Cardinal’s Message

Cardinal’s Message

Dear Cunningham Park Families and Friends,

This week our Pre-K and Kindergarteners continued to rock concurrent learning.  All students are becoming adjusted to a new style of learning and will continue to thrive as we move forward.  Next week we welcome in another group of students, with our 1st and 2nd graders beginning concurrent instruction.

If your student is coming into the school building for concurrent learning and you have not filled out the Health Screening Commitment Form, please do so prior to child’s start date. This document indicates the parental/guardian’s agreement and commitment to completing a daily health screening prior to sending the student to school every day, and also to keep ill students at home. This form is required to be returned before the start of the in person school day.  The Health Commitment form can be submitted easily through ParentVUE (PVUE), or submitted via hard copy. If you opt to submit a hard copy, please email the completed and signed Health Commitment Form to Claudia Davila, or you may drop it off at the Cunningham Park Main Office between 8:30am – 3:30pm, Monday-Friday.

As situations change, some families may find themselves hoping to adjust their child’s attendance status.  Parents wishing to change their child from 100% virtual to in-person must make their request by emailing Mrs. Le and Mr. Kemmerer no later than the Friday before their grade level phases in. Decisions are based on capacity.  Once students begin concurrent learning, whether 100% virtual or in-person, the status should remain consistent through the end of the school year for their benefit. Changes after phase-in begins are strongly discouraged.

Last Thursday, we had a great turnout for our virtual All America Reads Night.  A big thank you to our guest readers Ms. Goldfield, Ms. Pereira, Mrs. Miller, and Ms. Trivoulides who all did a fabulous job of reading stories to our guests.  An extra special shout-out to our amazing librarian, Mrs. Brinkhuis, who orchestrated the entire event.  She is amazing and we are so lucky to have her at our school!  The children listened to stories and had an opportunity to participate in making crafts at home too!  What a fun night for all!

As a reminder, Monday, March 8th is a student holiday.  We will see all of our Cardinals on Tuesday!

Sincerely,

Katie Le, Principal and Jon Kemmerer, Assistant Principal

P2 Trait: Social Intelligence

by Dr. Keri Mina, Technology Coach

People with this trait are aware of other people’s thoughts and feelings.  They can understand others and manage successful interpersonal relationships.  It involves both emotional intelligence and self-awareness.  Examples of this trait include knowing when to talk or listen, what to say or what to do in social situations.  Timing is a huge part of social intelligence.  A well-timed joke that is well-received and high interest when meeting someone new are examples of the importance of timing in social intelligence.

Our digital citizenship connection to social intelligence is: Relationships & communication:  We know the power of words and actions.  Again, timing is super important when referring to relationships and how our words and actions affect others. When we are online or face-to-face, we need to remember to be sensitive to others’ needs.  Our words and actions need to always be kind and uplifting.

Try this at home:  To help build social intelligence, practice understanding what emotions are and how to identify what emotions others are feeling. Have your child make a short video where they practice their mad face, silly face, sad face, happy face or surprised face.  Then watch the video and try to identify each emotion.  Then help your child match each emotion with non-threatening body language.  Then, have a discussion about how you can talk to someone who is experiencing each emotion.  What can you say to someone when they are sad versus someone who is surprised?  Increasing your child’s knowledge of which emotions people show with their face and body and how to talk to a person experiencing each emotion will help them increase their social intelligence and understand the timing of words and actions better.

Quote of the week: “The single most important lesson I learned in 25 years of talking every single day to people, was that there’s a common denominator in our human experience. The common denominator I found in every single interview is we want to be validated. We want to be understood.”  -OPRAH WINFREY
