Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in grades K-8. Learning experiences are designed to develop higher-level thinking through enrichment, acceleration, and extensions of the Program of Studies (POS). Teachers, administrators, and advanced academic resource teachers (AARTs) work together to provide the following levels of school-based services in each elementary school:
-
Critical and Creative Thinking Lessons, Grades K-6 (Level I)
All students in kindergarten through grade six receive level I services which consist of model lessons that are designed to teach critical and creative thinking skills. The lessons are modeled in all classrooms by AARTs and the thinking strategies are then used throughout the year by classroom teachers and other teachers who work with students. Student responses to these model lessons are used as part of the identification process for AAP services. Parents may also practice the thinking strategies during family conversations and activities. A description of the nine critical and creative thinking strategies can be found at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics-k-6/advanced-academics/critical-and-creative-thinking.
-
Differentiated Lessons in Areas of Academic Strength, Grades K-6 (Level II)
The AART collaborates with classroom teachers to provide additional challenge through lessons and resources that extend and enrich the POS. Level II services are part of a talent development pool. Students are rescreened annually to make decisions about the need for this level of service.
-
Part-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-6 (Level III)
Students identified by a local school screening committee for part-time advanced academic services are challenged through models and strategies designed to extend and enrich the POS in the four core subject areas. Students receive direct instruction from the AART at the local school using curriculum from the AAP Curriculum and Resources to Support the Differentiated Framework. Students identified for Level III services continue to receive level III services through grade 6.
Screening for school-based services can happen at any time during the school year but is done schoolwide in spring to determine services for the next school year. Parents or guardians may initiate the screening for school-based (level II and III) services by submitting the AAP School-Based Services (Level II-III) Referral Form (available at https://www.fcps.edu/node/38893 Forms) to the AART at Annandale Terrace Elementary School by April 9, 2021. Multiple criteria are used to screen students for all levels of AAP services. Parents or guardians who submit a referral will be notified by Annandale Terrace Elementary School of their student’s eligibility status by May 28, 2021.
If a parent or guardian wishes to appeal an ineligible decision, they may submit an appeal with new data for consideration by the local school screening committee. This new information should be submitted to AART Anntoinette L. McEntyre almcentyre@fcps.edu.
If you have any questions, please contact Anntoinette L. McEntyre almcentyre@fcps.edu.

Masks are a simple barrier to help prevent your respiratory droplets from reaching others. Studies show that masks reduce the spray of droplets when worn over the nose and mouth. CDC continues to study the effectiveness of different types of masks and updates the recommendations as new scientific evidence becomes available. When visiting an FCPS school or building, please wear a mask or face coving.
The following cloth masks/face coverings are acceptable and supported by FCPS:
- Gaiters with 2 or more layers
- Cloth masks/face coverings with 2 or more layers
All Parent/Guardians are being asked to acknowledge and complete this one-time commitment to health screening so we may be prepared as students are phased back into in-person learning. FCPS will be communicating directly with Parent/Guardians prior to the child's anticipated start date.
The Health Commitment form can be also submitted electronically through ParentVUE (PVUE) . Please contact the school office if you would like to have a hard copy.

ATES LIBRARY BOOK checkout information and instructions |
Use the library catalog to place a hold on books you want. Log in to the catalog properly and place a hold only on books that are listed as “IN.” Here is a video that shows you how to do this. Students: be sure your parents know you have placed holds, so they can make sure they are picked up and returned according to the schedule below.
Just before the next pickup date, you and a parent should receive an email indicating which of the books that you put on hold were checked out and available to be picked up. If you want to check this for yourself, log in to the library catalog then select “checkouts” from the main menu pull-down list (select the 3 bars icon at the top left of the catalog screen.)
Books can be returned and new ones picked up at the main entrance of the school at the following days and times:
Thursday March 10 from 8am-12:30pm. Be sure to place your holds by Friday, March 5: there is NO LIMIT, so get plenty of books to enjoy!
This will take place every 2 weeks. Upcoming dates and times will be announced. Remember, holds must be placed no later than the Friday before the pickup day.
For younger students, parents are encouraged to place the holds: again, there is a tutorial video to show you how.
And there is much more you will want to explore—including many sources for ebooks, audiobooks and online read alouds--in the Library’s Reading Resources Google Site. A link to this can always be found near the top of the Library page of the ATES website and clicking the “Reading Resources” button.
Questions or need help? Contact the Librarian, Mr. Landis, at jnlandis@fcps.edu.
