Dear Family Fairfax,

Happy Friday--AND, we have a beautiful week ahead!  With the return of grades 9 and 12 to in person this week, we had many lessons learned, and we are ready for our sophomores and juniors to join our school community.  In this morning’s parent coffee, I was asked what would be some bits of advice I would give for those returning in person next week.  After this week, my main advice would be to make sure your in-person Lion knows to breathe deeply, we are all here to offer support.  Share with them that the first days of school, lunch, hall transitions, finding other students to talk to have always been challenging, and that we understand that this year, it might feel excruciatingly hard.   When those who are returning next week do, please ask that they hold off on judging the in-person experience during the first couple of weeks as we are all trying to just “be” together again.  It will take time--feeling a sense of belonging for all students is a priority for us, but it will take time.

I popped in to talk to several student leaders this morning.  They are excited and eager to engage in projects and plan activities for all students, and I challenged them with coming up with socially distanced activities during lunches.  Ideas were flowing, and I am hoping that we can have some activity during certain days to ease the awkwardness of sitting so far apart during lunch.  They have great ideas.

As a final thought, I have always appreciated (and envied) the close relationships that our parents have with their students.  Continuing the conversation during the return to school---coaching and guiding as you always do---might be the very best we have to offer our students right now.  And, that is OK--to give our very best to provide guidance in a time many of us could not have imagined.  Remember, we are all here to lend an ear and learn as we go.

Wishing you a safe and restful weekend,

Erin

Building a Community of Lifelong Learners

Two of our teachers, Rebecca Cruley and Erus Cribbs, were selected to participate in an externship program that George Mason University and Amazon Web Services have offered to computer science teachers this summer.  Mrs. Cruley and Mr. Cribbs were selected from a candidate pool of 120 other computer science teachers for this exciting opportunity.  They will complete a 2-week externship at Amazon, take a 3-credit hour course at GMU, and continue to collaborate with a professional learning community during the 2021-2022 school year.  We are so proud of our teachers and their commitment to lifelong learning! More info about the program is found HERE.

Seniors - Cap & Gown Information

Cap and gowns are required for graduation ceremonies.  If you have not purchased yours yet, it’s not too late but don’t wait too much longer as prices will increase.   Below are the instructions for purchasing just a cap and gown.  You may also choose to select other more expensive packages, if you would prefer.  However ONLY a cap and gown is required to participate in the graduation ceremony in June.

Step 1: Go to www.Jostens.com and select Fairfax High School

Step 2: Scroll Down and Select “Browse All Grad Cap/Gown”

Step 3: Scroll to the bottom and select “Browse All Cap & Gown Products”

Step 4: Go to Individual Products and select Cap & Gown Unit.  This will come with a FHS Class of 2021 tassel.  You do NOT need to purchase a separate tassel.

If you have financial concerns about ordering a cap and gown, please let reach out to your counselor.

Tech Update

Did you know? To get the most recent updates on your FCPS computer, including the StudentDen icon, you can pull up to the nearest FCPS building (Elementary, Middle, or High school) and restart your computer.  Once it reboots, you will want to log in, let it stay on the network for ten minutes (you can be using it during that time).

After ten minutes, you will want to Restart (not close the lid) so the updates will install.

If this doesn’t update your Student Den Icon for whatever reason, here is the direct link to the Student den.
