelligence and understand the timing of words and actions better.

Quote of the week: “The single most important lesson I learned in 25 years of talking every single day to people, was that there’s a common denominator in our human experience. The common denominator I found in every single interview is we want to be validated. We want to be understood.”  -OPRAH WINFREY

Updated Building Sign-In Process

To maximize efficiency, we are transitioning to a new sign-in process when visiting the school building. To enter the building, you will need to scan a QR code on your phone and fill out the form that appears.

Simply open the camera on your phone, and focus on the QR code at the front door.

If you need assistance, the front office staff will be happy to walk you through this process.  Thank you for your flexibility as we continue to adjust our safety mitigation strategies.

Two Health Forms Required for All Students

There are two health forms that all parents/guardians must fill out as we continue to plan for a Return to School. Parents/guardians must fill out the two forms for all children whether they plan to return to the school building this year or remain virtual all year.

Health Information in the Emergency Care Form provides valuable information regarding student health conditions. This information is critical in identifying students who may need healthcare support while at school or on the bus. Parents/guardians are reminded that they can provide this information online via their FCPS 24/7 (Blackboard) accounts within the weCare@school module.

To review your child’s Health Information

  • Login to FCPS 24-7 Parent View
  • Click on the weCare@school link
  • Click on plus sign beside the student’s name and choose:
    • Current Health Conditions
    • Current Medical Care Details

Chrome Sync

As part of FCPS’s ongoing effort to support student use of technology, Chrome Sync and the ability to save passwords is be available as an option. Students are not required to use Chrome Sync and save passwords, but may choose to them in order to:

  • reduce their log-in time.
  • access bookmarks and extensions across devices.

Chrome will remember and offer saved passwords when students are logging into different instructional applications. Chrome will also make bookmarks and extensions available on any device in which the student logs into Chrome and turns on Sync.

If your student would like to use Chrome Sync and save passwords, support resources are available on the FCPS website.  If your child is logging into Chrome now, they may need to log out of Chrome and log back in to see the new features.

FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback

This spring all BRES Bulls families will be contacted through email with a link to the FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form Online. This questionnaire is part of my School-Based Administrator Performance Evaluation Program and offers parents/guardians an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various topics related to our school. These topics include instructional leadership, school climate, human resources management, organizational management, communication and community relations and professionalism. Understanding that this has been an unusual year, the impacts of COVID-19 will be taken into consideration when reviewing the feedback.

The questionnaire will be collected online between March 8 and March 19. When you receive an email from FCPS Surveys, please take a few minutes to  complete the questionnaire. Your opinions matter!

From the Healthy Minds Blog: Tips for Building Resilience in Children

Many parents want their children to have a life that is free from stress, worry, and struggle. It is only natural to wish the best for your children, but in reality, life is full of unpredictable challenges.

A big part of a parent’s job is teaching children how to face those challenges, navigate through them, and ultimately overcome them. This is a skill that children need to develop as they are growing up and inevitably make the transition into adulthood and out of their safety net.

In the latest Healthy Minds Blog, learn how to help your child build resiliency

Protect Yourself and Slow the Spread of COVID-19

Your actions keep all of us healthy. We need to keep it up and continue working together to help slow the spread of COVID-19. There are simple steps you can take to protect yourself and your family. Testing, contact tracing, and staying home and away from others when sick or after contact with someone who is sick, are also critical to help “box in” COVID-19 and prevent it from spreading further in our community. Click here for more information.  Click here for COVID testing sites in Fairfax.

Click here to view the FCPS COVID dashboard for COVID-19 cases that have been self-reported to us. Data is updated weekly on Friday by 1 p.m. Any cases occurring after that time are reported for the following week.

This data should be interpreted with caution as it only reflects cases that have been shared with FCPS through self-reporting and may not be aligned to future epidemiological investigations. This data is currently being shared from a division level, as opposed to school or work site, so that it does not jeopardize sharing personally identifiable, confidential health information involving FCPS students and staff. Case reports indicate the total number of COVID-19 cases self-reported to principals, administrators, and program managers. Reports were shared with the Fairfax County Health Department to initiate contact tracing.

Effective November 2, the FCPS COVID-19 dashboard will be disaggregated and will present case data by school and case type (student, staff, visitor) and data will be updated daily.
