Franklin MS Weekly Update - March 5

Franklin Families and Students,

We had an exciting week at Franklin MS as we supported virtual students and in-person students simultaneously for the first time.

I am extremely proud of our 8th graders as they led the way during this transition. As in-person and virtual students this week, their positive attitude, collaborative spirit, and focus on the safety and health of others allowed our school to have a great week. We can’t wait to support our 7th grade students in the same way next week!

I would also like to thank our entire staff for their perseverance, hard work, and student-centered focus during the week. As they supported our students in school and at home, we were able to celebrate our successes and learn from the bumps in the road.

As we continue to move through this transition as a school community, please know that all of our FMS students matter. Regardless of the location they are learning from, we will be focused on making the remainder of the school year a positive experience for each one of them.

Thank you for your continued support. Best wishes for a relaxing and enjoyable weekend.

Sincerely,

Dustin Wright

Principal

Transportation Information

Parents of students who have selected in-person instruction are able to view their child's bus route assignment using the SIS ParentVue account. The image below will help you find the information in ParentVue. Earlier this month, the FCPS Transportation Team sent a notice to all families about their student’s route assignments. If you have not checked your student’s route assignment, please do so as soon as possible. If there is an issue with the route assignment, families are asked to call Area 3 Transportation at (703) 249-7000. It is suggested that students plan to arrive at their bus stop five minutes early in the morning. Franklin families can also contact our Main Office at (703) 904-5100 with any additional questions.

SOL Updates

Franklin students are scheduled to take the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) starting on May 3, 2021 and will run until June 4, 2021. This includes students who are taking classes virtually as the SOL tests cannot be taken at home and will require them to come to school for their scheduled tests. The tests that are scheduled to be given this year are:

  • Reading 7
  • Reading 8
  • Science 8
  • Math 7
  • Math 8
  • Algebra 1 (Verified Course Required for Graduation)
  • Algebra 2 (Verified Course Required for Graduation)
  • Geometry (Verified Course Required for Graduation)

Given the challenges of the pandemic, the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is allowing students to opt-out of SOL testing for this year. Should you want your child to opt out of testing this year, please fill out the following form by March 31, 2021 so that scheduling the tests can be finalized. Testing schedules and dates will be released at the beginning of April.

If your child decides to opt-out of a verified course required for graduation, they will need to take the appropriate SOL test in the Fall of 2021. If you have any questions, please contact our School Testing Coordinator, Lenore Ale.
