Dear Shrevewood Families,
We hope you had a great week! It warmed our hearts to welcome some of our kindergarten students back into the building. The students were most excited to see our classroom teachers and specialist in-person, and they also had great fun playing “air tag” during recess. We all need to remember to find the joy like our kindergartners.
Stay safe and have a wonderful weekend!
Joshua DeSmyter
Principal
Tylea Holley
Assistant Principal
Friday, March 5th is a two hour early release day for all students in FCPS. Students will be released from in-person and virtual classes at 2:15.
Important forms NEEDED as we return to in-person learning – Please complete your Emergency Care, Health Information, and Health Screening Commitment Forms.
If you have not turned in your Emergency Care, Health Information, and/or Health Screening Commitment form yet, we encourage you to use the WeCare system to update your contact information. WeCare is an emergency care information system, available to FCPS parents and guardians who have registered for their own ParentVUE account in SIS. WeCare helps manage emergency medical information by enabling parents to enter and update their children’s medical data at their convenience online. Visit this website for more information.
The Health Screening Form can be signed electronically via ParentVue (My Account-Documents). Details on what can be found in ParentVUE and how to activate a new ParentVUE account using the activation code can be found here - Student Information System - SIS Parent Account Overview.
For more information on WeCare, ParentVue, or to send in scanned forms please reach out to our registrar, Maria Giuliani.
In preparation for the upcoming return to school groups, parents are asked to review their student’s route assignments using their SIS ParentVue account. As changes are being made to the routes frequently to accommodate the large number of students returning to the buildings, this information must be checked at least one week before your student is scheduled to return to face-to-face instruction. If you have moved or are no longer interested in attending face-to-face, these changes must be made with your school registrar- Maria Giuliani- mggiuliani@fcps.edu. Otherwise, if there is a problem with your route assignment, contact your area transportation office.
Kiss and Ride Registration
Planning on picking your student(s) up at the end of the school day in Kiss and Ride? Use the link below to register for a Kiss and Ride Number. Kiss and Ride numbers will be sent home on the first day your student returns to school.
USE THIS LINK TO REGISTER FOR A KISS AND RIDE NUMBER.
When possible (unless an emergency) visitors must schedule appointments prior to visiting a school by contacting the main office. All visitors will be required to complete a health screening questionnaire prior to entering the building. All visitors are required to wear a face covering/mask (cloth or disposable) while on school property and inside FCPS facilities. Visitors who do not have face covering/mask will be provided a disposable mask upon entering a school. Visitor access should be limited to essential activities.
This year’s Read-A-Thon raised over $25,000! Kids completed 175 lines of Read-O and 72 complete cards, which means at least 40,000 minutes were read by Shrevewood Owls! We also had great attendance at all of our virtual events. The PTA is so grateful for everyone’s participation at every level to make Read-a-Thon 2021 a success! A special thanks goes to Mr. DeSmyter and Ms. Holley for all their support, all the teachers who took their own time to come read with students in the evenings, all the teachers who encouraged kids to fill out their read-o cards, all the families who reached out to get pledges from friends and family, and of course to the KIDS for READING! Thank you all for coming together as the Shrevewood Community we know and love to make this such a fun and successful 2 weeks!
If you raised at the $50, $100, or $250 level, prize distribution will occur on SATURDAY FEBRUARY 27 from 11-2! Please come to school (wearing a mask and practicing social distancing) to pick up your prize(s). (A separate email should also come to you to confirm your fundraising total.)
Brittany Rogers, instructional coach at Shrevewood ES, always strives to do her best and over deliver on her promises. Instilled in her by her parents that “Excellence is rewarded by increase,” Brittany believes the role of an educator is invaluable, and the job is too important to not give it one’s best.
Brittany has been teaching for Fairfax County Public Schools for 10 years, previously teaching first and third grades at Rose Hill ES. Her responsibilities as an instructional coach include supporting teachers in collaborative teams as they use data and high quality instructional practices to support students, providing one on one coaching for teachers in which they set small, measurable goals that have a huge impact on student achievement, and supporting the school’s School Innovation and Improvement Plan (SIIP) through creating and delivering professional learning for teachers. Brittany is also an active member of Shrevewood’s professional development team which is a collaborative team including administration and other school leaders.
“One thing I love about being an instructional coach,” Brittany says, “is the ability to serve as a thought partner alongside other teachers in the building. It brings me so much joy to collaborate with teachers on strategies that will help them reach the goals they’ve set for their students. My position allows me to be creative, thoughtful, and thorough in serving teachers and students.”
Principal Josh DeSmyter, says, “Brittany Rogers models excellence with everything she does. She is consistent with her work in CLTs [Collaborative Learning Teams], her coaching with staff members, and she demonstrates high quality instruction in both a virtual and in-person classroom. Ms. Rogers is someone we can always count on as a true professional. I am very proud of her work at Shrevewood Elementary, and I am proud to be her principal!”
What makes it all worth it? Brittany believes that every student deserves love, respect, and the opportunity to achieve at high levels. She adds, “As teachers, we are the architects of the joy and possibilities that school can bring. My “why” revolves around leaving every school that I serve better than when I came, because that’s what our students deserve.”
In the virtual world, Brittany explains that virtual learning has been an opportunity for her “to flex a new muscle.” She elaborates, “This year has felt like year one for a lot of us, and I am happy to say that I’ve been able to work with teachers in new and different ways as a result of virtual learning. Many of the main tenets of my position such as working with individual teachers and teams have remained the same, what comes out of that work might need to look different due to our setting. I look forward to seeing students and teachers back in school!”
In her free time, Brittany enjoys long walks through Target, binging a great TV show, and trying out new recipes.
Brittany adds, “I can be a little extra at times, but I mean well!”
We believe that Britany is “extra” ordinary! Thank you for your dedication to excellence, Brittany.

- Level IV Screening Files were recently submitted for Central Screening.
- Eligibility for Level IV Services will be provided to parents sometime in the month of April.
- Screening for Levels II & III will occur in May for ALL Shrevewood students. Eligibility notifications will go out in early June.
Each year schools conduct a survey to determine the number of children eligible for kindergarten enrollment.
Any parent with a child who will be five years old on or before September 30, 2021 is required to complete and return the Survey of Preschool Children form by the end of March. If you have an eligible friend of neighbor within our Shrevewood community, please pass this form or information on to them or call the school for additional forms (703-645-6600). Please email the completed forms to our registrar, Maria Giuliani.
You can also go to the Shrevewood Kindergarten and New Student Registration webpage to submit the same information. Once we receive your survey/information, we will be in touch with information on how to register your incoming Kindergartner!
Tech Help & Supports
We know that as we move through Virtual Learning, technology issues arise. If you're having trouble with your FCPS laptop, here's a few things to try:
-
Restart your computer! (We have found that this solves MANY of our problems - including those microphone, camera, and sound issues!)
- Visit this webpage to checkout some self-help guides!
- FCPS has launched a new Parent Technology Help Desk. The help desk can be reached at 833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS) and will be answered by staff members between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m., seven days a week.
- If you still cannot get your laptop working, students and/or parents can submit an IT support ticket to get help with district digital resources or your FCPS issued laptop. Find the portal here.
We appreciate everyone's patience and understanding!
